Spearo in transit - Part 1 - Cornwall
มุมมอง 1.7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
My first trip in the van down to Cornwall was a slow start but it picked up towards the end. There was lots of life about and easy diving compared to my normal dive spots. I got to dive places I had never been before, catch species I had never caught before with new dive buddies! I was living off seafood that was caught in the most sustainable way whilst seeing lots of marine life Check out my ...

After months out the water I had nearly forgotten how to spearfish. It was a bad start to the season but it's coming back to me slowly! Spearfishing Portland UK 2021

I had a ridiculously busy 2021 and didn't manage to dive that much, unfortunately I also didn't film much of the diving I did but heres a few clips from the season. I had plans to dive with lots of people but ran out of time, this year should be different though. I live in Oxford which means a long drive to go diving and back. I've been working on a camper for spearfishing trips. Lots more divi...

Quick maybe silly question, will this unwind automatically? ie if you put the float in the water will the line winder unwind if moving a bit? logically it wouldnt, but wondering if it does,
@@rudabb69 it can unwind if there’s tension on the line and waves moving the float. You can tie the line off though so there’s a set amount of line out and won’t unravel anymore
@@ryane8881 Great. I will test it off the jetski. the idea is to stay as compact as possible and deploy in the water as you stop the jetski and its still moving forward
Good video lad!
@@JoeoutdoorsMTW thanks man 😎
Yes it helps, greetings from the Azores
@@fredericocabeco781 thanks 👍
How many meters?. Where in Scotland was this?
@@MichaelNoon I can’t remember maybe 12m deep. It was on the east coast, it’s a secret spot of mine I don’t tell anyone about
Wow, what a profile shot 👏
@@PolakwSzkocjizdzido it was a hard angle but no damage to any meat!
How big do you they need to be to keep them
@@pictlandpickers1171 different parts of the country can have different sizes/regulations. I don’t think there any area with a minimum size over 16cm across the shell. If you stick to that you should be safe
Ryan amazing mate i am just getting back into spearfishing now just wondering if i could pick your brains for some help
@@peterjohnson7148 thanks for the comment. Sure any questions let me know and I’ll see if I can help
@Ryan E Love this dolphin he wants to play did he make happy noise when u pet him
I tried not to pet him but but I could hear him making noises and playing about. Was a great encounter
How do you find the currents there? I’m headed down that way in a couple of weeks and am keen to get in.
Very safe for currents in there. Can get out easily if currents are pushing you along. Just make sure swell it’s rolling in as pebble beach can be hard to get out
Awesome thanks. Fingers crossed for some decent weather.
Great parts😊 Very exciting to follow the progress of the trip and the different species you come across. Congratulations on the UK record👌 Is it "Raja brachyura" or "blonde ray" you see there? We experienced something similar here in Norway. A bunch of rays gathered on the ground to spawn. Egg capsules too. Most likely the species of thornback ray we saw at the time. Keep up the good work🤿👌
Thanks for the comment! There’s a few more species out there that I’d like to catch and potentially new British records! I think all the rays I saw in that bay were spotted rays (Raja montagui)! Very similar looking to the blonde ray but the spots don’t go to the edge of the wings. They don’t get very large
I see. Never seen either of them here Norway. But it's nice to see so much life in the sea. Good luck🏆
@@Alex_Anders I’ve subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing your vids! The UK sea has been hammered but people might be surprised by how good the sea can be here. Lots of species and some big specimens. Used to be a lot better in the past!
Stuck at work watching your vlogging, well done ryan, a tonic!
Thanks! I’m working 7 days a week at the moment and can’t wait for next spearo trip!
Great stuff, Ryan. I mean the whole idea of the trip is marvellous. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos! Thanks
Thank you very much! Good to hear you like it. I’m heading out to fairly unexplored areas, living off seafood while exploring. It’s been a lot of fun!
thank you! very useful!
