Sailing Vessel Mig
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 21 เม.ย. 2021
My name is Kristofer Burton. I am a former US Coast Guard licensed Master with over 100,000 offshore miles on a variety of sailing vessels.
My wife and I lived on our 47-ft sailboat and raised our 5 children aboard for 11 years. In 2014 we sailed with the family from St Thomas, USVI, through the Panama Canal, offshore 4,800 miles to Hawaii and then on to Washington State. We lived on the boat for a year in our hometown and then moved onto land.
My family was ready for land life but I was not, so in 2020 we bought a little Nor’Sea 27 that we named Mig. I refit her. And I’m now continuing my circumnavigation with my buddy Norman on this amazing little offshore sailboat. My wife and family are my support and 100% behind my voyage.
This channel is for them. The videos are made for them.We welcome you to join in the journey. A special thanks to all of my patrons who have helped in so many ways with this voyage. At this point they are the ones paying for my Starlink every month.

The first time I learned about the Norsea's 3.5 foot draft and it's capabitly to go around the world I was amazed, but watching your videos, it seems like it hinders your speed all the time, have you considered adding an extra piece of wood or sth to the bottom of the keel to extend it?
Hogfish Maximus is such a great example of a well thought out boat for liveaboard cruising. Chris Morejohns blogs are a wealth of knowledge on boat design and construction
For those deck prisms just buy or borrow one. Wax it up and make a mold with some silicone rubber. Then just cast a few out of clear epoxy. Spray a coat of outdoor polurethane on the outside and install. It wont last as long as a glass one but you can make more any time you want
How long does it take your solar to charge those batteries lol? Are you constantly having to hook up to shore power and pay Marina fees just to charge your motor bank or constantly run a generator to charge your bank which in return uses fuel? Or are you actually able to 100% power that engine off the sun. Meaning as long as the sun is out you are able to bring in more energy than you are using up ?

What an amazing little boat.
The Juan de Fuca Straight can kick up, once and a while..not offshore, but can occasionally imitate it..
raised on the Puget sound the fisherman had seal Salut m80 to scare away the seal and the dolphins. had a Columbia 26 one night had a whale left the boat out of the water wake you up in a hurry.
Someone murdered an Orca offf the coast of Portugal, and then these attacks started happening, and have been spreading. Orcas have real language. It's primitive compared to dolphin in or whale language, but more then good enough to spread the story of a murder. Probably an important Orca who was killed. So the story has been spreading by word of mouth. Sound travels great distances underwater. They will eventually all find out. Theories that ignore the intelligence and language abilities of Orca are moronic.
I believe you’re exactly right. I’ve heard stories about a white whale named white Gladys. I’m not sure how much of it is true or how much of it is just a retelling of Moby Dick I would if anybody knows let me know!
@SV-Mig Myths get mixed up in reality. I had read of someone admitting to killing an Orca off of Portugal after this started. As learning to communicate with the other sophonts on the planet is NOT a priority for us, as most of us think only humans are self aware, as we build things, we will never know. Can't work it out with the Orca in this case, can't talk to them. Most people don't even know they have a language.
Wow, amazing they got out with minimal damage
It was definitely a harrowing experience. I’m sure happy that their boat wasn’t damaged too badly.
New rules say that you should head for the shore with full power. Sailed there last summer, plan to return back north this summer. Those orcas at Portugal atlantic coast orcas are very rare, only few left... Also had a close counter & friends lost their rudder.
Thank you for adding more first hand experience to the discussion! Stay safe and thanks for watching. 👍
Your real man with real views.
Thanks! I think our world needs to bring back freedom to discuss difficult and differing opinions without fear and anger. 👍
@SV-Mig I agree with that , we need to able to agree to disagree, but sadly we got all this politicaly correctness poking it's nose where don't belong. I think the boating community need to cull those orca to keep people safe , if nothing's done people are going to be there food chain. Like you said they are smart puppies. I was in a ten food dingy with a seagull outboard with probably a couple of horsepower Crossing Auckland harbour with a twelve year old and two orcas were swimming around our tin can. We thought we were special that day . Yet if that was over were those orcas are attacking those yachts we probably be aten. Eat or be eating I say . Love your channel and can't wait for more . Say hi to Norm and family from Mangamahu NZ.
Why did you choose the sea anchor as opposed to heaving to?
Nazi Honolulu. You must buy this insurance plus that one plus that one, you must perform like seal around bouys. I would skip it and head straight for Marquesas. Who needs land, anyway?
Excellent info. I am looking for one of these, so I can ship it by container to SE Asia where I live.
Watched the series.....i would watch again, you and your family are fun to watch. If i wasn't so broke i would support you.... lol. Enjoy the time with your daughter as much as you can.
Thank you so much for the encouragement! I’m glad there are people out there that enjoy the videos!
Hogfish Maximus is a great example of a self-built cruising sailboat that works. It isn't fancy but it is well built, safe and functional. Chris Morejohn is an experienced boat builder, designer and sailor.
I agree 100%! Thanks for watching.

