Spiny Lobster - Catch and Release UK

- I was spearfishing at Chesil Cove when I came across a European spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas) also known as crayfish/crawfish.
It may surprise some of you that we get these exotic looking lobsters in our cold murky waters. They were once common but were largely wiped out from overfishing. This was a small one but they can grow big.
Rarely caught by spearfishers in the UK, they often live in deeper water than most spearos can dive.
It was really interesting to have a close look at one whilst it was alive and hear the sound they make. This one went back unharmed.
When I went to release the lobster I spooked a bass. I hadn't done a breathe up and the fish was off so I didn't manage to find it again!
Well done mate! rare to see at such shallow depths, they're making a massive comeback in Cornwall but at 20m+!
Cheers buddy, better buy those extra long carbon fins! I saw your video with the ghost fishing gear, great job!
@@ryane8881 Those extra long fins will defo do the job! and cheers mate! will be uploading soon again
I didn't realise Spiny Lobsters were also Native UK waters too, i knew they were common in places like florida and stuff, never knew they were also in UK as well, thanks for the informative knowledge, really hope their numbers rise back up.
Thanks 👍 The ones in Florida are a different species of spiny lobsters I think but spiny lobsters are found through many parts of the world. They have been making a massive comeback from the Channel Islands to Scotland and are a fairly regular sighting now!
Very nice to see.. Used to work with a plasterer who had previously dived for these commercially in Devon and Cornwall back in the 70"s and 80"s (probably partly responsible for there disappearance) And definitely worthy of a catch and release. Well done
Thanks Pete, there were divers in Cornwall taking 50+ a day, they thought it was a sustainable level but there were lots of nets as well. These lobsters took a hammering. They are making a come back but can't support a commercial fishery. Hopefully one day there will be loads of them! It was great to have a close up look at one and I'm glad the camera was recording so I could share it with you.
Nice one bud.
A proper grunter there haha.
Cheers mate, it was a loud bugger!
Great find mate - cracking content as always!
Cheers buddy. All luck, no skill involved! I'm just glad the gopro hadn't ran out of battery or froze because I don't think many people would believe me if I said I found one there.
I found one the other day in 14m. It was big enough to keep. I only realised their numbers were low after I drove it home.
They are making a come back from being wiped out so lots of us have decided not to take them.... Until their numbers are much higher and they are much bigger! Congrats on finding one though, they are a great find!
@@ryane8881 it was soooo tasty.
Very cool.. Also known as Squeakers, they can get very big
I didn't know they were called squeakers but I can see why! Cheers
Very nice. The diversity of marine life makes it all worth while getting wet, whether you manage to bag a fish or not. Was there much about on the day?
Finding the unexpected is always great and keeps you wanting to know what's around the corner!
I caught pollock, grey mullet and a red mullet. Saw a lobster and a few other bits. Caught a bunch of scallops and now I'm trying to work them into a video. Have you been out recently?
Nice one - yeah I've been out a few times since the weather's been more friendly, just scavenging close to the shore atm.
Great to see 👌🐟👌
Seen loads since thankfully!
I'd be releasing just the front half!! Yum yum 😋!!!
Haha that one had some growing to do!
