FAMOUS Organ DONOR? | St Thomas of Canterbury Goring | George Michael | Church Online | OnlineChurch
What do George Michael and the church organ at St Thomas of Canterbury, Goring, Berks have in common? Join me from your sofa to find out.
Thanks ever so much to the organist who kindly gave me so much information about his instrument (Though, I had to edit much of it out to keep the video - sort of - concise!).
NB. We were enroute to a concert in Reading, Berkshire when we ventured to St Thomas's. I saw on the news when George Michael died, but hadn't realised that he lived next to this church (until I returned home and done some research). As a vocalist, I used to regularly practice vocals to his 1st two solo albums and had a lot of respect for his vocal talent. So I need to visit Goring again, to pay homage to his memory. I hope this will suffice in the short term. @HimInChurch

The Flintstones? What could a visit to St Michael's Church, Chagford, Devon have to do with The Flintstones? Well, during my visit a pianist, Sophia Surenovna McKett, was practicing for a concert the next day and kept playing a melody that seemed familiar to me. Today we visited the oldest functioning wooden church in the World, St Andrews in Greensted Essex, due to it appearing in Simon Jenkins 'England's Thousand Best Churches' book. Can you do me a favor, go to St Michael's Church, Musbury, Devon, England to see The Drake memorial., Sir Knight John Drake/Sir knt. Bernard Drake.?
Yes, I'm happy to do so, when I'm in that area. 🤗 I looked it up and I live some considerable distance from it, so it's not something that is likely to happen soon. Is it related to your family genealogy or something?
@@HimInChurch Yes, Sir Knight John Drake, Bernard, is my 12th 13th Great Grandfather on my Mother', Mother's Father's side of Drake famiiy. Thank you!
Interesting. I’ve made a mental note to go there when I’m in the vicinity. Have a good day 🤗
23:28 it looks like a "raised" church graveyard, a sure sign that the graveyard is very very full, churches would often import soil to maintain an adequate grave depth over time. Even when you think you're not stepping on someone there, there is almost certainly someone beneath your feet.
Oh, thanks for this information - gives me a bit more reassurance whilst walking through the graves, knowing I probably could not have avoided anyone, anyways!
👍

Agreed. I also like all the Norman bits. Possibly even earlier saxon too.
ITS A SHAME MUSLIMS WILL TAKE OVER AND TEAR ALL OF THIS DOWN
I hope not! There are some wonderful Muslim places around which enrich the world. I’m not a religious person, so can appreciate the craftsmanship all these sacred places contain. Your comment appears to be an angry one. I have struggled with mental health myself - I wish you peace.

