This plotline was always pretty thin to me.
Great video! Your dates for constitution class is off by a century though. Launched 2245
Yup he said 2345. It happens . Excited for whole video
Is it an objective truth that truth is subjective?
12 Rules For Life:
the picture of Sisko smiling at 4:52 was great. Sisko was already a war criminal at this point, so what is another body added to the count (hence him deleting that log about the whole incident).
Ds9 was always questioning the Eutopian ideals of the Federation! That’s why it was so good! It was real! Picard is the same way
The framing of doing what is necessary to stop tyranny but only so lone as one remains morally pure strikes me as being tolerant of intolerance.
This episode reminds me of Winston Churchill's decision to let Coventry get attacked during WW2 after the allies broke the German Enigma code at Bletchley Park. Churchill knew beforehand that Coventry would get attacked multiple times. Phenomenal episode.
The most brilliant part of the episode is actually how MUCH blood is now on Sisko’s hands. The biomimetic gel that his “contact” required in exchange for a flawless data rod was a front. There never was a contact. There wasn’t even a perfect data rod. Garak KNEW it would be identified as a forgery… but the time and attention it required for it to be analysed gave Garak a chance to infiltrate the shuttle and set the bomb… The bomb made out of biomimetic gel. His final conversation put the last piece of the puzzle into place for us. It doesn’t MATTER that the rod wasn’t genuine. The damage it suffered during the explosion would explain any imperfections discovered once the Romulans got ahold of it. Edit: The reason Sisko was so conflicted wasn’t because he would try to lie to a Romulan. That he would invent evidence that would bring an entire empire into war. He may not have wanted to admit it, he might even lie to himself to try to calm the discomfort of his conscience… A part of him KNEW a counterfeit holo-record was a stupid idea and had almost no chance of success. Sisko enlisted Garak’s help because he knew GARAK would be able to do the things that he couldn’t do himself. It gave him some distance from using murder as a tool. The end of the episode wasn’t him trying to come to grips with the series of petty crimes he directly authorised in the course of the episode. Garak made him stare the truth right in the face. Sisko used murder as a political expediency. The end of the episode is Sisko coming to grips with that grim truth. And he could live with it.
What is anyone willing to do to save lives for the greater good?
Yes, Sisko did the right thing (for a change - poisoning Maquis-Colonies was the wrong thing for example!) here! Hell, him doing so allows the likes of "Me on high horse judging you!" Picard (who had the gall of telling Sisko, a family man that he should go where the service tells him to go - despite the fact that Picard almost always had the good assignments himself and he had no family of his own, so he could simply go where Starfleet sent him, without having to look out for a wife and chidlren he never had!) too judge Sisko! If the Federation loses here, they will all be either dead or Dominion slaves (or in hiding - having taken their ships way beyond what used to be Federation space!)
Not for nothin', but where the hell was Section 31? In the Pale Moonlight is like a TUESDAY for them! And PS... HIRE Garak!! How do you have Julian and Garak, and pick JULIAN over Garak?!?!😅
The short answer is yes, it was necessary, and Sisko displayed full moral conscience throughout the episode.
In the fight to survive, there are no rules. It's not even about victory. Billions would have died had he not done what it takes. Survival is paramount above all else, and only cowards cling to silly ideals like honour and ethics in the face of annihilation. When your life is on the line, anything goes.
No, the Federation didn't lose it's soul. It did what was needed to shield BILLIONS from a horrible tyranny. It was the shield that was needed. It showed how much humanity had grown.

I watch this episode and to be quite honest in war there is nothing off the table and what he did could be considered minor in trying to save behold of the alpha quadrant I think in this instance the ends did justify the means and I think if he was tried at a court marshal he would get off
Literally the best Star Trek episode, of any series, ever. Because, I can live with it...
Both can and are true in this instance.
Star Trek really grew up in this episode. While warching it, i honestly thought I was watching an episode of 'Babylon 5'. And I still remember so many Trekkies pissed off at this episode.
