11:27 Norfolk and Western Narrator: Built through the rugged or West Virginia, the Norfolk and Western requires some powerful locomotives. The N&W has among the world's largest carriers of coal. In 1951, the N&W hauled almost 53 million tons of it. Home design coal burning articulateds and mallets provided the image remembered today is a 1200 series articulated 1218. 11:55 [train whistle] 11:58 Also famous were the Y6 series of mallets and the most well-known were the Y6Bs. A common site through the West Virginia mountains were the heavy coal trains usually powered by two engines on front and one tailing as a pusher at the rear. The Y6s had such refinements as cast steel loco beds with integrally cast cylinders. All these engines were equipped with rolling bearings and those manufactured as late as 1948, were also equipped with boosters.

5:40 The railroad's premier heavy tonnage hauler was the 2-8-8-2 Y6 class locomotive. This basic mallet type was originally conceived by the N&W and then adopted by the United States Railroad Administration.

It was. That was the color of paint they had in the shop at the time. Undoubtedly the same paint they used on the mill buildings and other rolling stock. As everything was on a "run to failure" track by that time, they saw no need to buy more "engine black". They were just keeping things in good enough repair to stay operational.

Union Pacific Railroad Steam Locomotives 4-8-8-4 Big Boy Locomotive 4006 8:49 [train chugging] 23:18 Kevin Michael Richardson: And 4-8-8-4 Big Boys enjoyed productive careers hauling millions of tons of freight for up to 20 years. 23:26 [train chugging] 4-6-6-4 Challenger Locomotive 3985 29:32 Kevin Michael Richardson: The 4-6-6-4 Challenger type engine number 3985 is the largest operating steam locomotive in the world. It was reccomissioned and restored in 1981. And while number 3985 is currently being rebuilt. Its toured the country as a public relations ambassador, pulling excursion specials and occasionally working freight trains. 4-8-4 Northern Locomotive 844 32:02 [train whistle] 32:07 [train chugging] 32:10 Kevin Michael Richardson: The U.P Steam Program's other Locomotive is their newly refurbished number 844. And for now, with her sister down for repairs, she's the star of the Union Pacific show. 32:27 This particular 4-8-4 Northern type bears a unique distinction. It's the only steam locomotive on the major railroad that has never been pulled out of active service. The Santa Fe Railroad owned the largest 4-8-4s, but no other individual standard gauge locomotive has been working longer than number 844.

My model railroad, the BL&G, would’ve used steam all the way until 1971, when they replaced their last steam engines, J3a Hudsons 5438 and 5450, with a pair of EMD E7 diesels. J3a 5438 managed to survive into preservation, as did 5450, and 5438 was returned to operation for special excursions in 1985. The BL&G currently only has one of their E7 diesels, former-Southern Railway 2920, in operation. The other one, former Southern Railway 2905, was retired in 1992 and put on static display. The BL&G reactivated seven of their original steam engines, including two of their original Baldwin 2-10-0s, three secondhand 4-6-2s of varying designs, Seaboard 0-6-0 #1094, and J3a #5438, for special weekend steam excursions.
