    I've not finished this so I can't really comment about it, but there is a quote early on that says something like "marriage, off we went to kill it (unforgivable) or reinforce it (unforgivable)". Creating structural disadvantage for others through your "lucky to have" love is v old fashioned - let's move on. Thanks to Nelson for at least challenging the idea that we need a structure. As for imposing a structure on the book, it's the chaos of the delivery that makes it, you couldn't be more wrong.

  • @helaamraoui4916

    I think the "chaos" in it is part of the lived experience of being a woman and queer. The book is messy because life is messy..it also relates to Harry's quote "sometimes shit just stays messy"

    Bad acting you say, that's YOUR opimion. this is a VERY English story written by an english author, an so some of the more...suptle symbolsms may get lost on an American audience, of course it's the classic thing if 10 people read a book that's 10 differant visions of it you can't please everyone can you? I (speaking as a man) liked the tv series I havent seen anything like it since THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT-1975 (about transvestite sub culture during ww2 & beyond) & A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (at one point Rachel Sterling has on a white corset thing & black bowler hat plus it's an odyssey of someone's life as in CLOCKWORK here in the U.k society was VERY repressed and puritanical during the Victorian and Edwardian eras sex was an underground thing what with the "Empire" & having to set an example to the wider world. The "cheesiness/corn you speak of, is accurate because that was the culture of those times in musical theatre

    Omg, this book is a friggin nightmare! I mean if u have suicidal tendencies, Do not read this. Every portion of it makes u wanna slit ur friggin wrists 70 dam times in a got dam row! It's awful. I don't mind ALL GLOOM AND DOOM SHYT, but this brings depression to a whole new level. So prepare urself by cutting all hopes dreams nice up moment thots, or anything bordering overcoming and building up something. Let all that trivial stuff go. And prepare for basically nothing, and blo ur brain's out right now. Cuz this book will make up wanna jump outta a 10 story window, while chewing on sharp azz glass shards on the way down! It's miserable. Hahahah. No lie. It's fine if it offered some sort of balance or up n down. But it's all one note. And that note is DEPRESSION WIT A SIDE OF GIN OR WHISKEY CUZ U WILL NEED IT. IVE ALREADY SIGNED UP FOR AAA LATER. FCK

    I don’t care of the whole 3 hours of watching the movie adaptation, it is worth it every single scene. The transition of Nan’s simple life, her fame as an actress from ups and downs brought her true love from a broken one. I love this movie😍😍second to The Handmaiden which also an adaptation from Sarah Waters’ novel.

    I really enjoyed your review of the books together. I completely agree with your observation that the writing styles being different between the two books, but I would like to say that I read both books together at the same time and I did not find the writing styles to be jarring, but rather complementary. maybe this is cuz this is the third time I've read Pages for You and my first time reading the sequel, so I already had expectations of grown-up-ness in my mind for the 2nd book. I loved your critique of how you felt about Anne at the end! I didn't really think (or maybe I was in denial) that the relationship would mean much more to Flannery than Anne, but I see what you mean completely. as someone who read the first book at 19 and then read both nearly a decade later, I could relate to both moments in time.. although I've been puzzled at why Anne would start a relationship with Flannery. I certainly would never start a relationship with an undergrad as a grad student, but I know it happens. I've just come to accept this as something that has happened in the context of the book and the point is not the TA/student relationship (it's good Flannery switched sections), but the love the two have. the enduring love and slight idealization is something that is relatable and I think that's the magic of the books for me. I know I was clutching my blanket into my chest with emotion when I read in the second book that despite the years that have passed, the two women still love each other, in addition to the experiences they've had in the years that have passed, and I believe it viscerally/can relate, although it just might be me. I thought the ending was too abrupt and I hope sylvia brownrigg will write a third book. thank you again for your review!

    Thank you very much for your review of this(that) book. same amount of craving inside me of reviews like this as much as you craved for the book. I don't know if this make sense to you. well with my low education and not so much of perpective of novels this review was great and becuase I have a background in south korea It was difficult to really engage with the text,context,cuture. I am quite surprised that the book has another title which I remember(recognize) as The price of salt. It must have been really stressful for gay people to live at that time. It was really difficult to bring myself into 21century after reading this book. to add my personal view of this book. I guess there is a reason for naming a book as The price of salt, when( where) or usually there is no price for salt and If you did payed for salt It could mean that you could have done somthing that you feel guilty about and because of that gulit the author could have tried to paied for salt ( inoder to ease "guilt")

    I totally agree. The sections were too long for me as well. I read it slowly throughout the first two sections. I enjoyed seeing and getting to know both characters more deeply. Knowing more of Anne was great. However, I found it rather disappointing. Flannery and Anne both, to me, seemed two people who could grab life by the balls and prosper it in. The submissiveness in Flannery towards Charles hit me like a truck. I was really sad for it. Clearly Charles could be charming but still, I think Flannery, in her run from herself, could have ran another more independent way, even with Willa, even being introverted and confused. I found that relationship really strange. I get it, but at the same time I dont. I wish their paths had intertwined better. We did get the feeling that thry werent really meant to be. Got a feeling that Anne was open to love Flannery only when single or dumped by Jasper which really messes with my protective bean buttons. I wish the first two chaoters had been shorter, since a lot of information did not seem as important as the amount of pages they took, and the third one longer, with more dept relatively to both women. It felt rushed. Thank you for your review!

    • @Kai-pv4rj
      @Kai-pv4rj 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to add that, as I mentioned, i read the first two sections in Pages For Her really slowly and the third section as well as Pages For You in a flash. I liked seeing how such different characters interact and come to love and discover one another. I found their story to have a great potential (wasted away in the second, unfortunaly).

    I loved reading A thousand splendid Suns because I am from Pakistan which is a neighboring country Afghanistan and many of the people from Afghanistan migrated to where I live, so we used to hear the stories about people and their lives migrating from Afghanistan but there was not enough representation of them in fiction, so I was so glad when I read that book. I was also very happy to find the friendship between the two wives and how it grew stronger over time. I love Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen but my favourite Austen has to be Persuasion. I loved the plot twist in “we were liars”. It’s been awhile since I last read that book and I have forgotten bits of it but I remember being surprised at what happened. I also really enjoyed reading when breath becomes air.

    War and Peace was definitely a five star read for me. I loved every single bit of that book and as for Anna Karenina: I didn’t like it very much but I read that when I was very young and my taste in books was not mature. Rereading it will probably help me in raising my rating for Anna Karenina.

    oof. Sorry you didn't like The Immortalists. I can't articulate why very well, but I really enjoyed it. I guess I didn't see the second half twists as unrealistic because I had already set aside that expectation when the woman tells them all their death dates. At that point, I was willing to accept extra-reality (is that a word?). I don't know. Still enjoyed hearing your thoughts on it, though.
