Welcome to my dream of building a homesteading type of lifestyle. Carpenter by trade and grew up in the city with lots of trips out bush and the odd visit to family farms.
I have a goal to live a more simple rural life and I will be sharing my journey towards that. I currently live in Suburban Melbourne in Victoria, Australia.
I am a knife maker and avid gardener when I can. I am a beginner at Blacksmithing, true farming, butchering, sheep herding and TH-cam. But I am happy to share the journey with everyone.
My main aim in this channel is so that my 2 wonderful children and my gorgeous granddaughter can follow along in my journey and learn that the only time you have failed is when you haven’t tried.
I welcome everyone to come along and learn with me, I’m sure to make plenty of mistakes that you can learn from. So please comment, like, subscribe, share and most importantly have fun on the journey with me and my lads.

Why harden before grinding edge ?
How long did you grow the yacon for before harvesting?
Basically it grows from start of spring when the tuber buds until the weather gets cold and the plant dies back. so full growing season. Them main part of tuber growth is at end of season so the longer the growing season the bigger the tubers.
Where can i get the marker that i can wrap the cotton cloth around in order to do this electro etching if you don’t mind please?
Honestly I just made mine. Threaded a piece of copper rod and glued it into a piece of timber, first plate is just a piece of copper drilled larger than the thread, wire to the power goes around the rod next, lastly a threaded copper plate to lock in the wire. I basically just used some of my bolster material to make it. You can do it as simply as wrapping a wire around a cotton bud/Q tip and tracing the design.
@@DownunderFarmandForge ah i see man. Great work. Thank you a lot
No Dramas at all
I think your bandsaw is slightly unbalanced.
My Bandsaw is a horizontal to vertical type with the drive being held by gravity instead of a spring for gear changes. Not a perfect model for sure but it also only cost $120 brand new. If I went professional I would get something more suited, but this one will scream and do the job until them.
Great video I love wide beveled blades. Gives you a lot to work with
Yes it does! and thank you
Thanks
No dramas
WOW! 😍 cheers from 🇵🇭
Thanks and g'day from 🇦🇺
What kind of paper did you use?
The Blue and Red paper are a heavier weight craft paper, but the white is just normal printer paper. Just make sure to put lots of resin and clamp tight enough to squeeze out any excess and get everything nice and compressed.
where can i buy this jig?
In Australia at nordicedge.com.au/ who is the maker. In USA or other places in the world I would recommend Knifekits.com www.knifekits.com/vcom/sandergrinder-bevel-jig-stainless-steel-p-16186.html At both places you need to order the file guide separate to the jig and they are both a newer model than in this video.
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
What happened to putting in a few tsp.of vinegar to pull out the calcium from the bones?
Honestly it is not required, if you cook for long enough it will extract by itself. I have done a video on the extraction of calcium from egg shell using vinegar, that is chemical reaction making Calcium acetate and that is the same effect that the vinegar has on the bones. The thermal breakdown using a slow cooker will still liberate the calcium from the bones as shown by how soft the bones are at the end of the cook time.
Please be advice that the commercial "boiled linseed oil" has drying agents that most cases are metal dryers like cobalt or so... I wonder if "Raw linseed oil" would give the same result but been much healthy option.
By all means go ahead and try it, but the drying agents are actually helpful to the process once applied
What did you use for glue?
This is what I use G flex Epoxy amzn.to/2LNCY1g
Your corn looks good! If you can plant your seeds about 10 inches apart (thin it out) your ears will get bigger. Hope helps you for next time good luck!
Thanks, I generally have a much larger spacing, this was an experiment to see how close I could grow in a little planter about a foot and a half square. Basically went with half spacing from normal and yes it was totally to crowded, very little pollen falling through to the inner ears because of the leaves above.
@@DownunderFarmandForge TH-cam put your video up recommended I thought you did good job! Just an old Hillbilly from mountains in North Carolina we really love us some corn around here! But good luck my friend!
@@YosemiteSam720 hoping to be moving up that way next year myself, waiting on my Visa. This one is a few years back, funny how TH-cam works sometimes
I'm making that scribe in the vise. Genius. ❤
I can’t take credit for it, bought it years ago. Definitely a great piece of kit.
nice oyster knife. what kind of steel do you use.