Thanks for sharing your walk through the Titanic Exhibition. Merry Xmas.
Thanks for watching!
I really like the Nor'Sea 27 design ! ! ! They sorta look like a Flicka 20 Big Beautiful grown up sister ! ! The forward Cabin V-birth is a wonderful design but I'm really lovin the AFT CABIN !
The aft cabin is a real game changer for a little offshore boat! Merry Christmas!
Good to see One Life, glad you had the opportunity for off-screen meet-up.
Yeah, they are great people!
Tofer! Just spent hour catching up with your trip from CA to Fiji. Glad it went without major problems. Barb and I are still cruising the MoonBus and enjoying it. Best of luck with the health problems. I'm sure you'll make the right decisions for yourself and the family. Hi to Becky.
Hi! Long time since I’ve heard from you! I’m glad you’re still out there cruising the moon bus😃 I’m glad I get to stay home a little longer. Planning on heading back in April so that we can get the boat ready to sail in May. Thanks for watching!
Tale of a French press... Hi Kristofer! I recently came across your adventures aboard Mig. I'm a novice sailor, but have had the round-the-world dream since I was a young tyke. I've also LOVED (and lusted after) the Nor' Sea 27 since I first became aware of them many years ago, so discovering your TH-cam channel was exciting! When I retired a few years ago I decided that, if anything like this was going to happen, it was time to get about it. I figured I'd start with some professional guidance and signed up for an ASA 101/103/104 course out of La Paz, Baja. We had JUST anchored for our first night (7 days, no civilization) when a faulty cabinet latch disengaged and the cabinet door fell open and smashed our glass French press to pieces. All five aboard witnessed it - with horror. Given the seriousness of the situation, creative minds went into overdrive. We ultimately determined that (a) the plastic colander, (b) a large kettle, & (c) paper towels could be deployed to produce the essential nectar. A followup analysis of the paper towel inventory informed us that, while we would MAKE it (barely), we no longer had any "paper towels". What we had was a BARELY SUFFICIENT supply of "coffee filters". We carried on, had a great week, and had coffee every morning (and often in the afternoon). Cheers! (BTW - I have since acquired my first boat - a Sage 17, which is a direct descendant of the Montgomery 17, another Lyle Hess design.)
Hahaha🤣🤣 thanks for the great story about your French press! I feel your pain literally. Still using that little French press that I bought at Starbucks and it’s crossed the Pacific Ocean now! Thanks for watching. I sure appreciate the comment as well. I am staying home through the rest of the hurricane season earning a little money so we can continue our voyage. I fly back to Fiji April 1.
I see your video is older. Have you updated to run the router/system from your house batteries rather than an inverter yet? One less thing to fail, and more efficient by eliminating the losses thru conversion.
Yes, I should do a update on this video. Although I like the flat mount, the plexiglass they use is not up to marine use in the sun all of the time and spider cracked all around all of the bolts and leaked water in and destroyed my Starlink. I have since changed to the high-speed dish and it is wired directly into our 48 V motor bank and it draws way less. We can leave it on all the time offshore and I don’t have any connection issues since we are using the high-speed dish.
Damm fine looking Pizza, that Marina provides some great services.
Yeah, it’s a great place to spend the hurricane season!
So you never talked about weight difference Combustion - electric Does make a difference for ballast?
Significantly less weight with electric especially if you use lithium phosphate batteries and you eliminate the diesel fuel. Eventually I will replace the diesel tank with a new water tank. Overall I am actually always trying to reduce overall weight on the boat. In 8000 offshore miles since the refit the ballast has been fine.
Great! Do you have a diagram of your connections and the detailed descriptions of the components that you have?
Sorry it’s taken me so long to reply, but I do not actually have a diagram of it anymore. I wish I did. It would come in handy when I am now tracing through to add new components and stuff.
Hey guys just some Nor'sea 27 questions since you now have a few thousand miles under the keel. Would you have preferred an aft cockpit where Norm would be sharing the same cabin in a quarter berth? or do you prefer the privacy? When you two sailed across the gulf in evie may did the raised coaming Norm installed help in keeping some water out.(what was that material?) Norm since you are a guy of larger stature if you could do it over would you have bought a larger boat like a baba 30 or another instead of a Nor'sea? Could you tell any difference in the heating up of the cabin using Norm's diesel stove versus Tophers propane stove. Yeah you guessed it, I'm looking at Nor'seas and gathering ideas. Thanks.
I’ll let Norm speak for himself, but as for me, I would never trade the aft cabin version. Even if I was on the boat alone, it’s a great addition to a little boat. I also like the center cockpit. I think it is a little more protected.the cockpit comings on Norm’s boat and on mine now that we’ve added them are a must add. That being said once you add them, it really does take care of the water flowing through the cockpit. As for heat produced when cooking I think they are probably a wash. It really doesn’t matter much until you get below the equator or near it. The nice thing about norms stove is you can use it for actual heat if you want to. The downside to it is that it doesn’t gimbal and can’t. Thanks for watching! And thanks for the comments!
How did rate Bodega bay , I was working over there & my friend has his 37’ sailboat there , have a good time at home
The people in bodega Bay were super friendly. The marina is definitely a dive, but the price was amazing and representative of that. The birds still rule bodega Bay lol
❤ Fair winds and following seas!!! Been on since the beginning of Mig, and I’m in for long haul. Let’s go!
Thank you for the encouragement and thank you so much for watching!
Keep going
I’m going to keep sailing as long as I can! Thank you for watching.