Cheers 👍
Could you share location where did you catch a bass, thanks. Very nice I love this video
Thanks! It was at Chesil cove, Portland, Dorset
@@ryane8881 I tried to search on google map the view from your video but I can’t find the exactly location, if you have 1 minute could you attach a screenshot, of location please, appreciate a lots.
@@dinubutuc6442 hi, you can find bass all over the south coast so the exact location isn’t that important. If you Google Chesil cove then you’ll be able to go there and find a bass but there’s many better spots. A good spot would be boat diving off Portland bill!
@@ryane8881 Thanks, I am planning to fishing there next week, I don’t have a bout and I want to try lure fishing. I hope to find some good spots. I wish you all best!
nice!
Thanks mate! 🙌 Hopefully I’ll be up again soon and drop by the studio!
Just check all your cupboards in the van next time you go up there, I might be stowing away 😂 Another great video fella and some interesting catches plus the Highland tunes just set it up nicely
😆 thanks Carl! I’ll be checking under the bed before I go on next trip! I try and use different music in every video but the highland banger makes video intros so easy 😂 I reckon I was very close to seeing a wolffish but there’s other rarely seen species out there. Not easy but definitely possible to find in Scotland
Just mesmerising to watch! Absolutely exceptional spearing, I’m amazed that you’re not only solo’ing deep, remote spots on your own, you’re also bringing home exceptional fish that I’ve never seen another spearo land. Just keep doing what you love mate, it’s amazing to watch 👌🏼
That’s awesome to hear, cheers mate! I did solo dive some sketchy spots and below 20m but I also dived with a few guys. I didn’t really show it in the vid, we nearly sank a boat in big swells! 😂 made some great memories and got good stories from the trips I reckon there’s still much more out there to find in Scotland! Agreed, can’t wait to get back to exploring! 👍
Great video. It seems you have really put your time in up there. Lovely conditions and a variety of catch.Cheers mate
Thanks! Yeah I’ve spent quite a bit of time looking for good spots with no success but now I’ve found some good spots it definitely helps find the fish!
Great video, any advice on what kind of areas to search for scallops? I have a few spots around the Orkney islands but struggled on the west coast of Scotland
Thanks! I’d normally look for lochs and try to find paths to remote spots people most won’t go to then cover ground looking for them
very nice! Thanks my friend.
Thank you! Cheers!
stunning!! can’t wait for May!! john
Hopefully you’ll get some good weather and should be great! 👍
Awesome stuff mate! Love your hunting style.. Is this on the west coast?
Thanks mate. Mainly east coast, some on the north and bit over on Skye and surrounding area!
@@ryane8881 Looks amazing, some of that coastline reminds me of St Abb's head a little. Very rugged looking. This Vis is excellent too! Makes me want to go back 😂
@@OceanicMatt that clip of the coastline after the intro was up on the north coast. Savage currents there and not very safe for shore diving!
Outstanding accuracy and discernment Ryan 🔱
Thank you Grant! I had some nice fish off camera but it was a great trip!
love the hole hunting with a torch, such a good approach
Thanks, yeah it’s good for cod, ling, lobsters etc on reefs and wrecks!
I live and spear in Scotland and struggle to find quary like this! 😅 Another excellent video mate, glad the Scotland trip went/is going well!
Thanks mate, yeah back at work at the moment. These videos are just highlights, got some nice stuff off camera as well but it can make it look easier than it actually is!
@@ryane8881 Are you in the UK Spearfishing Buddies FB page?
@@gmcc83 buddies was taken over by a load of idiots that use it for directing people to their shop. Lots of people got kicked off if they were associated with other shops or were experienced and able to offer good honest advice. Lot of top spearos aren’t on that group.
brilliant to watch mate
Good to hear. Thanks mate 👌🏻
You’d need some bottle to dive with that! 🤪 Jokes aside, what an incredible and humbling experience. You’re a lucky chap!
