Lampworking / Flameworking - 101 Just Shards - 104 Glass Demo
Hello my friends! 🌹✨ I have been asked to do another demo on just blowing shards….and here it is! There are a few ways to blow shards…adding a blob of glass to the end of a tiny pipe and blowing hard …or building up a hollow chamber on the end of a tiny pipe and softly blowing! 😅 Obviously, the latter one works the easiest and I will share the ins and outs to the best of my ability.
I hope this demonstration inspires you to make and enjoy blowing shards!🌹
I hope you all enjoy, like and are subscribed!! 🥰👋🏽
Thanks so much for joining me! Cheers - Robin 🌈💫✨

    Thanks Robin! I started blowing out shards a while ago, and now that has morphed into blowing out hollow forms that remain intact. I dip the end of my hollow mandrel into bead release, blow out the bead release that is inside the mandrel and then let it dry. I start my wraps on the bead release and then coil pot my way up a ways and then close off the end of the glass. Now rotate, rotate, rotate to even out the heat. Then, while still rotating, blow the glass bubble out. BUT, don't let it get really thin. Then I put it into the kiln to anneal (still on the mandrel). After it is annealed and cooled, I just slide it off the end of the mandrel. It's a lot of fun, and I can pretend that I'm doing big stuff in a hot shop! I'm collecting a bunch of the forms and will incorporate them into one of my weird alien reef woven seed bead sculptures.

    That snowflake is adorable. It looks like it would be complicated to make, but it's dot placement skill. I keep meaning to ask...how do you fit the the center coated mandrels into the kiln so the bead is not too close to the front opening? Thanks for the great info you share with us! Patricia

    • @scottwoodresearch
      @scottwoodresearch 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Patricia! 🥰✨Thank you sooo much! I am so happy you enjoyed this one… And thank you so much for your generous support. It means so much to us! 🌹❄️ when I put my mandrel in the annealer, I have a tiny kiln shelf in the back that will support the end of the mandrel. The bead never touches the ground, but hovers midway in the oven. Sometimes the mandrel gets pushed into the fiber-frack on the back wall, but I have never had a problem with it. 🤗 I hope that helps solve the mystery! And I hope you are doing well and had a wonderful and happy new year!!🎊 Cheers to you Patricia!! ❄️- Robin and Patrick 🥰✨🌹

    Thank you so much Robin, I was in a post-Christmas slump and couldn't motivate myself to create anything, but your latest video gave me the spark of inspiration i needed! I didn't have any of that encased colour or any twisted cane in light colours, so I just pulled a thick opaque stringer and layered that up with the clear and it worked really well! I hope you had a good rest over the holidays, sending love to you and Patrick xxxx

      @maggiebannenberkowitz9254 Hi Maggie!🤗🌹 So glad are enjoying the demos! 🙏🏽 As far as the shaky hands go….there are a few things out there. There is something called the ‘lampworking creation station’ that has hand rests but I couldn’t seem to find a seller for it online. There are pictures if you google it! I have also seen an ‘electric mandrel spinner’ but need to do more research on it. ✨ when I work I tend to wrest my hand slightly on the torch marver….this tool is essential for me and can’t flamework well without it! I do not use it as a glass marver so it stays relatively cool. I also add glass at an angle for things like dots, because I have my pinky finger curled around the mandrel to steady my hand. 😅 That’s all I do…but I still have days where I just can’t make anything because I’m more shaky than usual. That’s when I stop so I don’t waste any oxygen!😅🙏🏽 I hope this helps you out!! Thanks so much for sharing!! 🥰Cheers- Robin 🌹✨✨✨✨

    Loved this video. Had to turn on cc and mute the sound because the plinky piano was distracting but the cc worked fine thanks to the good camerawork.

    Hello! Is this soft glass or borosilicate? Love the video. I am a glass artist but have never used this technique. I am also very familiar with torching copper wire for wire wrap projects, I've just never combined the two. I work with borosilicate, so just wondering what type of class you're working with here. Thank you :)

      Hello Lotte! 🤗🌹 Thanks so much! I’m glad you are enjoying the demos…. All of the 101 and 102 demos are made with 104 glass. However, any of these patterns, designs and techniques can cross over into Boro glass. I do work in 33 COE as well, mostly for ornaments. I enjoy the hard glass but find it more expensive with the oxygen and color rods…. I wish I had an endless supply of oxygen! Would love to play more with the Boro.😅 Either way, the wire will stick permanently to any hot glass! I’m excited for you to play with this in the Boro…I love how intricate wire wrapping has become and would make for some fantastic pieces!💫 Happy New Year and cheers to you- Robin 🌈🌹✨✨

      You are welcome. Yeah there were a few things that had me guessing. But I like it. For my latest project I’ve been using it make each of the kids (4) a game board called Senet. It really came in handy making the 120 squares. Have a wonderful new year. Cheers. Patrick

    What kind of mandrel is that? Stainless steel?

      @scottwoodresearch 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Koball! 💫🌹 My mandrels are made from standard 3/32” stainless steel welding rod. I cut them 12 inch so I have plenty of room to work in the middle.🤗 Great question! Thank you!!👋🏽 Cheers- Robin🌈✨✨✨

      Hi MissParadise! 🌹💫 These have only cracked on me when I have purchased them pre-made. I’ve never had issues with the goldstone when I make my own…..no clue why….but it works great!😅 Have a lovely day!! Cheers- Robin 🌈✨🌹🌹🌹

      Thanks a bunch.. I’ve done a couple of things with it since. All I have to say is, ‘Damn I should have had one of these a long time ago.” What a time saver. After messing with the air pressure for each size a was able to get them to be pretty flush. Have fun wit it and have a wonderful new year. Peace ✌️
