@ who knows what I did! Oh well. I think in a nutshell I was expressing appreciation for this discussion, and that it resonated for me quite a bit. I have occasionally had moments while playing harp alone where time seems to stand still, and it’s like it’s not me playing at all. But playing in front of anyone, I’m far away from that kind of experience, stuck in anxiety about playing the right notes, and it’s a bit frustrating. I do think technical competence matters, and I certainly enjoy learning and striving to improve… but I wonder if an improvisational practice might also be an important part of the equation - to spend time consciously stepping outside of the "right/wrong notes" paradigm and seek to be immersed in the experience itself. Also it trains you to be able to handle the unexpected, which might lower the anxiety in performing situations. So it’s something I’m interested in exploring now. I was also suggesting Stefanie Bieber would be an interesting person to interview, too. Her teaching is along quite similar lines in terms of improvisation and playing music mindfully at whatever technical level.

I dug out a quote attributed to Charlie Parker - "Master your instrument, master the music, and then forget all that and just play". Maybe learning the instrument and the music is like loading a bow and arrow, and the more technical skill you develop the more power you have… but you still have to learn to let go, let the arrow fly! And this is the part Deborah is talking about 😄

What a fantastic conversation. Rather than following the notes on the page, I've learnt how to express my own creations by being in the Academy. I had no harp experience but by finding my inner child, and having fun with self expression with DHC's teaching, this has been possible. Hi Victoria! I'm a French harpist living in Quebec, and I have been to the Camac shop several times. It's a wonderful experience! I can't tell you which harps you should try because it really depends on your music sensitivity and what you are looking for in a harp, but what I would advice is for you to research a little bit if there are any Camac models that you are more attracted to and would like to try, and write to Camac directly to tell them that you will come at their store on a specific day and would like to try this and this harp. This is actually a Camac vendor who adviced me to proceed like this a few years back because they don't always have every model on site, but if you tell them in advance, they will strive to have the model you want for you to try the day you come visit. You can bring some scores and play at the store on the different harps. It has nothing to do with Camac, but while you are in Paris, I would also suggest the Museum of musical instruments (which I think is really close to the Camac shop), it is absolutely beautiful!

If you looked up how people build custom guitars (there are guitar kits out there!), you should be able to find information on how folks apply different types of finishes, including color stain. Hope that helps! - Victoria

30:38 - I'm a lazy beginner, but I've noticed the mentioned muddiness in the lower range of my 26 string Harpsicle. For this reason, my beginner self tends to stay in the mid-upper range of my Harpsicle; however, if you listen to Ms. Birkenstock's recent Alameda recording you hear IMO very rich, delightful bass that is not characteristic of what I'm used to hearing on harp. Of course the rendering of this exceptional bass is unfortunately hostage to the listener's audio platform. I've found that what sounds great on one person's audio system will not always sound good on another person's system. In Birkenstock's case, however, the bass of Alameda is a joy to hear on multiple platforms. I know she has a production team, but Birkenstock seems to be her own "audio engineer" in that her audio recordings often seem to be the most bold and resonating recordings I have ever heard. I do not mean to insult Birkenstock in any way, but when I listen to her, I feel a sense of Vollenweider quality without all of the new age "baggage". Also, while I greatly admire Vollenweider, he often tends to play in a rather dramatic context of other instruments while on the other hand Birkenstock's harp and enchanting voice are able to stand majestically alone.

Lena, your journey is so refreshing and your music reflects your character and ideas of life. I love your methodology of bringing out emotions of personality and awareness of the present of being home and colours allowing them to just flow together. Covid was not a great time but it did open doors to improvise a new adventure and pathways. It was a pleasure to listen to your journey. Wishing you much success Looking forward to getting your albums. Big Hugs. Victoria, looking forward to your playing Lena’s music. Thank You

I just got my 24x2 Marini double-strung in May. It popped up for sale used and I jumped right on it. I love to just noodle around with it - it is so much fun to play and I love the smaller size. Thank you for this interview. It's always nice to have more resources.