Thanks. Before I could see it was a dolphin all I could see was a dorsal fin coming towards me! I’ve swam with wild dolphins a few times and marine mammals all the time
@@ryane8881 a few weeks ago I was spearing just off the coast of Dunbar in Scotland. I was at my usual mark, which I hold decent numbers of large pollock. I was in just over 19 feet of water, reloading my gun having just shot a pollock. I looked down and there was a massive Basking Shark swimming directly underneath me. I could have kicked it with my fins! I have never felt shock/fear like it! My rational head said “it’s a basking shark”. My irrational head said “you’re about to be eaten by a massive shark”. Sadly my irrational head won the fight and I lost out on the opportunity of a lifetime, swimming back to the boat like the panicked donkey I was!
@@gmcc83 😆 I was in Dunbar probably 10 days ago. Agreed you know it’s not going to eat you but still the size and all that can get to you!
@@ryane8881 Were you Spearfishing? Dunbar is a regular for me. Maybe catch a dive with you sometime. I tend to use the boat more than shore, launching from Dunbar harbour.
@@gmcc83 yeah I was on a spearfishing trip around Scotland and heading back home. That would be great, thanks!
In a previous video were you using Cressi Gara plastic fins? If so, how do they compare to the carbon fins you are using here? Do you feel like you need to protect the carbon fins more when you are foraging around the rocks? Also, do you do any apnea training to keep yourself dive ready?
Thanks for the comment! Yea I was using cressi plastic fins when I lost//broke my previous carbons. Carbon fins are much easier on the body you can swim faster but have less strain on the legs. You can still get out there and catch dinner and have a fun time with plastic though. I am probably slightly more careful with the carbon fins but not especially precious about them. Yeah I used to do a lot of training for spearfishing and that made me a better diver. I was doing dives over 2 mins. Over winter/early spring is great time to do it. I did cardio, apnea training and flexibility work.
@@ryane8881 I have now picked up a pair of carbon fins :) What apnea training do you do?
@@SRHartley that’s great. Have a look at “apnea walks”. Simple but can really help 👍
Thanks. Very clear and helpful
That’s great, thanks! 👍
Love your videos. love your wilderness. Great guy. What torch do you use? is that the one you'd recommend?
Thanks for the comment! I’m using the Orca D550. It cost me £70 and it’s great. Loads of spearos use it. I think “start point spearfishing” sell them now
Very nice. I like the little loop threaded stopper at the end to control how much line is paid out. My line winder came with a Velcro strap for that and that gets a little annoying to use.
Thanks, yeah different way to loop it around the wonder but it works very well!
Mr bullseye 🎯 is what you shall be called
😆 thanks have bullseyed a lot of fish!
awesome. good work
Thanks 👍
Excellent shot Sir 👌🏻
Thanks 👍
Great shot! I'm wanting to get into spearfishing, I'm just curious, how long did it take you to at least get the aiming on target? Are there any tips or advice you could give? In regards to currents, do the fins help a lot to get out of a sticky situation? How would you deal with any strong currents? Especially around Portland (near where i live) 😊 any advice would be much appreciated 🙏
Thanks James! Lot of people find the aiming hard. Good relaxed diving helps a lot and experience with a speargun gets you used to how it shoots. I’ve been spearfishing 17 years now. Carbon fins are definitely better to swim against current but at likes or Portland you won’t be able to swim against it no matter how hard you swim. Trick is to not get into strong currents unless boat diving!
At 6:41 is that red mullet ?
Yeah that’s right, there was probably about 200 small ones in the area on that dive
Well done buddy. !! Great effort paid off. 👏
Thanks, many more possibilities out there for bigger ling and other species!
Nice work Ryan, congrats on the record ling, lovin the bagpipes 😁
Thanks mate! Had to be done! 😂
Ryan, mate, absolutely loved this, that viz looks Dreamy! Well done for putting the hard work in 👌
