The Underground Map

I’m walking between every station on the London Underground
There will eventually be walks between every tube station, in both directions, within the confines of the Circle Line. Outside the Circle Line, walks are done in the "into London" direction.
I illustrate each walk with some history, a little bit of "well I never!" and with various degrees of competence with cameras.
It's all in aid of the Prostate Cancer UK charity - there's a QR code with links to their fundraisers at the end of each video.

Why I love Ickenham Marsh
Strolling the meadows of the Hillingdon Trail
Have you ever wondered about that spot of unexpected countryside between Hillingdon station and Ickenham station when you pass it on the train? That's Ickenham Marsh, preserved by the Green Belt even though it's sandwiched between urban areas.
This is a walk between those two stations on the Uxbridge branch of Metropolitan Line and Piccadilly Line via that marsh. Furthermore, it is walk 56 on the 408 I'm doing between every station on the London Underground.
Walked on 20 July 2023, the very day of the Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election after former MP Boris Johnson resigned his seat. Despite being in this UK parliament constituency for the entire perambulation, not a poster to be seen.

How wooden homes will fix London's housing malaise

London is transforming before our very eyes. Tired old industrial sites are becoming spanking new buildings. We can thank the change of a bylaw in mid 1990s Los Angeles for all this. The amble from Acton Town to Chiswick Park could be taken entirely on Bollo Lane and its changing landscape. But I couldn't help myself. Off I went to explore the hinterland. One carrot field. Two clubs, famous worldwide... It's quite a short walk between Barons Court to West Kensington stations on the District Line of the London Underground. It was announced just before I walked this walk that the BT Tower had been sold to a hotel chain. I assume this will mean greater access in future but this February 2024 stroll through Fitzrovia marks its last period as a government building. There's a walking route between the two mainline stations of Charing Cross and Waterloo - situated on opposite sides of the River Thames from each other. Here’s why I’m doing all these London Underground station-to-station walks

In this video I explain what this project is all about. Walking between every London Underground station began as a lockdown project - one of those "something to do to get out of the house" ideas. Since in late 2022 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer (and, after treatment, given the all-clear in 2023) the project took on more of a meaning. I am fundraising for the Prostate Cancer UK charity. ...

It is an unexpectedly nice spot
I grew up in Stanwell adjoining LHR in the late 50s through 60s. My school was two fields and some grass away from what was the distant end of 27L/09R. The village grew from a few thousand to 16 000 while Iws there although the village itself retained is original shape with developments to the south , in addition to LHR the Staines reservoirs bordered it to the west. Its all very well to say it should have been elsewhere but where north Londona nd South London are hilly so no airports there , further west is Windsor Great Park so nothing was going to be bult there and further than that it doesnt get flat again until where Blackbushe is close to 40 mils out and even then its not really big enough. East of London is the Thames , and then docks and marshland -a svanat might have suggested building over dockland as LHR replaced the docks in a way . Of course it wasnt LHR back then but LAP -London Air Port. Back in the day with its 5 runways and endless different types jets , turbo props and recips it was fascinating . A bit of forward thinking would have left more land available to the north , there is still quite al ot and thatw ould have allowed a third e-w parlale to be bult in the 90s but thisis the UK and forward thinking is an alien concept
"Mechanical man" lyrics are actually quite good.
Indeed. It's a gem!
The drawing of the Telegraph Tower in West Square says it was drawn in 1810 but the telegraph wasn't invented until 1837. Am I missing something?
"telegraph" mean semaphore signals until the electric version was invented
@@TheUndergroundMap I learnt something new today. Thanks for that. Great channel BTW.
They may be bland but they most definitely arent an eyesore. Its an improvement on the flats of the 50s 60s and 70s for sure.
Small, teeny windows, poorly constructed, sustainable? but not durable.
Bloomin' square boxes is all they seem to build now, no imagination or new ideas.
Another great video A possible way to help the affordable house building problem. Any new employer creating more than 20 full time jobs has to build enough homes for the new employees. These homes must be affordable on the wages they will be paid and be should be within 30 min walk.
I think employers building the needed homes might get complicated though!
Thanks! My Grandad was born in Ardmere Road back in 1901 and his side of the family lived in Brightside Road too for a while. Unfortunately many of them now reside in Brockley and Ladywell cemetery.
No hands on the pavement, what pillock..Great video..
I will always remember the cafe in the station. It’s was Frank’s Cafe when I was a kid in 80’s/90’s and the place that sold the best homemade cookies. I lived there for 45 years before moving. Still one of the nicest stations on the Met line.
wait why did i hear an s stock?

