How to KNIT with a HOOK! 🎉 Knooking for Beginners 🎉 Left-handed Tutorial
In this tutorial, I'll show you how to knit with a hook, a knooking hook! It lets you create pieces that not only look knitted but that basically are knitted. It's a great technique for everyone who either can't knit or had to stop knitting. 🎉
Knooking used to be very famous over a decade ago. By using a crochet hook with a hole in the end you are able to recreate the exact same stitches that you would use for knitting. Attached to the knooking hook there's a helper yarn that keeps all your loops up as a replacement for the 2nd knitting needle.
It's super easy and fun. Suitable for everybody. It can be especially helpful for everyone who had to stop knitting due to hand or wrist pain. With knooking you will still be able to "knit" even though you are just using a crochet hook!
Try it out and see for yourself what you can do with just a hook! Happy knooking 😏❤️

You too can knit, Just try "continental knitting" , works just like crochet. youtube it.. As for knooking, it's basically Tunisian crochet, just get a long Tunisian hook.
Wow this is so ingenious!! I really hope you can show us how to do other stitches, especially cables.
So many new techniques, I love it!! Thank you for sharing! Will definitely be making one! ❤
I know, even I can hardly catch up with everything popping up these days 🤗 oh happy crocheting
I've had these types of hooks I have no idea how I got them and I didn't really care to look into them, I thought it's a needle+hook situation so not much interest from me. I got suggested this video and immediately pulled those hooks out and they are amazing! I thinks it's the easiest way to create cables I found so far, having so much fun playing around with them now. Tools went from ignored to 'this is magic'! Thank you for sharing this with the world! Fantastic tutorial!
Oh, that's so cool! A had mine stowed way for years before I thought about them in December. And here we are 🤣 have fun playing around with them. I think it's a super cool addition for both crochet and knitting
Fascinating. It’s like a variation of Tunisian crochet, but more. Very interesting. I’m a knitter and have no interest in learning this but it’s still so fascinating how such different tools and techniques produce the same fabric.
I agree! And I love finding new techniques and incorporating them in projects. Yarn crafts are the best 🎉
This is what I am waiting to learn ❤❤
Perfect, you're going to love it 🤗
Ty for this! I have the knook kit and loop crochet kit. I definitely am going to pull the kit out because I’m running out of knit mode lol I’m bored this seems much faster than knitting 🧶 ❤❤thanks so much I’m going to knook a rib stitch scarf!
That's great! I feel you, sometimes I'm in bored crochet mode. Then I usually switch to tunisian. And now I have another option 🎉 have fun knooking
@ Ty
I wonder, is it possible to work along in normal crochet, then bring in a knook and knit a section, then return to crochet? I'm all about the seamless transitions.
Hi, that is absolutely possible. The beginning and the end of knooking basically are crochet and can be seamlessly added. In the past, I combined both techniques in a few projects. Worked perfectly 👌
I've heard that fisherman used to knit. I've also heard they would crochet to pass the time at sea. This is definitely not just for women.
That's true. Historically, it was men crocheting . Only in the past century it shifter more towards a "women's craft"
Thanks for this! I crochet but have never been able to knit. Now I just need to get some of these needles. They are also used for Lumra work which is an old type of rug hooking here in Ireland.
Excellent! You can easily get them on Amazon, ebay or temu. Have fun trying it out 🤗
I still have the nook needles . But never got into it. Now I knit
Perfect, good for you 👍
But….. where to buy a knooking hook 😳 I want to learn this !!!
You can get them on Amazon, ebay or temu. Search for either "knooking" or just "knook". I hope you find some
So funny. I tried this about 10 years ago but I couldn’t get the hang of working around the yarn running through the stitches. I gave up and taught myself to knit!
Perfect 👌 after making knooking over 10 years ago I tried knitting too. Failed and got a lot of pain from it. Went back to crochet, and now adding knooking again, lol
Hi Thomas, thank you for this very clearly tutorial on knooking. I've seen more of these but yours is the best I've seen so far. I think I might give it a try again. Thanks a lot for your time and effort Greetings from The Netherlands
My pleasure 🤗 have fun trying it out. I think it's a really cool technique for people who can't knit or who like to switch it up
So cool!❤🙂👍🏻
Thank you 🤗
2 questions?- Is there a way to make a taller stitch? How do you finish the top edge to match the bottom edge?
