This channel is where I like to discuss my thoughts on high intensity, evidence-based resistance exercise, and its role in disease prevention/treatment as well as the extension of lifespan. There is an emphasis on the scientific literature as it pertains to these topics. However, my 40 years experience has shown that empirical evidence often precedes science by decades, so I will also discuss things that I strongly believe but cannot yet prove. I hope that these videos can serve as a platform for others to share their thoughts and knowledge.

Name Your Price
To often HIT studio owners are hesitant to reveal their prices when speaking to potential clients. In general our prices are higher than traditional personal training provided in big box gyms and we have the urge to launch into an explanation why. Instead, simply state your price without flinching and see what happens. Have confidence in your pricing and demonstrate it by stating it openly.

Indiscriminate versus discriminate weight loss
มุมมอง 4.2K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
When you create a calorie deficit you don't just want to lose weight, you want to lose fat. This is an especially important issue for those taking GLP-1 agonists. In the absence of a correct stimulus a significant amount of weight loss will come from your skeletal muscle. However, with a correct stimulus we can shunt almost all weight loss towards fat loss. This is why it is critical for those ...

Lengthened Partials are Better?

Lots of hype these days about lengthened partials being superior for hypertrophy. Is this really true, or does it just uncover that most peoples' form is just crap?
Enhanced vs Unenhanced Training Results

Good Luck Drew Baye
มุมมอง 6Kปีที่แล้ว
Today HIT expert Drew Baye is competing in the NPC Daytona Beach Classic Bodybuilding contest. He began 1 year ago around 45-50 pounds over-fat and ended up in contest condition at a bodyweight of around 187 pounds at 3-5% body fat . He did so with a balanced diet and small calorie deficit and combined that with single set to failure program using SuperSlow and TSC protocols. Workouts involved ...

Why proper training is so boring to watch and the corollary that good instruction involves very little talking.
Hypertrophy: Revisiting the Invisible Graveyard
มุมมอง 10Kปีที่แล้ว
The subset of the population that has an exaggerated hypertrophy response has likely done so with significantly more training volume than I recommend. This is absolutely true, but we must not forget the invisible graveyard.
Hypertrophy is a Side Effect
มุมมอง 36Kปีที่แล้ว
There are infinite protocols that promise hypertrophy but the truth is, that in a given individual, the protocol is not the primary determinant of muscle hypertrophy. If protocol made the difference, why did a certain bodybuilder have the best biceps and the worst calves in the sport?

Great advice… I have always done business this way. I loathe when anyone tries to manipulate me with typical sales script👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you for this. Read your book many years ago. Went to a trainer from the list on your website, had fantastic results. Great to get this info from someone I trust 🙏
bad ass
Helpful!
Doing the Lion Diet that is being championed by Dr Jordan Peterson, daughter, Mikhaila Fuller, co-founder and CEO of Peterson Academy. I bring this up because of the success I have had with both switching to carnivore and doing this HIT protocol, for several years now. So there is a market potential there. Especially, with things I hear from Dr Casey Mead and her brother, mentioning that a Dr can prescribe, food as medicine. This administration is targeting, "make America Healthy again", championed by Bobby Kennedy. How do we get you involved in this Doug? Or, this entire HIT studio owners?
No one ever buys on price - they buy on value.
Fantastic explanation. Thank you for sharing

We hear a lot about how the intensity taxes the nervous system and that it needs to recover. Would be awesome to hear you elaborate on this at depth as far as what is going on from that aspect.
How long of sessions are you offering? 30min? ppl often want to "get their money's worth" in their eyes. Do many of you have treadmills they can use on their own after a session?
This is definitely something I noticed after reading Body by Science and starting HIT. After doing the reserve grip pulldown, which I do first, I was surprised to notice how much I felt it in my core and shoulders. What? Then I would do my pushing exercise and my shoulders were wiped out, having never done an overhead press or a lateral raise. After I do the lower body squat exercise I can feel it in my calves even though my heels don't come off the ground. No doubt when the intensity is high and the need is great, the body will look farther afield to get it done.
Good video! I have another idea for how to spilt it when your life gets stressful , which I’m about to try myself, instead of every 4 to 5 days make it every 7 days, and do a 4 day split (back day, chest day, leg day, arm day) And if your itching to do a second session in each week you can simply deload , do half the weight you normally do and far from failure in a circuit training workout, something you can do 30 reps but only do 10 is less stressful on your Cns and joints, doesn’t diminish your recovery if anything helps push blood to the muscles.
Dr McGuff, does your hair color change, or does the lighting make your hair appear darker or lighter in different videos?
I Agree I’m a hairstylist with 47 years of experience. My prices are very reasonable. If they don’t like it they can go on about their business!
Only this explanation must be given to the clients: "This is NOT Weider BS"
I don't understand how your video showed up on my home page, but this was encouraging to hear. I'm not a personal trainer. I'm a beginner working out from my bedroom. With the knowledge you just shared, I'm going to make the effort not to take for granted the training I'm doing and discipline I'm learning. This is indeed an arduous activity to add in my mid 40s. So I will remember what the trainers are going through and try to work as hard as I can to make them proud. Thank you :)
No warmup before the top set?