This is a beautiful find. Even the tiling on the floor is so very tasteful. The carving is exquisite. Every time you enter one of these churches' premises, the birds let themselves be heard, as if it is by their leave you are welcome to explore their space.
Thank you, yes. It's actually close to where I live, so I shall be taking my wife there at some point! I love your phrase to do with the birds - so glad you could enjoy them too. Thanks you for your comments. Have a great day.
How do they keep wood borer beetle out of the roof? Ongoing maintenance I should think. Expensive.
I guess...unless our forebears knew what to do. I know wattle & dorb had it's own inbuilt insect repellant - probably solutions modern society has forgotten!
Hello, this video on your Church just popped up on my screen this evening. Did you know that the little statue of Our Lady with Christ child up high in the corner of your Church is very similar to the statue of Our Lady of Walsingham in Norfolk. She has a Saxon Crown. The one in Walsingham is in the Slipper Chapel there down the road from Walsingham. ❤😊. The statue on the floor is of a Crusader from early Middle Ages. He would have gone to fight 2 Crusades to save Christian Jerusalem of those times as it looked that he was crossed at the knees and the ankles. This was the sign he had been in the Crusades. The box set in the wall with a Chalice on it is not a loo but was a Tabernacle where Communion Hosts were stored after Mass for the Priest to take to the sick. Also the Baptismal font was always near the entrance door for the Catechumens at the back of the Church who were waiting to be Baptised at Easter. After Baptism they were able to join the rest of the Congregation for Holy Mass. 😊. Thank you for showing us this Church very interesting and special with its early beginnings. We were a Catholic Christian country then. 🙏🙏😇
Hello Wendy. Thank you ever so much for your fantastically detailed information - I didn’t know it and it’s really interesting. It’s great that people like yourself have this knowledge as it enhances the experience for other watchers. Thanks also for the ‘loo’ correction! 🤗 - it’s part of my (sometimes misplaced) attempts at humour! I haven’t been to Walsingham yet, but I will bear your information in mind when I do. Thanks again, for taking the time to comment. Best wishes, Chris 🤗
Thanks Chris, I will watch out for more Churches you visit. I studied Anglo-Saxon history many, many years ago when I was at College in London. We visited churches at Jarrow, Monkwearmouth and York, we had a great teacher. 😊🌸
It certainly shows! I myself have a recent Passion in exploring these places, but don't really possess much knowledge. I know there are often history leaflets in these places but I don't get an opportunity to absorb them at that moment, because I'm usually with my son and his patience is understandably tested after 2 hours filming and taking photos! The bulk of time is editing what I have filmed/ improving audio, I necessarily limit the information I include, in an attempt at conciseness. It's all a bit of a juggling act! I look forward to your helpful insights in other videos. Have a great day 🤗
You need to stop highlighting these churches especially wooden ones they might be targeted as they have been in France
Thanks for your feedback. My feeling is that the sort of people who might tune into my YT channel are most likely interested in history, and the artefacts within, rather than having an inclination to desecrate them. I seek to encourage those who have an interest or infirmity, to visit (even just virtually) and maybe donate towards their upkeep. Have a good day.
@@HimInChurch sadly we live in dark days expect the unexpected maybe not give too much directional information regards
I will, of course, bear yours (and anyone elses) feedback in mind. I know there are bad sorts out there (I've met a few of them!). However, I also know that most people have good intentions. I haven't been publishing anything that isn't already freely available online (The maps, for example, are from google). If anyone has malign intentions they will, no doubt, express them (some Church wardens have told me of breakings etc - this is before I have filmed!). My sense is that I mustn't deny those of goodwill, an opportunity to view some of these beautiful places. Bless you for your good intentions in forewarning me. Have a good day.
Ye old drainage was a purpose made hole so that lepers could receive communion in the form of holy water. The end of the church with the spire is Stuart period and the other end has got some Norman parts to it.
Great! Thank you so much for this information 🤗
NICE!!! I'm fascinated with this
Good to hear. It would help me understand what is working on my channel if you wouldn’t mind giving me an insight into what specifically fascinated you about it? Much appreciated 🤗
I heard 20 years back that the oldest wooden church was in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Unfortunately an italian building corps gained land to build on and they just ploughed it down, never asked, just did it. By the timer the council found out, too late, gone. Twas not part of the land they bought.
Both interesting and sad. Thanks for sharing this. It’s amazing how some of these buildings last as long as they do and a testament to the builders. Modern buildings seem to occasionally have problems from the outset (I read recently that a newly built estate of houses had to be pulled down before they had even been occupied! It wasn’t anything to do with planning permissions either!).
Very beautiful, but you neglected to tell us when it was first built. Visited many stave churches in Norway which are not as beautiful, but may well be older.