That one was Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel, which tends to be the normal stainless that I use. Nice simple stainless that works well will forge heat treatment and reliable results
Great video series mate!! And in the atates we call them tea spoons as well my friend...lol😅
Thank you kindly. Not according to the song by the Crash Test Dummies 😉.
This brings back so many memories. I made this same journey from Australia to the US to be with my man. I ended up living there for almost 20 years, and then I brought my sweetie out here to Australia to live. Just know there will be an adjustment, but that is okay. It took me about 2 years before I truly acclimated to my new home. Unlike my American hubby who felt right at home almost instantly in Australia. Americans are going to love you(they are lovely people) and for some odd reason really enjoy our accent. It can be stressful waiting to hear back from govt officials whilst wanting more than anything to be with your loved one, but it will happen. If you go to the American consulate for an interview, make sure you give them exactly what they ask for. Good luck with it all!
Thank you, it is very stressful that is for sure. I finally have the interview booked in a couple months time, about 2 years after our application went in and the same 2 years since we have seen each other in person. I can be really hard with just video calls, although I am glad we at least get those. Hopefully in a few months I will put a video together about it all, but while still waiting that is a bit too much at the moment. Already putting together the documents that they require at the consulate to make certain that we have it all in place. Again a big thank you for the well wishes.
Always beautiful
Thank you gorgeous
After plunging the knife, do you heat treat the metal in an oven?
This one is 1084 steel, Full details on the heat treat process in this video here th-cam.com/video/b0NNOE8RYaU/w-d-xo.html

Thank you Jenn! Cheers!
Lovely bit of work mate 👌 class knife too love it 🔥
Thank you kindly
Thank you. I couldn't find the single slot jig anywhere.
Yeah I like the single slot, the newest one has a lot more flexibility though. The budget one looks a little too unsupported for my tastes I like something firm behind the blade when I am grinding.
@DownunderFarmandForge that's what I thought about the budget one also. I have one I bought from OBM but I can't use my file guide with it. I tend to booger up my false edge. I need more practice grinding freehand.
Freehand comes with time and practice like anything else, despite what the doubters will tell you the skills picked up with jig grinding will help with the freehand. Can't really help much with false edge as they have never really been part of my designs.
@@DownunderFarmandForge thanks man. I was thinking about making a jig for filing false edges. I saw a video on it. Looks pretty slick. I could make it for around 20-25 bucks.
Awesome, give it a sot on a practice piece or three and see how you go
That’s a really nice knife🐸🍺🔪🔥
Cheers mate it is the Cowboy knife I made in the last set of videos
Just flat out cheating
Not sure what part you think is cheating, but you do you
Is that model of jig discontinued?
Not sure which one was in the video, if the single slot for the clamp then it is discontinued, but they now make one with 2 slots by the same maker. You can get it from Nordic Edge in Australia nordicedge.com.au/bevel-jig-for-use-with-file-guide-v2/ they also have a new budget model or Knife Kits dot com in the States www.knifekits.com/vcom/sandergrinder-bevel-jig-stainless-steel-p-16186.html?osCsid=7ef5bb9a560804883aa28005ed9d0ba4 . No commission for me either way just really love the products and Bjorn the owner of the company is a really great guy.
That's awesome cutter
nice job man, it’s better than anything I could do
Cheers mate, practice is all it takes
That bandsaw scared the shit out of me!
Camera angles can be deceiving, that and I have spent a lot of time using it so what seems like a tricky task with dangerous hand position is actually the safest way to use the tool for the job.
You did a fantastic job nevertheless, a good looking blade that turned out to be, keep up the great work. What wood type was that btw?
@@Edwards7084 spalted Blackwood it is a Tasmanian timber.
Easiest way... Buy expensive grinder, manufacture, or buy jig, achieve easiest bevels.
Yup unfortunately easy takes money as simple as that. Cheap options, file by hand with or without a jig or freehand with an angle grinder, both are hard work and even harder to get a saleable quality knife.
