a MEDIUM-FORMAT sized rabbit hole | Hasselblad 907x vs 500cm
Hasselblad goes Head-to-Head. The final verdict after a few years going down a Medium-Format sized rabbit hole. In this video we compare and contrast Hasselblad's medium format digital sensor (Hasselblad 907x) to Hasselblad's Film flagship camera (Hasselblad 500) shot on Porta 800-120 film stock. Color Charts, Landscape, Street, and Portrait Photography all wrapped up in one tidy comparison video. SPOILER: The answer wasn't as clear as I had hoped.

    Hey Troy, great video. I'm thinking about getting a CFV100C. I'm curious if you've tried comparing film Vs the CFV100C back on the film camera with the same lens.

      Thanks! I appreciate you checking it out! I haven't run that specific test, but it would lend to some really interesting results as the lens characteristics would be uniform throughout (all though the field of view would be slightly different still given the size of the film compared to the size of the digital sensor). My main objective here was to see if I could come to terms with parting ways with one of the independent systems :) I am curious now though, so if I run that test I'll put it up here! Thanks again!

      @@adlerz5433 Oh great question! I don't have a personal experience with the A7cii, but I found that camera to be very impressive omat launch! I understand it shares the same sensor, so I think you could apply everything from this review relating the image quality. You could also apply the aspects of the “Sony Ecosystem” as well. I can't really speak on the ergonomics/battery life/or overheating though. I've consider buying an A7cii myself, but I'm pretty deep in the Sony ecosystem at this point. I'll state something really obvious but might help others in my position. If you are already doing photography regularly, as a job, or as a student, it makes organizing your bag SO much easier than a hobbyist (like me) who doesn't know what he'll be shooting. I bought some new bodies/lenses and now have the ability to shoot: medium format film, Digital infrared, full frame and an aps-c mirrorless... and lots of lenses, lights and modifiers too. I shoot portraits, street/creative, and wildlife. There is some overlap. I have big bags, small bags, medium, and backpacks. I am done buying gear. However, I don't know how to organize it because I don't know what I'm going to do day to day. I have a full time non-photography job and family. So, being able to get out and take photos is an ad hoc adventure. Finding people that allow me to photograph them is near impossible. The weather might look great for birding, so I'll do that, or maybe walk on the beach and see if anyone wants some photos... Or go into town and see if there's anything interesting to shoot... I have no idea. I really need to define projects for myself... or find a job that gives me projects. So.. I'd say the first step in packing a bag, is devoting yourself to a project.. that way you know what you need for that project. I do OK when I know I'm going to find birds. There is really only 1 lens for that (R6 w/200-800). However, I also have an R10 with 100-400; and that works great. I can also put the 200-800 on the R10 for small birds. I also have battery driven lights so I can take them on location as well. I did professional photography in the early 90's and it's been a passion my whole life. However, life is really getting in the way at the moment. It's a painful place to be.. kind of preparing for the time you will get.... My advice for people like me, use your phone, maybe an RX100, but then stop there until you have hours per day to dedicate to it. ;)

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for sharing your insight! That makes for a really interesting perspective. Having a defined "goal" for the gear in the bag would certainly help pair down what needs to go in it!

    • @TroyMairs

      Certainly! That is the ideal lighting scheme as far as my taste goes, I find that it usually takes a lot of stands to do it right, so I'm always experimenting with how I can get "close enough" with fewer stands and how to best strike that balance :) Thanks for checking out the vid!

    I’m sure it’s been said but…use a regular c stand with a Cardellini clamp on the high leg and mount your light to that. Flop a black neg over the back of the ultra bounce to block the spill. It will just hang. That will cover the overflow, the high leg support and remove the hot spot by having the light farther from the bounce. You can bag the leg if need be too. Sand bag would just add more to your kit tho.

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs หลายเดือนก่อน

    Most camera systems have matched eachother in terms of specs and image quality, which means there are two factors that really differentiate systems, in my opinion- Features/Tools and glass. I would say that Lumix has been killing it when offering professional tools and features. Waveforms, shutter angle, anamorphic desqueeze, etc really make the camera easier to use and better in professional environments. Sony's E-mount offers an insane amount of options for glass and AF for solo/run and gun. It depends on what you are creating and it's just a matter of picking the right tool for the job. I would go for the Lumix and day. The fact that it has open gate is the biggest factor. Open gate is a must, once you've used it and it makes the camera so much more flexible. My issue with Sony is that it takes so long for them to update their cameras and add features. I'm not saying Sony makes bad cameras, but I feel like they lack key features in the video department and not having open gate really gimps the camera if you are shooting anamorphic.

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs หลายเดือนก่อน

    Sold my A7IV after six months due to ergonomics and handling. Always felt like I was fighting the camera to get the shot I wanted. Still not certain about LUMIX FF (waiting for more resolution on an updated model), but I know the systems and layout from the MFT G9 (and earlier) and its ergonomics and UI is leaps and bounds more tuned to my liking over Sony.

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Jason! You're pretty well seeing the vertical rig here! I often opt for the "Lightweight" setup and utilize the tripod mounts built into the side of the cage. Then I use the iPad for monitoring. One time I rigged it out a little bit more to include the Falcam F22 top handle on top of the vertical rig, but ultimately haven't found myself using it much more than that one time.

    How is that third party mic barrel? I’m interested but I honestly don’t want to break off Sony’s since it’s still working. It’s not sturdy though as everyone knows. Is that a lot better than the Sony’s?

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! My native Sony mic holder was still very much intact, there are two screws that hold on that original barrel that can be removed with an allen key. This new, third party holder then slots in and use those existing mounting points. So no permanent modifications are necessary! Is this mic holder better than Sony's? Aesthetically, not really. The finish is a little rough, but I find the FUNCTION of it to be much better than Sony's. The elastic bands allow it to fit a wider range of mics, and act as an isolator to minimize handling noise that might be transferred to the mic.

    What size is the locking DC port? 2.1 or 2.5 mil? if not, can you recommend locking dc to dtap?

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I believe it is a 2.5 mil. That said, it is not a locking DC Port (unless you get the enhanced model). So I have been using an Atomos NPF to DC locking adapter to power my monitor. Thanks for checking out the vid!

    Nice setup! Does the cage block access to the Mi Shoe?

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for checking out the vid! You've got options with this cage! It comes in three pieces that can all lock in together around the camera. I leave the top plate off of the cage on my rig, which leaves the MI shoe and the two screws next to it free for the XLR top handle or a Sony MI mic. If you don't want to use the MI shoe, you can install the included top plate and it will give you a Falcam F22 rail on top for a top handle!