Keep going til you cant get your leg over the rail !! Live life now for yourself or someone will do it for you and have all the fun!!
I like that line so much I think I’m going to make a little plaque out of it and put it on the boat! “Keep going till you can’t get your leg over the rail!”
Great update Tofer! Thanks! Sorry to hear about the tremors. Praying you’ll get good medical care for the long-haul. So glad you are making this trip !
Thanks! I always enjoy your comments as well thanks for watching. It means a lot to me.

Love your channel, have followed for a long time. Norman is a hoot. Hope your continue on your voyage. I'll be watching. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I am going to give it my best shot to get around the world!
Looking forward to your sailing adventures. Sweet van!! We are of similar minds. Been small class B van shopping for years and was about to buy a 2007 road trek 190 in Tampa FL then the hurricane hit. Got a 2017 Carado Banff in LA as a salvage vehicle-stolen and electronics ripped out so it will be my project for the winter. Fair wind and following seas. Dean
It sure is a cool little van! Looking forward to future land travels after my circumnavigation! Thanks for watching.
Hi Kristopher - I watched your video this morning, and it was very timely. We have a close friend who recently found out she has Parkinsons, so I have been learning a lot. You have a great attitude and we know you will have the same determination and strength you have shown with living your dream of circumnavigating the world with Norm and MiG. Bruce and I were just wondering what you would do once you accomplished that. Now we know after seeing your tour of your beautiful van! It will be time to come home and bask in the love and support of your family and friends. Maybe we will see you in ANC if we get there before you set sail again. Take good care!
Hi Kim, I’m going to try and call you on the phone. I am in Anacortes right now and we are moving to Stanwood next month, but I would like to see you guys if I have a chance while I’m home.

Got it!
Wishing you all the best. My older brother has Parkinson’s Disease. If it is any comfort it took many years for it to progress so I hope you decide to continue the journey. He had the ‘Deep Brain Stimulation’ procedure and it helped quite a bit fyi. Thanks for the effort that it takes to produce and upload the vids. It’s appreciated.
Thank you for the encouragement. It really means a lot to me! I’m gonna give it my best shot to get around the world!
Love that little van man. No apologies for the vids man. Just put the content out.
Thank you, Aaron! It is a cool little van. I’m looking forward to doing some explorations on land in the future. I’m thinking of traveling to all of the places that I have loved as I grew up as a kid.
Ahoy Kristofer, I am hopeful for you & Norm to be able to continue your adventure around our blue marble!
I hope so too!
Kristofer, be healthy!
Thanks!!