I believe this is a false dilemma. As you note the Federation's soul may not even be in play. Neither Starfleet Command nor the Federation Council ordered the specifics of the operation. To pars it down the Federation's crime would have been trusting Starfleet, and Starfleet's crime would have been trusting Sisko. But Starfleet had every reason to trust Sisko and the Federation Council had every reason to trust Starfleet. Sisko and Garak are alone responsible for the lie and Garak is more or less alone responsible for the explosion and murder of Vreenak (even Sisko didn't order that). Garak likely doesn't believe in any such metaphysical hooey as a soul, so no loss there. Sisko's actual crime was either working with Garak to begin with or not exposing Garak at the end. But not exposing someone is a passive act. Which I think can be argued is slightly less morally problematic (as compared to Garak's role). A lot boils down to how proactive Sisko was in covering for Garak. But even having said all that, we are forgetting that Sisko's action are all divinely sanctioned by the Prophets, so there's no moral dilemma at all. *dusts hands*
The Federation was compromised the moment they allowed Section 31 to exist.
In war all that matters is victory. It is as simple as that.
true and then write history like you stuck to your values.
Were the romulans eventually going to enter the war? If yes (and that is likely the case), then all this is just quibbling over some admittedly morbid details. It's like the getting hung up the British entering the Great War over Belgian neutrality when everyone knows that it was really about the overall balance of power in Europe.
A lot of folk have already weighed in; I think by the 24th century there were legal ways to get genetic treatments, vs, augmentation. And it's true, they're also looking to avoid an arms race too. Though, one aspect that's always bothered me about the whole thing... Why would the other species within the Federation be so OK with banning it? Maybe the Vulcans are like 'Ah yes, the humans have a dark spot in their history, we too have a dark spot in our history; and, the temptation to escalate in gene manipulation is very real, we should refrain' --- But, why are the other member species so OK with it? Do many of these species have similar moments where augmentation = 'things go poorly every time' You'd think that since the advantages are self-evident, most member species would want to explore the viability of augmentation. From an out of universe standpoint the answer is simple: "because they didn't write those stories (yet?) lol" - but in universe? Kinda makes you think.
They went that far with the borg they committed genocide against the borg
I agree with you Sisko was not wrong now Morally yeah the Federation pride it self of high standards But how many has The Federation look the other way when section 31 did acts that goes against Federation principals like what they did to odo witch is genocide & we are talking about the Romulus
Dude, DON'T treat 'Disco Trek' as canon. It was just some T-agate's T-ever Dream. 😏
The Dominion War arc proves, I think, how utopian ideals fare in the face of that kind of context, in a war against an enemy like the Dominion
The Federation was compromised the first moment they allowed Section 31 to exist.
@ true, but that was clandestine. Was thinking more generally and publicly.
@@allnamesaretakenfulI think “allowed” is not quite the right word. It’s more like Section 31 has planted its agents in key positions in Starfleet and are shielded from scrutiny with denial that there even IS a Section 31.

How about blatant hypocrisy? The federation sponsors human genetic engineering off world.
Great one on Augments keep up the good work but I think its mostly Earth more than other Federation worlds
Khon and his group of Augments were genetically engineered before they were even born. And we're pretty much told by their caretakers what they were And why they were made and it went to their heads. Doctor Julian Bacher was genetically modified when he was 6 years old. And when he found out what was done to him, he went out of his way to make himself appear less capable purposely coming in second in his class at medical school as an example. There is an slight exception to the rule of the band on genetic recequencing. Serious birth defects: Curvature of the spine, brittle bone disease, and those others you mentioned are generically scrubbed and rendered things of the past by the later half of the 24 century. But total overhauling a person's body to make them smarter, faster, stronger, or give them abilities that are outside of the norm for their species is illegal. When I first heard about this topic I thought they meant only humans genetically enhanced Was illegal due to what Doctor Bashir said. Wasn't until Star Trek Discovery that Genetic engineering wise illegal throughout the UFP.
