I had the entire American Steam VHS box set when I was a kid and I used to watch it religiously. Most of the audio came from more recent recordings which were then dubbed over the footage. The audio from 14:38 to 15:31 was probably recorded from Western Maryland 734 - the whistle at 14:48 sounds just like 734's Illinois Central 3-chime. In addition, the audio from 24:57 to 25:20 was most definitely recorded from Union Pacific 844 because that whistle is unmistakable.
