Not bad, but this gpu can run fsr on linux?
One year later? I still sell them like crazy.
You didn’t overclock
My reply got removed many many times. Here goes again. For those that get artifacting, something broke with the assets from 20th anniversary, but you CAN download an earlier version using steam console. I am running on a Pi 4 4GB model, not the greatest, but at lowest resolution, it works and is around 20 ish fps. I can even put shaders and textures at higher settings. Not overclocked yet. Just base model with a heatsink.
For completeness: In Steam console, do command "download_depot 220 221 3666218991449795038" for November 23 base files for HL2.
I'm quite surprised in the performance. I remember my first PC STRUGGLING to run hl2! It ran like crap, looked jagged and odd, Was buggy and mouth movements during speech didn't work.(I thought that was some stylistic choice lmao)
i dont see any partition i can install windows on, only floppydisk, is there an option to overcome this with this method?
For shits n' giggles, I tried it on a pie 4 4GB running bullseye, but get SIGSEGV , i.e.segmentation fault. Tried first compiling in a dev container with podman, using bullseye minimal image as the base, and running on the host. I usually don't want to cruft up the host with dev files. When that gave segfault, I tried to make sure I have the same version of libraries by compiling on the host itself and both options give segmentation fault when starting the finished launcher. =( I'm lost, the finished binary seems 64 bit, but I couldn't pass --64bit or -8 to waf, it wasn't accepted. Any ideas?
Solved it. This needs to be run from within the desktop, not the console. Do startx then do everything from a terminal emulator in the desktop environment.
Update: The leaked source-engine no longer works with the latest version of Half Life 2 on Steam, once there was a major update at November 16 2024, to get it working, must use a version prior to the 20th anniversary update.
8:51 I was about to take my car and drive to city 17 myself to knock that thing out of the air.
@@DJChappie001 😂
So wait, ur basically running half life 2 on just a cpu cooled with a super small fan…and it looks like its at 60fps? Wow. That truly is impressive.

Unfortunately L4D2 doesn’t run on this version of the Source Engine - but will look at other options!
@ tnx man
I bought this exact card from Free Geek of Minneapolis two years ago for about $12. I knew right away it was a 3Dfx card, but I had no idea which one it was. Glad I held onto it!
@@joshreiman wow! You got a great deal! 🏆
How come a 8mb card beats a 16mb card running at the same frequency in some tests?
I think AGP vs PCI bus. It’s either that or driver differences :-)
Isn't it possible to just install in directly from steam into raspberry?
Unfortunately no - there is no ARM64 version of Half-Life on Steam. You could use an emulator like Box86, but it would be slower than this native ARM64 build 😎
@jamesfmackenzie I had no idea that Half-Life 2 is now open source. But it's not much of a surprise, the game is 20 years old...
This would be a cool series "Making Game X run on the Raspberry Pi".
Great idea!
I wish I knew about this trick as a kid. I had Celeron 400/64MbRam/Velocity100 system back in 99. It was a good performer until Max Payne was released in 2001. It ran at around 10 fps on this card.
I had a similar machine! With the legendary Celeron 300A 😎 Wish I had kept it around!
oh jesus... portal is only 2 ish years away from it's 20th anniversary. That makes me feel sick.
Old but gold! 😎
My retro board needs to have at least 1 ISA slot (for my favorite TerraTec 'ActiveRadio' FM card with RDS). 🤷♂ But the WAVEBLASTER header on this board is VERY COOL. 👍
would certainly like to see a few modern titles but that have decent optimization . i suppose it would have to be vulkan and not direct x right ?
Yep! Vulkan or OpenGL 😎
With a little bit of more work, maybe possible to just replace the RAM modules, to have more RAM. This have been working with other cards, even with other 3DFX cards. Might worth a try...
Wow, didn't know that my old graphics card might be valuable. I think that I still got 'em in storage.
Awesome!
Thanks!
I think I noticed empty RAM solder points. Would it be possible to add the RAM?
I think I might have one of these cards in my random old video card box 🤔 I remember thinking that it looked like a bit like a Voodoo, but because it didn’t have any 3dfx branding, I overlooked it.
Good luck with the search! 😎
Wonder if you can use higher density ram packages on the card or not

That’s a shame! The buyers are too knowledgable 😂
Urrrgh, just tried this on my new setup, but had installed the updated HL2 on my main rig. The updated game assets are *not* compatible with this build!
:-( is there anyway to downgrade or get the old assets back?
@@jamesfmackenzie I'll have access to my original HL2 disk over Christmas and will try to extract the assets.
@ good luck! :-)
For artifacting use steam console and download the version from November 2023. I tried going into details many many times but get removed.
Trying again, just to get it out there. In Steam console, do command "download_depot 220 221 3666218991449795038" for November 23 base files for HL2.
Basically the Velocity is the discount 3000, as long as you fiddle with the registry editor

Today any 3Dfx card is strongly recommended 😊
😎
So, fun story for me... I briefly bought one of these cards from a seller advertising it as a Voodoo3 1000 with 16MB of RAM. It turned out, that was miscategorized and after a bit of discussion I opted to return it. (Coincidentally, the actual listing I bought is in your video near the beginning at 0:47 for $165.99). It was priced like a full Voodoo3 and a bit disappointing when it turned out to be the Velocity 100 with half the VRAM for that price. I exchanged it for a proper Voodoo3 2000 with 16MB of VRAM and the new card works great.
Glad your story had a happy ending! V3 2000 is a superior card! 😎 Between the Velocity and the V3 1000, I almost prefer the Velocity due to the higher clocks. 😎
@@jamesfmackenzie Absolutely! I was open to the idea of keeping the card but the price was too high. I was talking with vSwitchZero about it and confirmed it did have the higher clocks, was running a pretty spicy 2.46v on the regulator and with active cooling seemed stable up to 166MHz, but the 8MB of VRAM felt like a bottleneck, especially at the price. (I didn't pay list price for it but wasn't far off after shipping and taxes) Ultimately, the Voodoo3 2000 with the same clocks and 16MB of VRAM will be the better card for this system. Now I just need to finish repairing the PCI versions that have been languishing on the healing bench for ages...
Ahh Voodoo... the first iteration was very impressive but also even more expensive as you had to use VGA pass-through from separate 2d card. Also as a side effect you could run only full screen applications (due to the primitive VGA pass-through). Besides Voodoo what makes me nostalgic is the memory of being able to buy a serious GPU below 300$...
Modern GPUs are way too expensive 😢
The expression 'the proof is in the pudding' is the modern idiom for evaluating something. It evolved from a proverb about testing sausages. ( AMD ATI Radeon 1GB was not yet available. ) The Voodoo 3 is a failure, in terms of image quality. The solution was to use any other 3d accelerator. Such as Intel 740 3D AGP or nVidia TNT2 - Here's a video of that th-cam.com/video/TGyb_N_FGp8/w-d-xo.html
I have a box of them. I bet that thing weighs 70lbs.
I’m very jealous! 😎
@@jamesfmackenzie I was an integrator/OEM for pre-built computers when I owned a business. I had a box of those and a couple custom variants that are buried in a box at storage somewhere. Theres probably 60 or so in that box along with driver disks and game bundles, Hexen, Doom, Quake, and a few others like Wheel of Time and a custom title called Astrospace(tm) that was never released for the 12mb variant with the riser board. Who knows where they sit in tha storage anymore. I'll have to look for them next time I go swimming in there.
@@TronixGuy93 sounds like you must have a treasure trove of memories in that storage unit! Good luck with the swim :-)
