Welcome to Island Breeze Tropicals. IBT is about growing tropical plants that I grow in my jungle here in Southwest Florida called "The Tangle", and how anyone, anywhere, can have a tropical vibe growing aroids, palms, bromeliads, orchids and more
I'll show you how to raise these plants outside if you live in the Subtropics, and how to bring them inside during the winter if you live north of Florida. So come on, "Let's get growing and have some fun!"

5 Bromeliad Myths… found on the Internet!
Thank you this helped me! I know nothing about Bromeliads!
Thanks for such an awesome and fun video Rusty!
One of my aechmea chantinii started smelling bad...I noticed the flower stalk that I left after cutting it had melted into a mush in there. When I pulled the top portion, it came off easily, I kept pulling until no more can. The roots are still perfect, I repotted and there was already a new pup emerging. I left it to dry a bit before watering again, can I still pure water in the cup when I start back watering? I use just wood chips as my potting mix.
When will you post more videos? Do you have contact information?
Why did you not cut off all the dead stuff
I have a Micale-Gro Cactus mix which they recommend for Bromeliads. Have you ever used that? Any comments about it? My plan was to also mix in some Orchid Bark and Perlite, maybe 70% Cactus mix, 20% Bark and 10% Perlite. Do you think that would work? What size Perlite do you recommend (3-6mm, 5-10mm, others?)? My Bromeliads are small, less than a foot and I just got them so potting for the first time. How long does it typically take for the plants to root? Since these are small should I still stake them out? Appreciate any help.
What about steps for potting smaller Bromeliads? I have a new 12" red flowering Bromeliad (not sure the variety) and am trying to determine how big of a pot I should use. You didn't give any basic info on pot sizing in this video. Anything you can share on that? You also showed staking it to help keep it in place as it roots but you didn't show how you should tie it up top. Should you just tie the 3 stakes together and sit the plant inside? And how long does it take for it to root and become stable enough so stakes can be removed? Appreciate any guidance. Thanks.
Thanks for the video. Question, I 3D print my own pots (with many different designs) to plant my indoor plants in (with lots of drainage holes) and they tend to be pretty light. Is it Ok to line these with pebbles to increase overall weight so the rather top heavy Bromeliads have better support? And since Bromeliads like some moisture (ie humid environment) is it Ok to sit your pots in a tray with pebbles & some water to give them some general humidity? Any recommendations on how large of a tray you should use? When watering Bromeliads should you only place water in the cup or should you fill the cup & give water to the soil too? I'm guessing self watering pots are not the best for Bromeliads but interested in your comments. Thanks.
Would compost be a good fertilizer option for bromeliads?
I have a small bromeliad. Are we to water it from the top inward? Also, my flower has died and just sitting there on the top of the green leaves. Where do I cut it off? thanks
I’m glad I’m subbed to your channel you are very informative and helpful and the only channel I turn to when I am looking for information much love man 🫡💙
Interesting! Thank you!
Hi, I recently subscribed to your channel, I think it's fantastic! I've recently become passionate about Bromeliads. I live in Sicily, an island in the far south of Italy, hot summers, the average is 30 degrees, sometimes even more... mild winters, rarely mild, rarely drops below 10 degrees. I bought a Neoregelia guacamole, the seller told me that I can keep it on the balcony and it tolerates the sun well. Can you confirm this? Thanks
Your videos have been so helpful!! Thank you so much for all the work you put into them
Thank you Rusty!
How to Fertilize POTTED Bromeliads. My bromeliads are on the trunk of a palm tree.
I just found this channel, it's anazing! Can I ask you during which season Bromelias usually bloom? Thank you!
Hi Rusty. I recall you had hybridized a Billgergia 20.Were you successful? Take care
I make some charcoal with the orchid mix last year. Everything that I replanted died.
How many times must you repeat 'attach to the tree'?
It’s just overwatering, and not enough light. Tight soil is a good thing because it makes for better contact with the roots which leads to a much smaller root mass. All my plants are directly in ceramic with the drain holes caulked shut, and the soil packed in as tight as I can get it. It cuts water needs down by 90%, and 3x the amount of time before needing to repot them.
Ceramic helps with drawing away excess moisture, thats why you have success. Bromeliads, for the most part, hate the sun. A largr root mass is better because it means the plant can access more water and more nutrients.
I bought a pot with three bromeliads in it for my wife (3 separate colors) as she loves flowers but isn’t much of a grower. I’ve grown a real interest in these things once I started researching and your channel has helped a ton! Just separated several pups and can’t wait to watch them mature. I love the look of these flowers and the longevity of the flowers are wonderful. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for your help.😊👍

Can we pollinate the bromeliad? Mine is fully pink in the leaves by the hull, looking like its trying to attract their pollinators.
How much are the big ones?
This was very helpful thanks!
Thanks for another great video! I was just trimming my bromeliads this weekend. I use kitchen scissors, which work really well for me.
Thanks, I had a bright red one and thought I was going crazy when i couldn't find it one day and in it's place was a green one, thought I lost my mind.
Hi Rusty. I’ve been binge watching your videos - I love bromeliads and have quite a collection. Can’t wait for your return!!!! Hope you’re well!!! 😃👍🏼🪴
Get to the bloody point. 4 min in and still not addressing question
Thank you.
Thanks Rusty for all the information
I hear that Queen’s Tears bromeliad is very cold tolerant and does well in North central Florida, is that true?
Your videos about bromeliads were so helpful thanks a lot brother ! Wish the best for you
I'm a tillandsia collector and just ordered 2 bromelaids..to add to my airplant collection..❤
From my experience browsing posts by people who collect and grow a great number of varieties of Tillandsiae, it seems that many in the community of Tillandsia growers do not grow other bromeliads, and vice versa. It is also the case with online stores. From my experience, Tillandsia specialty shops rarely sell other bromeliads and vice versa. It seems that the differences in appearance and care requirements are enough to differentiated the growers into different communities.
Yay, i got another dyckia for my birthday, now here in aug.2024. my new dyckia has 4 pups now growing on it. Which i am so excited bout. This is my very first pups ever. I love dyckia plants. I got a different dyckia pup plant for my birthday in aug. 2024. I got 7 dyckia plants so far this year.
