I Tried This Ankle Strengthening Device And Here's What I Learned!
A number of months ago I came across a novel ankle-strengthening device that I felt could be beneficial for my patients and those in need of an effective and efficient way to strengthen their ankles, either for injury prevention or for injury rehabilitation.
The device is known as the Achilles, and it is as effective at providing strengthening benefits to the lower leg and ankle as it is simple to use. The device works by setting up a small metal cage and then rigging up a set of resistance bands (there are different resistance levels to choose from) to a foot plate. Depending on how you choose to rig up and configure the bands, you can target different muscles and tendons of the lower leg. In that regard, it’s a device that strengthens more than just the Achilles tendon itself; it can attack any muscles and tendons that cross the ankle joint itself, including the peroneal muscles, the tibialis anterior, tibialis posterior, the flexor hallucis longus and flexor digitorum, among others.
Throughout my time using the device at home and in the clinic with my patients, I’ve learned that this device fills a unique void that exists in the world of ankle rehabilitation (and prehabilitation) due to it’s multiple-planar strengthening benefits, whereby it can attack multiple muscles and tendons in ways that most other ankle-strengthening devices can’t. Perfect for home use and clinical use, it’s a device that can bring serious benefits to the table, if the conditions are right.
It’s not the cheapest piece of ankle rehab equipment on the market, so it’s best reserved for clinics, sports teams, or individuals who have chronic/more involved ankle issues, or those who need to ensure their ankles stay as healthy as possible due to a sports career or occupation being on the line. In that regard, the device should be seen as an investment. I do believe it can yield significant benefits to those who routinely use it as part of a regimented ankle rehab or prehab program, but as with any other strengthening device, you’ll need to put in the work on a consistent basis to make this happen.
To learn more, check out my thoughts and experiences with this device in the video along with a free ankle rehab tip I share that can help improve ankle rehab (and even prevent injury) when you’re performing exercises with your ankle (either with the Achilles or any other piece of ankle equipment or ankle exercise).

Seeing you give it such high praise makes me almost dislike the company itself more. Hear me out, if this is such a great product that helps so many people rehab, prehab, and generally help the public I think they are doing a grave disservice to people by making it so prohibitively expensive. I hope that the engineers, design team, and all the other back end things are being paid well but I can't help but feel this product is priced way too high and the CEOs are being greedy and lining their pockets. Sure they fill a small niche in the market and extremely well at that. And yeah they can price it anyway they want in the free market. Additionally I agree that the light weight plastic is the best material for this job but it being plastic ought to still be a cost saver, even at the highest end of plastic. They have discontinued one of the 3 models and that really ought to be a sign that they should just produce the pro model and lower the price; adjustability should never be behind a paywall.

Yeah, those are very valid and fair points. My praise comes from the fact that it has indeed been very helpful to many of my patients in the clinic. It’s been really cool to hear many of them talk about how their chronic neck pain has been mopped up, particularly with one patient who was lined up for PRP injections but no longer needed to go through with them after a handful of weeks using it. I wish we lived in a world where cost was never a factor or barrier for folks who are in pain. Nonetheless, I too wish the price could be lower. Maybe we’ll luck out and a competitor will come into the market and create a lower price point. Cheers!

The problem with the iron neck is that you are always in a flexion position no matter where the hinge is and thus not maintaining the normal cervical curvature. In my opinion this might cause unknown issues and it also might not. But this introduces a limitation which is training the subocciptal muscles, because they are always stretched when using this device and trying to do otherwise will lead to the iron neck not being parallel to the ground and this leads to extreme discomfort and side rotation misaligned motion.

I often have my patients with knee pain perform this exercise while holding onto a stationary object (railing, placing their hands in the kitchen sink, etc.) and leaning backwards a bit; it decreases the demand on the knees and can sometimes be a nice workaround.