@@DownunderFarmandForge this is absolutely true. The hard part of all of the methods to make easy, is to make what we can, to earn enough to buy what makes things easier.
I have seen all sorts of methods used do do it to get to the expensive grinder part, all comes down to how much free cash you can put in, how much sweat you are willing to put in or how dodgy a setup you are willing to use. My shoulder has been reconstructed 4 times so filing just isn't and option for me, freehanding an angle grinder I could probably manage but to sketchy for me, one wrong move and you ruin your work. Upside down belt sander in a vise, again a bit sketchy but possible, 1x30 beltgrinder is what a lot of people start with, multitool attachment to a benchgrinder is where I started, I then went on to a conversion for the multitool to a 2x48 that used to be available here in Australia, then finally on to the 2x60 Shopmaster from 84 Engineering. Even still I am looking to upgrade to a 2x72 when I move to the States. Just start where budget and ease of use meet for you and take it from there, learn the tools and the methods that work and honestly if the hobby is for you before drooping too much coin and see how it goes.
@@DownunderFarmandForge thank you for saying all of this. It's encouraging.
Mate the journey of One Thousand miles starts with one step. I have made a few hundred knives at this point but did not start at the top of the range equipment and still not using my dream equipment. Work with what you have until you know what you want to do and how to do it with what you have, then take the next step when you can afford it and again learn the process. You improve as you go along, learn what equipment will help you to make the next step and move on each one step at a time. I still spend money on new equipment that I wasn't thinking about when I see something handy that will improve my process, and I am never shy about taking classes and being the student to someone who knows things I don't. The Paradox of TH-cam is you have to be the expert on what you are showing people or you will get called out, heck sometime you do anyway, but you have to keep learning so you have something new to show or it gets stale.
how long did this take to make (beside the scary way you made it, the blade and handle ended up so Beautifull)
Normally takes me a couple of days start to finish on 1 knife, but they are not full days. nothing scary in how it's done, just lots of practice with my tools.
That's not a knife
well it ain't a spoon 😂
@DownunderFarmandForge lol this was a great video, thanks keep up the excellent content
thanks
excellent video. no bs just what it says in the title PROPS !

Metal cutting bandsaw with a free hanging motor, does the job but not what it signed up for, all good
Nice one!
Thank you
Молодец!
Spasibo
u made it look to easy .
Lot's or practice and it becomes fairly easy
What are the materials needed to make a knife? I need a list
Hardenable steel, glue, your choice of handle material and pin material. these are the basics for the material required.
@@DownunderFarmandForge ah ok thanks I will try it some day!
I just got the same sunbeam pie maker only it makes four pies I have one question does the pie maker has to be hot when you put the pastry in? I think it will be too hot thank you
Yes you warm it up before starting to cook, you want to be fairly quick making the pies and it all works out. I preform the bases, have the filling and lid standing by. once you work out the amount of filling it is really quick.
??
Was there a question you had?
Beautiful knife dear
Thanks love
Male platypus are poisonous
they certainly are they have poison glands and spurs on their rear legs.
Onions and garlic are very toxic to dogs!!!
If the dogs are reactive to them there is an issue, also depends on the amount given. I have never had a dog react to garlic at all, and have actually brought high end dog food that contains garlic. As far as onion yes be very conservative with how much they consume.
Probably need to change the rubber on the bandsaw wheel, a bit of electrical tape would do the job
There is no rubber on the bandsaw wheels, has always been a direct metal to metal connection from new.
When you have a Fowlers Vacola jar, you have it for life unless it breaks. They are really thick. Same with the Weck jars.
Great points, I still think the cost is a little high on them as they are only rated to the Fowlers system of bottling. If they tested and rated up to pressure canner levels then that would make a huge difference
I just figured out the very “obvious “ rule to keep the jig at a consistent angle. I was losing my mind. Just seeing this would have saved me 4 blanks.
It takes some time and lots and lots of practice but it will become second nature. It does transfer to freehand grinding with time too.
Good looking sheath!🤜🤛
Thank you
Another beauty!!
Thanks Jenn