Excellent account of the history of the land that is now Heathrow Airport, quite fascinating. Thanks
I miss the days of '01 for London'
You said no one knows why 999 was created. You mean YOU don't know. If you were on a small rural exchange you had to dial 9 to reach the main exchange of the area or if you were on a private branch exchange you dialed 9 to get an outside line so it made sense to start the emergency number with 9. so 99 at the main exchange was the emergency number. Indeed if you just dialed 99 at a main group switching center you would get the emergency switchboard. So if you just keep dialling 9 you would get to the emergency services. It's as simple as that.
The first 999 service was set up in London not on a rural exchange
What a fascinating insight into the history of Heathrow. My Grandfather used to work for Fairey Aviation for many years.
Thanks!
Hello Underground map I am Zulfiqar Ali Mughal a TH-camr watching from Hyderabad City Sindh Pakistan ❤
Welcome aboard Zulfiqar!
Enjoyed your tour through an area well known to me for many years. Two comments. I heard that the reason that South Ealing is where it is, is that it was planned to be on Ascott Ave., but was put temporarily on South Ealing Road as the other location wasn’t ready. Delays continued. The community grew around the “temporary” station which is there to this day. The second point is about the walkway from Weymouth Avenue to the eastern end of the platforms at Northfields. Contrary to what you said, the basic structure is still there, even visible in the video, but trees have grown up through it as the floor was removed. Horizontal concrete supports of the walkway are still there, all the way along. The stairs down to the platforms no longer exist.
Thanks for the in-depth information!
Lovely video, thankyou and best wishes.
Many thanks!
What a surpise. People evicted from land they owned and all because the government of the day lied about its intentions. As usual dirty, filthy, corrupt politicians making money (nice big thick envelopes stuffed with cash) out of lies and cover-ups. A bit like todays business dealings, nothing has changed. I wouldn't be surprised if the same situation (envelopes stuffed with cash) was used to extend Heathrow airport in the future.
I can’t find the comment about the two horses being buried at Heath Row Farm. One was called Boxer. My great grandfather worked on the market gardens around that area and a relative has a photo of him leading a horse called Boxer. I wonder if it’s the same one?
👍👍👍
Totally fascinating and interesting an area familiar to myself was born in hillingdon hospital and lived in Hayes until the 90's. Many places their I've never seen and part of the history of Uxbridge i never knew because at that age your not too interested in local history ❤ thank you ❤
i remember listening to this as a kid with my dad and going euston road capital building to get a kenny evertt and a nicky horne car sticker
If onlly they could have kept it.
So very sad, I didn't realise it was a hamlet. Those poor people.

Very interesting. Many of us have flown in and out of this airport, but I'll never do it again without thinking of those farms and orchards and families. Thank you.
I do the same but it’s difficult to imagine!
Yes you need a good imagination to shut all that out. Same the world over I guess.
😮❤❤
"Going out of My Head" is priceless!
I wonder how feasible it would be to build a new airport on an artificial island near the mouth of the Thames. If an express train was built, it wouldn't take any longer to get there from central London. Heathrow could then revert to farmland.
As a teenager obsessed with transportation, I spent some time designing an airport midway between the Dutch and UK coasts with high speed trains connecting each way from the airport to London and Amsterdam. Pre channel tunnel you could also travel to either capital via the airport by bullet train. You could leave the airport via either customs like you can in Geneva for France and Switzerland and the airport even had its own three letter code - NSI for North Sea International (and NZI for Dutch bound luggage). I think I overthought the idea
I've lived in/very near 9 of those places and can vouch for them. Didn't realise I was so lucky!
Amazing!
Donna!
Ooh so many places I know! 😊
Yay! Woolwich arsenal and the Thames path are in there! 🎉
That was tough to get through. 😑

Glad it was helpful!
I went to some psychedelic rock events at Peoples Hall, just lying around on the floor. Ah the good old days. Good video, it deserves more views. But I have to say, I wouldn't call the Pig and Whistle a classic London boozer, as it's probably the ugliest pub in all of Notting Hill.
Probably I should have clarified the Pig and Whistle opinion. Few pubs these days are full of customers holding one conversation which everyone is part of. The P&W tends to having been there a few times. But indeed ugly outside
No other country loves to desecrate it's heritage like us.
Now its just a smelly miserable place
When driving my train into Windsor & Eton Central station, I heard some American tourists, seeing the planes coming over the Windsor Castle, ask ‘why did they build the castle so near to the airport?’ Thanks for making this film. So much history under our noses that we don’t see or appreciate.
Thanks!
I have just come across this video. Beautifully made and narrated. Thanks for a thoroughly entertaining presentation.
Glad you enjoyed it!
A good friend of mine his family came from Heathrow Village, I've seen all the pictures. It's very sad, but ironically my wife worked for British Airways also flying Concord for years. I suppose it's progress in a way however you can't regret the loss of old historic buildings, used to drink in sipson and harmondsworth.