Nicely said Doug. Honesty from the outset is so much better for the business owner & the potential client than the usual marketing smokescreen.
Absolutely agree! Either/Or! Posture!
That's how a crack dealer sells his product.
❤
Doug I disagree. In all business and sales it's important to explain the value. It's not obvious to the general public. In all sales the price isn't even discussed until the value is explained. What you're saying is great if they're beating your doors down to get the service.
In our business the workout sells itself. If someone tries to pull me into a justification discussion, I direct them to our free introductory workout and assure them there will be no sales pressure. If you are doing your workouts correctly, that is all you need.
I can't argue with you as you have years of experience as I have zero. Thanks for your response.
I agree 100% that price shouldn't be the driving factor. IF they see the 'value' they won't have any issues with the price.
Yes!!!
People, work out at home with body weight if you have no equipment. This will work.
I always had a pricing sheet that broke it down like this: Single session - $70 12 session package - $720 (save $120) 24 session package - $1200 (save $480) People love discounts. This incentivizes clients to commit to the largest package for the most savings which not only saved them money, but gave them the best results.
Were your 20min sessions? with machine set up can you get 2 clients in per hour? Thanks Jay, I appreciate all your videos as well.
I know many will disagree, but I still think, ‘first three workouts are free’ will explain everything to them. If they aren’t throwing money at you by the third workout, you didn’t do your job well enough. I know people disagree with ‘giving something away’, but it does work.
you get what you pay for.
Nonsense. Maybe, maybe not. But you paid either way.
Agree
No discounts. No packages. No special offers. No Groupons. Refferrals x 3.
honesty, always easier to remember
The information contained within this short video applies to all kinds of businesses in various sectors of industry, not just high intensity strength training studios.
I agree no need to go in a long ended explanation on why your price is what it is. I find that after I put them through a trial session and they’ve experienced the workout, price is not an issue. All I hear is, so how do i sign up. Just be upfront with it with confidence.
I apply the same approach in my optical/optometry business. Great advice!
Completely agree. I'd also add that if you're a studio that sells packages of sessions, don't over complicate it by creating too many options. You should be able to explain your package structure and pricing structure to a prospective client in about 20 seconds. Keep it simple.
Well said.
Couldn't agree more! I own a pricing strategy management consulting company so this is all that I do for a living. Don't be shy about your price! I'd also add, it's important you (as the business owner), have a price that you believe in. The more research and testing you do around your pricing model, the higher your conviction in it, which in turns impacts how you present it to clients. Love the work you do Doug!
Great message!
Are there any physical benefits of cold showers?
Hi would you consider short hill sprints done at max intensity an order for muscle?
Great presentation Dr McGuff. Makes training more enjoyable to hear truths like this and be free from the prison of thinking that more muscle will come from the next greatest program or more volume, etc. I’ll never be that muscular at all, but I know I’m still deriving some very good benefits from proper strength training without being overly concerned about producing impressive muscle size. Thank you for your explanation
Hello doc, your message is great, yound quality is very poor.
Your spelling is worse.... Seriously, I apologize as I keep forgetting my external mic and UE is very echoey.
@@dr.dougmcguff282 haha, great response
40 years ago, the same misinformation was sponsored in Weider's _Muscle & Fitness_ monthly magazine; I didn't realise that mostly all the bodybuilders and training advice was based on PEDs. I wasted so much time training hard and trying to follow those routines without the benefit of artificial aids!
Hi Doc, i tried to do my first neck training today I layed my back on my bed and did the YES movement, I immediately felt like I wanted to throw up, feeling discomfort around my plexus area, and feeling slightly dizzy still 20 min after. Do I need to stop or should I continue this kind of training ? When I did the No movement it was much easier, it's really for the YES movement that the side effects I mentionned kicked in pretty much instantely and intensely, made me feel like an old man..
Alan Aragon has explained at length that seed oils are not inherently bad. It's when a single amount of seed oil is used for hundreds of consecutive cookings in the fast food industry that is bad. This is a big confounder in the field of research on seed oils. A single cooking with any seed oil does not appear to be more harmful than a single cooking with olive oil or butter. I encourage people to check Alan out.
Great presentation as always Dr Mcguff... Prompted me to review some of your other, videos which the reference flags in my head. Would've had me guess 1 yr ago, 3 years 4 years etc.....wild under estimation in all cases......big shock with the back training video I would have guessed 5 or 6 years, nope......14 years!
Very useful! Thank you Doug!
And the same can be said for those who are resistance training without taking any weight loss medication, right?
Yup. GLP agonist are only trying to replicate what exercise does. You can get the body to stimulate muscle growth by eating enough (30g or so) at once. It’s a separate pathway. Save the $1200 a month on the prescription, and buy steak and a the fresh organic vegetables instead.
Yes. That is the scenario the parable was made for.
Good parable teaching
