Kousei's mother did in fact get rid of the cat that he & Tsubaki found. I believe that she told him that it would be a distraction to him and keep him from practicing the piano. If you go back and look through the episodes, you'll see that there's a black cat somewhere in most of them. So yes, the cat is definitely part of the symbolism within the show. In Japan, black cats are actually good (unlike in the US). They are believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. I would imagine that having one die on you would probably be not very good. 😨

I just found your channel and this video and am glad to watch it with you! As a headphone user I dunno if you knew but your voice is only coming out of the left channel. There's a Japanese word 「ほろ苦い」that means "bittersweet", but it doesn't hold the same negative connotation as the English word does. I feel that way a lot watching this anime, like that teenage aura has something left to impress upon us, but we're doomed to make the same mistakes over, and over again. I relate a lot to Kosei, as he's probably got a touch of the 'tism too 😂

Kousei has no idea how much he has influenced others. He just remembers that he was trying to fulfill his mother's expectations (he feels like he failed). He doesn't think that he's anything special (typical Asian poor self-image!) and doesn't realize how much all these folks around him look up to him. His animated reaction to the egg salad sandwich was just showing how excited he was about how good that sandwich is to him. 😂 The series doesn't explain where his father is, but ever since his mother died, he has lived alone. I'm not sure what he eats (probably mostly convenience store food) but he values good food and that egg salad sandwich is from a vending machine, so he's especially excited that it's so good and wants to share that excitement with his "friends". 😄

That instrument that Kaori's playing at the end is called a melodica. When Kousei was saying "Elohim, Essaim... Elohim, Essaim... I implore you...", he's repeating something that Kaori said before when they played together. It's a chant that is used in other anime and manga. And it supposedly can either bring good luck or summon demons. I'm not sure how true that is, but that's what I've read in various reddit forums.

Yes.... it really ISN'T fair when someone gets sick... especially the ones you love and when there isn't anything you can do about it. 😢 I think it's completely normal to be anxious before something significant (especially when it is in front of people) and that it is actually abnormal to not be. The key is learning to not let that stop you but instead convert that anxious energy into a power to energize you.

Kosei throwing Kaori's words back at her about remembering. Love it. And yes they are referencing a book. When Kosei said he can't commit double ❌ with her and he's not going play Ravel which is a musical piece that was also in the novel.

This isnt a spoiler, but the last few lines that Kaori said, from "You came all this way..... and so on, and into the line about committing double X" its from a book that the both of them read. Its the book shown sitting on Kaoris wheelchair. Its the book Kosei was reading when Kaori waited for him on the bridge and they both dove in it. Its also one of the books that Watari brought for Kaori to choose from. She chose that book because she saw that Kosei read and she decided to say those lines from the book because she knew he would recognize them.

It's getting more intense.... and I'm afraid that it will continue to increase. Just warning you now, be sure to keep a box of tissues nearby. As with most of the K-dramas and J-dramas I've watched, they don't ever tell us exactly what is Kaori's illness. 😓 oh, and Kousei's sensei intentionally made Kousei have to teach this new girl because she is trying to distract him to not keep thinking about his own sad thoughts. Teaching allows him to focus on someone else and to think about the piano routines that he plays/practices with a new perspective. She has also figured out the identity of this girl.

I had to rewind to make sure I heard what I heard in the end! 😢

Yes, that girl is a new character. We'll get to learn more about her in upcoming episodes. Someone actually did a really good identification of Kaori's illness, but it's too early in the series to talk about it.... 😜

One of my favorite episodes 😢. This one really taught me you might not be seeing the whole story. Of course, how she treated him near the end wasn't okay, but we can at least see she did it out of fear for his future, being the only parent actively in his life. It's kind of subtly told, but Kousei's mom initially didn't want him to take up piano. Her friend talked her into it after discovering his natural talent, so that's why the friend felt guilty. This is a very powerful episode! We finally get to see Kousei resolve his issues with his mother and at the same time, we (the audience) get to see that his mother is the cruel person we thought she was. We were seeing her from Kousei's perspective and now we understand that she really did love him and was frantic about preparing him for life without her (and basically life by himself -- the anime never does explain where his father is and why Kousei lives by himself). The song that Kousei played for the gala is one that his mother would play for him when he was young, and it's title is soooo fitting -- "Love's Sorrow". 😭😭😭 The kid is another violin prodigy and he's upset with Kaori just like that one judge is upset with her. That she doesn't follow the "rules" when she plays, so he doesn't think she should be honored so much by people, but yet, he also knows that her playing is at another level and doesn't know why. However, his playing has been like how Kousei played when he was young. It's amazingly good by technical standards, but it doesn't have emotions. So in this episode, he sees this in Kousei's playing and starts to play with his heart instead of just with his head. 😀

