Got an unexpected hookup while very shallow fishing the coast. This Titanic sized freight train made me work. I was using a Shimano BFS reel with only 40yds of 10lb braid and 12lb flouro leader.

I've been working on designing a 14 foot skiff of my own and through researching different hull designs in this size I've noticed a key design flaw at low speed in this particular boat and in the Hobie Pro angler kayaks. The flaw is only noticeable when the waves are following the vessel. At low hull speeds the bow sits in the water a lot deeper. The bow on this hull has a steep entry and this allows the bow to cut through chop and clear the splash off to the sides when you are at speed but when at low speed it acts like a rudder being grabbed and pushed by the following seas. This can lead to the hull pitching and then capsizing if the speed isn't corrected quickly. On this boat , if the motor has enough torque and decent throttle control you can speed up and slow down to follow the sea but this boat isn't really meant for this kind of conditions so most people who drive this boat won't have that kind of experience. As for the Hobie pro angler kayak design, Hobie actually addressed this issue with their newer kayaks and they aren't as prone to this happening as the older 2017 - 2020 versions. It's interesting to learn about the varying design aspects of these smaller hulls because you start to see how the hull can often dictate the limitations of the vessel unless the user of the vessel has a lot of experience. I like the solo skiffs design of their hull because it offers a sleek fast hull shape with a very shallow draft and versatility in backwater areas and its lightweight materials make it easy to launch anywhere. The trade off with it is that is limited to backwater or calmer water areas.

This is a great video; thank you for posting. I've been planning on adding a motor onto my Hobie so everything you have here is perfect. One question; Noticed you're using a 60 amp hour battery. Do you have any experience on how long a full charge will run the kayak. I know it depends on speed, etc, so just an approximate idea would be great. Thanks again.

Bro... you did some really good work! You're humble about it and say things like it was no big deal. I am wrapping up my own custom fabrication of the same 65 lb haswing motor on my lifetime Yukon angler. And It took a lot of work. I've been dying to get it on the water. This video gave me the much needed insight on keeping the motor unlocked for forward motion. Having it break from an impact after all that work would be horrible so thank you for that! I hope mine can go as fast as yours! Haha great video and great work 👍 enjoy it and stay safe out there.

If anyone is seriously using this video and doesn't have experience, let me add some extremely important info: First, weight, cost, and what bodies of water you fish/distance to cover are your most important variables. The one best thing about a kayak is weight. And no I'm talking about an outback or PA. Many very stable extremely nice kayaks are under 80 pounds. If you are fishing inshore and the tide goes down, you do NOT want to drag a 200+ lb skiff around with a motor on it, its basically impossible. Dragging a 80 lb kayak over a 50 ft sandbar is a breeze. Also if you don't have a truck, a solo skiff just isn't an option. you can do so much with a 80 lb kayak for about 1,000 for a really quality product that will last 10-20 years if you take care of it, if not more. If you have a lot of money, a truck, and don't benefit from a lightweight non motor setup, buy the skiff. I find that since I'm fishing mostly rivers and small sections of inshore areas, one of which is a loop where the tide pushes me around all day with excellent fishing spots along the way, I just don't really need the skiff. It would be cool for going from spot to spot, but I imagine a kayak is better for artificial in terms of getting into skinny areas quietly and fishing artificial as you move. A kayak is way more care free too. I don't want to have to worry about running out of gas, battery, electronics, etc. on a peaceful solo fishing outing. Anyway, just my take. Really depends on many factors. In a perfect world, I'd have my light Coosa, an outback, and a solo skiff. But I aint rich.

Wild trip for sure. Thanks for sharing and glad you’re OK. Equipment can be replaced. Had a couple storms come up on me that the weather people didn’t previously advise of in my years on the water. I always try to head into waves if possible but anytime you have decent waves and kayaks/skiffs the Ol pucker factor is always in play.

Was showing my buddy this vid. He just set up his solo skiff, with his 6hp Suzuki outboard. I now have my Oldtown Autopilot 120, and run the Suzuki 2.5 hp on mine. It's my dream setup. I just had to wait two years, to find one in stock. Three of us usually fish at least a week day and. Definitely nice weekends. In the summer we meet up with our trucks, and do three night camp and fish trips, but by our boats. We have 4 islands we'll camp out on. But one thing we always do. Summer storms or no storms we always stick together. The blue water, can be dangerous alone. Even with everything I need, and carry on board. You just never know. Always some kind of adventure. 🙏 🌊 🎣

Have trolling motor mounted, using the bromount. I had the same issue with the holes not lining up very well. Looks like the Hobie mounting holes are actually "off". Not a big deal, wallowed out a couple of the holes. solid mount. I'm decided to use the whole trolling motor head as the speed controller, extending wiring and mounting the head just behind me on the aft rails (using a hobie h-rail universal clamp). I may end up going with a smaller stand alone controller later on, we will see. Last question hopefully: What size battery are you using? You happy with it? I will primarily be using the trolling motor for traveling between points A and B, maybe 5-6 miles combined. Once I get to the spots I will be using the peddle drive. Thanks again for the help!