Hi, what do you mean by taller stitch? In terms of size or taller than a regular knit or purl stitch? You can make the exact same stitches as you would make them for knitting. So when there are taller stitches you can knook them too. Finishing edges: when you started with a chain, then the regular slip stitch finish as shown in the video would fit best. If you start with an i-cord I'd finish with either single crochets or a half double crochet slip stitch. Hope this helps 🤗
Thank you! Amaaazing!❣
You're welcome 😊 glad you liked it
TO MUCH TALKINGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!! 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎 Stupid idea To many steps makes EXTRA work JUST KNIT !
Always feel free to just skip and let others enjoy it. Thanks and bye
Very interesting g nice
It is, I absolutely love it 🤗
So beautiful ❤, thanks
My pleasure 🤗
Please, we need a lesson to explain how to make a decrease or increase in this technical way
Hi, first of all, don't panic. There will be more videos showing both increases and decreases coming soon. As you might guess, recording, knooking, cutting and posting usually takes a bit of time to prepare. So if you really really can't wait, here are a few options: 1. Search in the comments for other entries about how to decrease and increase. I wrote it down how it works. Btw it works exactly the same like for knitting or even crochet 2. Use the search function at the top and type in "knook" and you'll get a few videos about how to do that 3. Patience. I'd recommend you to learn and get used to the technique in the flat as a simple rectangle first before incorporating increases and decreases. If you are already familiar with knooking then go back to options 1 and 2. Hope this helps?
شكرا جزيلا الرب يباركك 🌹🌹🌹
Great tutorial. Tried this a few years ago but needed a refresher course to start again. A lot in one tutorial so I'm ready to go now. Thanks. I'm excited to begin a hat 😊
Yaaay, I'm glad to hear that. A lit of us had a little experience with knooking in the past and forgot about it. So for me this is also a refresher, almost done with my first piece and all I can say is wow! Have fun 🎉
My mother got a new rose bush every year and eventually lined the fence rows of her house with flowers anyone could pick. Her birthday was coming, I was broke, and there were fist sized balls of yarn I did NOT want to granny. Then I found a pattern like this. I put the many colored roses on the darkest green I had access to and stitched a slightly smaller solid granny. She wrapped herself in roses every winter after that.
Oh my goodness such a beautiful beautiful story ❤️ thank you so much for sharing 🥀🌹 big hugs with little tears in my eyes ❤️
I bet you would love mosaic overlay crochet as well. I make double sided blankets with beautiful patterns with mosaic.
Mosaic is on my list of things I want to learn more. I only made it once for a cowl that ended up looking way to pretty to wear it 🙈🤣 it's a fun technique and I'm sure I'll dive into in the future
The carrie along wool is just like a needle .
Yes it is, it's a replacement
You can also use Interchangeable Tunisian Hooks with cable wires of different lengths. You just screw onto that Tunisian hook the length of cable wire you need for that project. You can also screw on a disc or square at the other end to prevent your work from unravelling when you need to take a break. It works and no snagging of any yarn used as tail. Good luck!
Yes you can. And if it works for you then it's perfect 👌 I tried it too and didn't like the feel of the cable and having to take it off and back on the other side. Thought it was too stiff for my feeling. But everyone their own. 🤗
Imteresting
It is! And fun 🎉
Thomas thank you for this detailed explanation and tutorial, you have given me inspiration to try this, I have only used the waistcoat stitch for baskets in the past .❤I’m looking forward to future projects matching mittens or fingerless gloves would be great !
Hi, I'm glad you like it. Have fun trying it, it's super fun and very easy with the color changes. In my next video I'll show also how to make this in the flat 😉🤗
I would love to see this done in the round
Hi, I'll show that in a future video. Works awesome 👌
Wow! That was incredible. I know how to crochet and Tunisian crochet. I would love to add this to my skills. What a cool concept.
It's a great addition, especially for all things ribbing and cuffs. So much easier and very pretty 🤗
I have a set of wooden crochet hooks that are cable capable, these should work for this shouldnt they?