The ban on Gene mods is a Earth thing, other species can do Genetic Mods but it prevents them from joining Star Fleet, apparently us Earthers Screwed the Pooch so bad on that it forced it's way in to Star Fleet Regs and didn't get repealed when Star Fleet went from being part of the "United Earth Space Probe Agency" to the UFP, Gene Mods from other races can serve in other branches of UFP service but Human Gene Mods can't (without special dispensation)
Here's a basic question. How do we know the augments were bad leaders? Sure, millions died, but that was in war. Did the augments start these wars? Or did the normies start them? Maybe the Augments were smart and efficent and uplifted their lesser subjects better than the idiot normy rulers and that was the excuse for the normies to start a big war. Is there anything in the movies or tv shows that said the augments abused their people or started the war?
I'm pretty sure the DS9 episode specifically states that Gene Modification is allowed to be used to treat illness. There's a lot to be discussed about the ethics of gene modification, but your argument resting so heavily on the medical use case which was actually allowed is not particularly compelling.
If the technology existed today, there would be those who would see it as a godsend, something that could eliminate all the genetic abnormalities that plague us today. The problem comes in what someone would describe as an abnormality
I feel like this channel doesn’t have a good enough handle on the lore to make videos likes?
It was just constantly repeat itself
Bashier was born a regular human and later received gene therapy the augments were born with their ability
The inherent Problem of Gene Modification is the fact that as soon you start modifying human beings, you start to classify groups of humans as "inferior" beings. You decide if a life is worth living or not. Shure there are illneses in which an ethical case can be made. But where to draw the line? Which other forms of human life would be errased as soon as you start with this? I'm coming from a country that would've killed me as a child if I had been born 60 years earlier for being an inferior form of human life. In a society that errases people via Gene Modification: I might have never been born. And quite frankly I'm happy to be a alive and be who I am and since Star Trek is and allways should be a Metaphor for our existence: I disagree.
Genetic manipulation only goes so far. For instance think of all the different dog breeds and their specific abilities each breed is known for. No one thinks any higher or lesser of a dog due to its breed or genetics. Same for people. Another method to work around this bias would be to allow specific genetic modifications, in this case curing disease or adaptions to the body to survive in harsh climates, to all people.
@hackman669 Shure I'm just saying that this video started with talking about curing illnesses and than in the later half got into: But why shouldn't we limit our potential? I'm not against curing such thinks. I'm against the idea of creating humans as a product for specific tasks (which is what we do with dogs). I'm against the idea of predeterming the value for things before people can take decisions.
It’s an age old argument if you could alter someone’s DNA profile and eliminate some catastrophic disease, but what if you do it in such a way that it also makes them technically immortal, and it on mints them in such a way where they consider themselves not only genetically superior, but Become arrogant. And try to take over the world it’s like OK here’s a scenario for you. Someone has a debilitating disease that you know is going to cause them to have significant brain dysfunction. Let’s say like down syndrome and you have your ability to alter that, but in altering that you create someone news, 100 times more intelligent and more aggressive causes them to take over the world. You create the next Adolf Hitler or you create the next Joe Stalin, or you could create the next Einstein or the next Steven hawking but you won’t know until they mature and then by that time it’s too late why take the risk it’s like with artificial intelligence yes it can do great things potentially save lots of lives, but it could also grow to a point where it sees the real problem on this planet is not having anything else but humanity and wipes humanity out these scenarios until it actually happens and then it’s too late. Why not just leave this mess in theoretical and let’s not play games with things that we shouldn’t be playing with we shouldn’t be playing God because we have nor the intellect nor the humility and the common sense to do so, we are not ready to do this kind of thing and I don’t think we are going to be ready by the time we reach the 24th century I don’t think by the time we’re in the 26th century we will be ready to do this kind of thing Reason being human beings will always be human beings. We are nasty. prideful and vengeful until we figure out how to eliminate those things from the species I don’t think we should be playing with genetics at all
Betazed should have kept up their defenses, but they was too use to peace to give a damn.
I want to know did anyone in the Gamma quadrant managed to keep away from the dominion, as I doubt they could cover the whole quadrant.
The Federation capitol was supposed to be in Paris I think and San Fran is just the headquarters of StarFleet. And in reality global warming is a ruse the elites use in order to depopulate the planet and impoverish all western economies. There is NO global warming and the only real climate change is nothing more than weather and seasons.
I have been having thoughts on engineering augments of my own. They will be conservative.
