Hiking to the Pretty Hollow, Cataloochee area, Great Smoky Mountains National Park
In this video, I do a quick hike up to the Pretty Hollow Campsite (Campsite 39) in the Cataloochee area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina.
The trail starts off by the historic Beech Grove school site and initially follows a road past a horse camp/trailhead before heading up the valley along the beautiful Palmer Creek.
Along the way I pass the trail up to the old Little Cataloochee community before branching away from Palmer Creek and heading up the Pretty Hollow Gap Trail a very short distance until I reached Campsite 39. This lovely camp site is situated among a lovely grove of hemlock trees near the creek. I then headed back down the trail the way I came.
This was a lovely hike on a well maintained (if a little buggy the day I was there) trail. As a bonus, at the very end I had an elk walk through the parking lot just as I got back to my car and we saw a bear along the road later in the day.

We had friends and relaivesin the area.Wevisited HighFalls in 1947or1948. The old bridge was still intact but not used by cars, he bridge had a steel superstrructer, bur the road deck was wood. At that time, a few deck boards were missing. I was a small boy and we walked out on the bridge, but didn' feel tthat it was safe to walk to the opposite side. We always referred to the Red Mill as "Double Bridges".
