My model railroad, the BL&G, would’ve used steam all the way until 1971, when they replaced their last steam engines, J3a Hudsons 5438 and 5450, with a pair of EMD E7 diesels. J3a 5438 managed to survive into preservation, as did 5450, and 5438 was returned to operation for special excursions in 1985. The BL&G currently only has one of their E7 diesels, former-Southern Railway 2920, in operation. The other one, former Southern Railway 2905, was retired in 1992 and put on static display. The BL&G reactivated seven of their original steam engines, including two of their original Baldwin 2-10-0s, three secondhand 4-6-2s of varying designs, Seaboard 0-6-0 #1094, and J3a #5438, for special weekend steam excursions.

Why did all these Companies go out of business about the same time? I would think wood never goes out of style.

The problem was the political side of railroads at this time. So much regulations to try and squash the big railroads killed the small ones with the very policies that were in place to help them. On top of the general attitude towards railroads at the time

Your information on the Rockton & Rion Rwy is incorrect. R&R bought it last steam locomotive No. 31 in 1963. The railroad ran steam until 1968.