Hi. Thanks for your comments. I'm not an expert on churches just an enthusiast, sharing the interiors for those who may not be able to visit these places, themselves. I usually provide links for people to delve deeper, should they be inclined - one such is the link to greatenglishchurches.co.uk which has extensive information. I'd love to see some of Norway's wooden churches - they look superb! Thanks for stopping by.
Ah I wanna enter but don't wanna give up my feathers! 😂Thanks for the awesome virtual tour 🤗
😂😂😂 My pleasure, Mr Nifty Fingers! 🎹
I can't understand who would carpet such an historic church .it loses it atmosphere and sound when singing or walking on the ancient floor
I know what you mean. Maybe it was uneven and they sought to level it out?
Wow Chris, you are really working through these. I can't keep up. You are definitely relaxing into it. You really seem to enjoy looking round and sharing these churches. Thank you. Thought you might like to know that we have started installing the pipe organ at St John's with St Mary's. The Thursday sitters are really excited. It should be up and running by summer next year. I can't wait.
Hi Murtle (is it ok to address you like that?) - how's the crochet going...;0)? Funny enough, I was talking (to the organist in St Thomas, Goring) about St John's, Devizes, yesterday and am hopeful about doing the youtube video of your church soon! (Almost started it today but decided on another one, instead). Great news about the pipe organ and those gigantic pipes! I look forward to the revisit. Thanks for keeping me informed 🤗 Best wishes for now.
Claire will be ok. Nice to meet you, can't wait to see the video. See you on your return visit.
Claire, it shall be (I think you'd told me on the video but it's been a while since I looked). Yep, I'll make sure we meet up on the return visit 🤗
No mention of the Crypt beneath the Alter. When I lived in Brixworth, they were quite proud to have it. Back then, in the 60s, the Church did not look so plastic as it does now. I certainly prefer it the way it was, to the way it is now.
Hi Mervyn. I'm no expert on these churches, just film and relate what I see, in the limited time I have there. How lucky are you to have lived there. Though many churches have crypts, they are often not accessible to visitors - I certainly wasn't aware of the crypt there, or I'd have mentioned it. Sorry to hear you found the church 'plastic' - each to their own - I was very impressed with the church, myself. Cheers
Lovely church!! Cool hand animation at the end too : )
Thanks Felix. I was waving to you in Albanian 🤭😂
@@HimInChurch Yayyyyy!
Lovely church
Thank you!
Stunning church, and very interesting to here about it.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Very impressive church and nice video. My only criticism is that it would be nice to have more in the way of verbal commentary to accompany the filming. I appreciate that you might not be very knowledgeable on the subject, but even just expressing your own natural thoughts and reactions to what you're viewing (as opposed to remaining quiet) would make the video more interesting for viewers, in my opinion.
Hi Mike. Thank you for taking the time to write this. I know what you mean and your criticism is valid. I am still attempting to settle into a 'style.' Often I am with my son on these explorations and I have to limit the time I am actually onsite, as it is wearing on his patience. Also, I might encounter other people in the church and am feeling a bit bashful - at other times, I am hit with the silence and find it difficult to utter a word! The last 4 years have been difficult for me, mentally, and I have sometimes needed to immerse myself in the quietude to assist the healing of my soul. I sometimes find videoing and photographing is all I've got, on the day and the spontaneous audio I record is sometimes too poor a quality. I have sometimes added narration at home, as I can then be sure of the audio quality - it may then have more pertinent information but I sometimes feel it lacks spontaneity. All these remarks, might indicate, I have been giving this considerable thought but, as yet, have not worked out a satisfactory solution. I considered just visiting these places on my own, so I had more leisure to remedy this, but I home educate my son and (as I mention on this particular video) it's his Bin Lorry passion that often gets me to discover these places! Also, some people have commented that they like the silent passages, as it is almost as if they themselves are within the church medatively viewing the artefacts - my speaking knocks them out of this quiet state. Again, I appreciate your feedback - the next two videos are already scheduled, so I will attempt to fill some of the gaps in future ones. Thanks again 🤗
@@HimInChurch Thanks for your response - and all very valid points you make. I'll keep an eye out for your next videos. This was the first one I've watched - it appeared as a random TH-cam recommendation, presumably as I'm interested in the medieval churches of Norfolk, where I live.
Hi Mike. Nice to know TH-cam is recommending me! Some of the videos have got more narration than others - I'm always open to any feedback - so please feel welcome to come back on anything I've done well or badly - I'd love them to be a more satisfying experience for the viewer. I've gradually been adding in churches from Simon Jenkins 1000 best churches book, and recently visited Essex - my son hasn't directed me to Norfolk yet, but I hope to get there one day (or maybe even a week!). If you haven't already, you might want to subscribe so you can get notified when my videos go online. Currently it's every Saturday at noon. Best wishes 🤗