That one girl you were trying to figure out who she is, is Tsubaki's best friend. Tsubaki "whines" to her a lot and she ends up giving Tsubaki really good advice throughout the series. That older woman (Kousei's mother's friend) is one of the top 5 pianists in Japan. She has known Kousei since he was born (there's a scene of her holding him when he was a baby). Kaori doesn't care about the "rules" of competition. Remember that one judge that was really upset with her in an earlier episode because she didn't play the piece exactly as it is written (and they judge on accuracy to the "original" writing). That kid at the end also feels that way about Kaori. He doesn't like her because he thinks she's flaunting the "rules" and that she doesn't deserve the praise that she has been receiving. The scene where the little girl gets upset when Kousei doesn't accept the candy apple is supposed to show/remind us that children can exaggerate situations and that Kousei's memories of his mother may also be exaggerations. The trauma is still real to him, but his mother may not actually have been as terrible as his memories have been playing out.

8:57 “What year was this anime?” Three months late, but I didn’t see anyone else answer this question. The anime is very recent, 2021 I believe, but the original comic it’s based on came out in 2007, so just before smartphones started taking over. I think the story itself takes place between 2007 and 2009, but I’m not sure.

Kaori is not actually calling Kousei "Charlie Brown". She's quoting from Charlie Brown. She says "You know, I'm not always going to be around to help you.", which is an actual direct quote from the Charlie Brown comic strip. She did this before with a quote from Snoopy ("It takes courage to sail in uncharted waters" -- episode 6) and she also quoted from Charlie Brown in a previous episode ("When you're depressed, it always helps to lean your head on your arm. Arms like to feel useful." -- episode 7). So she's saying the line and then saying the name of the "person" that said it. Man..... the music in this anime is so beautiful. The song that is playing while Kousei is leaving the competition (and his two competitors are watching him walk away) is one of my favorite songs: One of the OST's for this series, song title: "Again" ❤❤❤

The thing about Kousei's mom is that she is dead. What he keeps seeing and what keeps holding him back is not her, it's his own feelings of guilt.

TH-cam stopped recommending your YLIA videos for a few months, so I had to catch up! Really glad you're continuing with this awesome story. 🥰 Just to blabber about something the show doesn't really say outright, Emi and Aizawa admired different versions of Kousei. Emi admired the Kousei who approached his first competition with a free and emotional playing style, and Aizawa admired the "human metronome" who could play a score perfectly as written. As Kousei trained for competitions and became more mechanical, Emi resented that version of him for replacing the one she admired. I don't know if she actually "loves" him any more than Aizawa does.

This is a painful series to watch 🥲 But very interesting in how it explores the human psyche, and completely worth the journey. BTW.... you did pronounce "resonance" correctly, but Kousei is pronounced more like: ko (like "co" in "coke") and say ---> ko say

Yay! A new reaction! 😀 Hori is just a M (masochistic). If you remember, she has a violent tendency (she bullied Sengoku as they were growing up, she also beats up her own dad, and she does hit Miyamura). This is also part of her "mask". She appears sweet & beautiful in public, but she's hiding her domestic qualities and her aggressive nature. Although the people closest to her are aware of or learning about her aggressive nature (Miyamura, Sengoku, Toru, and Yuki). 😜 She wants Miyamura to also be more aggressive, because it's what she is accustomed to as she was growing up (it's shown later in the anime, but her mother also has an aggressive nature hidden behind a sweet smile!). My guess is that she doesn't feel like the other person is being authentic with her unless they are aggressive. If they respond to her too nicely, she probably wonders if they are being true. I say this, because my wife is somewhat like this. When we have arguments, if I don't get angry and verbally express myself (usually loudly), she doesn't feel like I really care. Since my nature is to get quiet when I'm angry, that has caused problems, so she'll push me until I finally explode. Once I explode and express myself loudly, she's satisfied. 😩 You may not have noticed this, but in the scene outside the bakery when Miyamura and Tanihara are talking. They both indicate the number of pastries that Tanihara is planning to purchase by holding up two fingers. The two fingers also resemble/signify rabbits. 😄

Holy smokes you're still active. I was kind of bummed out the last video was 2 months ago so I figured the channel got abandoned. Can't wait for the next one.