This should work, too. I hope the cable isn't too stiff. Mine was too stiff and I couldn't knook as fluently. But give it a try of course 😉
The scissors are darn cute xD
I know, I love them! They are from hobbii in case you wanna get them for yourself 😉
You do beautiful work and I love the techniques you are teaching, beautiful and fantastic.
Thank you so much, that makes me happy 😊
❤❤❤
🤗😍🤗
How is this different than tunisian crochet? I bought one of these about 10 years ago, I knit and crochet.
The difference is that there is no return pass. You work from front and back if in the flat just like regular crochet. And the finished fabric is knitted. Hope this helps
I tried to learn to knit so many times without success. When Leisure Arts brought out the knook several years ago, I tried it. It still took a little bit, but after a few months, I gave needle knitting another try, and I was good to go!
That's awesome! Sometimes a little step in-between is really helpful 🤗
@@totally_fierce My knocks had disappeared into storage after a move, and they came back to me last week. I started thinking it would be a really good idea for me to make some scarves or other things where gauge isn’t critical with them now and again, because I hold onto a belief, correct or not, that changing up my knitting style will help keep my hands and wrists healthier. Sometimes continental, sometimes Portuguese, maybe sometimes knooking!
I knit, I crochet, tsunami crochet, circular machines now a new fun way to enjoy my craft.
Ha, I know, so many things to make and so many ways. That's why I love it 😍
This to me is just like Tunisian crochet
Not really, there's no return pass here 😉
This is fascinating. It is like an eccentric form of knitting. I think we'd describe the knit stitches as being worked "through the back loop". I've often wondered if knitting would be easier with one of the needles replaced by a crochet hook, especially in Continental knitting which certainly challenges my dexterity.
I love your saying "an eccentric form of knitting" 🎉 if I ever write a book about knooking, that would be the subtitle 😍 And I agree, for me knitting would be much more easier with a hook at the end. Maybe I should try knitting with 2vlong tunisian hooks? 🤣
I tried knooking for a bit and it was ok, but after learning to knit I simply couldn't think of any reason why I would choose knooking over knitting. The availability of sizes in knooking equipment is very limited compared to any other craft and in the end it is just knitting with extra steps. There was a short hype of knooking some years ago but I think that was because of one specific book that only addressed making hats and also not very delicate ones.
I know, when you know how to knit and have no issues knitting then this technique is not needed at all. But for everyone else who would love to make knitted fabrics but can't knit, this is a great way to do it 🤗
My knocking needles are on the way 😊
Yaaay 🎉 it feels like we are all going to have a biiiiiig knooking party 🥳
I've never heard of this... I struggle with knitting but can crochet so can't wait to try it out ❤
Have fun trying it out, knooking is super fun. And then you can knit without really knitting 🤣🎉 it's genius
Interesting! 1. I never knew those types of needles existed. 2. Never seen this type of knitting technique! Thank you for sharing. I learned something new. (you can teach an old dog new tricks, lol) =)
Ha, I learned new things daily and love it. That's the beauty of crafting. It's always evolving ✨️ have fun trying it out, it's super fun
@@totally_fierce So true! Thank you! <3
very interesting!!
I think so too! 🤗 fun technique
This is so cool!!! Thank you for sharing :)
You are so welcome! 🤗
Hi, Thomas. This is so crazy! I don't know when I'll get to this - before next winter. I see so many possibilities ~ thank you!
Thank you, the possibilities are endless! Also combining crochet with knooking. I will show more projects soon so there's plenty of time before next winter 😉
I bought the nook kit years ago and couldn't figure it out, I learn better by watching someone instead of reading. Now at 71, I can't knit anymore, hurts my shoulders. God bless you for sharing how to do this!!! Just amazing, thank you so very much!!!!!
Glad I could help! And now you can knit again with less shoulder tension 🎉 it's amazing to see how this technique helps others 🤗 happy knooking
PS, you did a great job!
Thanks a lot 🤗
If you do a plain stitch at the beginning and end of each purl row the edge won't curl so much.
Thanks for the tip! Will definitely incorporate that 🤗
Can you do knooking in the round?
Yes you can, works perfectly! I'll show it in an upcoming video 🤗