Nice little church. It can't have much of a congregation with such a steep climb up ! Thanks for posting x
Yes, it's a bit of a hike! I suppose it's illustrative of the hills (challenges) we have to climb, in life - the effort is rewarded by magnificent views. Have a great day.
Very interesting. Thank you. And the stone cross was amazing.
Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, such a fantastic cross, with amazing detail and historical significance!
Beautiful church. And the flowers scattered throughout the building is a lovely touch. If the church is named after a saint. Could you please give us some information about the saint.?
Hi Elaine. I don't know anything about the saint in this particular case and often, I only glean such information, if it's in the church literature or in online history when I seek out links to put in the description of the churches. I've googled it, just now, to no avail. If I find it out for future videos I'll attempt to include it ( but please bear in mind I've got approx 100 videos awaiting editing, so it'll be sometime yet before I can put this in!).
Thank you for showing us this peaceful church. Much appreciated.

Cool church! Nice to virtually walk through it with you :D
Thanks, Felix. Always good to hear from you 🤗
Crikey, what a view! Incredible. Thanks so much for filming so much of the climb up there and of your walk around the churchyard. A very atmospheric interior with its low, flat ceiling. I can tell the way light illuminates the interior at the time of day you visited here, it must have been a very special experience.
Yeah, it was a special day, climbing that hill ‘ with no problems’ (As Kate Bush might say) - other than panting! Glad you enjoyed it, Rob. Have a look at the Wreay. Video (which I think you missed?) - no hill, but splendid inside and nearer your end of England (nr. Carlisle).

I love the basilica floorplan. I've seen many of these churches in small towns in Italy and I'm always struck by their simple dignity. Clearly the patroness was a lady of taste.
Yes, I agree. I think it's magnificent and was so glad I stopped by to see it.
Hi Daphne. I just thought I'd give you a heads up that another Basilica type church is going online on my TH-cam channel on 29th June 2024 (noon UK time) - it's a pretty special one too, from the 7th century! You might want to put it in your diary?

Further to my earlier message I googled merrigame tombs and it came up with people who had died in Kingsbridge, Devon - I hadn’t seen/looked for any myself and do not actually live in that area, but there’s clearly resources to discover if you wish to google it yourself. Also look at ‘wikitree’ as there’s some stuff there. Hope this helps.
Quite a beautiful church outside with a polychrome effect by the contrasting building stones which I always like! The interior is quite austere in comparsion, rendered and with the relatively small hatchments for detail as the wall surfaces are quite widespread. Very interesting nevertheless and thanks for showing us inside!
I agree. It was curiosity, when driving past, that made us stop and look inside - never know what can of worms it might open up, or insights into our collective past. It’s sort of an all season secret Santa! 😎👍
Bone Philip! Quite a pet name. An interesting memorial stone indeed.
Yes, isn’t. So much to explore, see and learn……I love visiting them - just need to knuckle down to doing some editing!
@@HimInChurch Just discovered your channel. You have a new subscriber due to it. Should you ever be in these area and have the time, I would love to see videos on Holy Trinity, Gosport (Hants.), St. Margaret's, near Well (Lincolnshire), St Mary's, Leighton Bromswold (Cambridgeshire) which was restored by the poet George Herbert and Nicholas Ferrar (of Litle Gidding fame) and St. Luke's, Torquat (Devon)--a Victorian gem.
@@josephr.gainey2079 @josephr.gainey2079 That's quite a list you've got there! I'll certainly do my best to get to them, if I'm in those areas 🤗 I had someone (also) from USA contact me today about visiting a church her ancestors have a tribute in - do the churches you've mentioned have a genealogical connection to you, or is there something in particular that links them? 🤔...just curious. I'm going to have to start writing these down! 📝
