Appalachian Trail - Spring Mountain Shelter to Sams Gap
This is part 3 of an Appalachian Trail section hike in May 2024. This video completes this section hike and takes us from the Spring Mountain Shelter to Sams Gap, where Amy from Nature's Inn Hostel and Cabins shuttled me from Sams Gap to their hostel. I stopped my hike short there at Sams Gap mile 320 due to knee pain. This covers miles 286.2 to 320 on the Appalachian Trail. At the hostel, I got my trail name "Gator".

Longs Peak Hike to Boulder Field, Keyhole Route
มุมมอง 44ปีที่แล้ว
This hike to Longs Peak Boulder Field takes place in late June 2021. The hike was about 13 miles (20 km) and about 13,000 feet (3962 m). I used the Keyhole Route trail. The trail reports described ice and snow so I knew the summit would not be possible. I chose to turn around before the final climb to The Keyhole. I carried and would recommend: 2 water bottles Water bladder and filter Rain jack...

      Thank you. I haven't tried knee braces before, but might try next time. The knee healed up in about 1 week. Now I'm working to build the strength gradually. I think I'll fully heal soon. Thanks for the great advice!

    I watched some rim2rim videos before doing my hike in October of '23, but I didn't see this one. You are very thorough , much more than me. I jumped out of the truck with shorts, a Tshirt and a light overshirt. I took 3 steps and took the overshirt off and threw it in the truck lol. I did well on the training all in Ohio, lots of running and workouts in our rec center on the weight machines. I could have used some of the stretching you recommend. At 66 for a first big hike it was quite a challenge, but also amazing! The lady at the info center the day before tried to talk me out of it, And I admit I thought twice about it, but I knew I had to go or I may never get another chance :).

    Good job! I did the r2r South Kaibab to North Kaibab on October 19th '23, at 66 years old. That was my first big challenge hike and I'm glad I did it! The last 5 miles after Manzanita was very tough, but I made it :). I actually am considering a r2r2r , we'll see. My wife dropped me off at the trail head at 4am, she went back to the hotel to sleep a few more hours, then she drove to the North rim to meet me and get a pic of me finishing :).

    How often did u do the supplemental lunges? Everyday type thing?

    • @coryoutdoors
      @coryoutdoors 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Kevin. It was usually with 3 to 4 days between. I would rotate my workouts between actual hikes, weights and lunges, and cardio. Working out about 5 days a week. Building up duration then tapering off about 10 to 12 days before the trip.

    Outstanding job completing that gnarly haul! Thanks for taking us along! I ran that route on, mid-August, with my daughter, and came back on Oct. 8th and did it solo. If you're knees are starting to feel bad, you might consider stem cell with PRP injections. I'm 59 and just had mine done in June.

      For day hikes, my favorites are Mt Leconte via the Alum Cave trail. Charlies Bunion from Newfound Gap. And Mt Cammerer from Cosby Campground. All are 9 to 11 miles each. For multi day backpacking I would suggest the Appalachian Trail which runs through the park. Have a great time!!

    Saw the sign to boil water. So filtering the water is not enough? Did you all get bothered by any mice in the shelter?

    • @coryoutdoors
      @coryoutdoors ปีที่แล้ว

      Boil water is the default old school instruction you find. But filtering has proven success. Good eye! TriCorner shelter had mice and they were a little larger also! We tented and were fine.

      I hear that! Living in Florida, I'm comfortable being in the water with gators up to 5 feet, but bigger gators have the potential to do real damage. They are not aggressive and have even backed away from me, but it's better to keep distance.
