Oh, I see. It’s like watching a JPEG file load incrementally. Great video.
Awesome videos. They are so informative and helpful! I can't wait to try to apply these tips to my own paintings!
This is my second or maybe 3rd time watching this video. I love watching your process. Would you consider sharing your palette for this painting? Especially your choices in mixing greens? Thank you!
Love each of your paintings, your ability to see, to tell the story, vibrant colors. I'm so glad I found your channel!
When painting oil paintings, mixing colors becomes tiresome and anxious as time goes by. That always leads to failure. Do you have any know-how to overcome it?
If you don't mix paint on the palette then you will have to on the canvas. That is one thing to try. The only other thing is to build up your will power. If you are painting for fun I would say start painting digitally.
Beautiful work, so painterly! And you shared some lovely memories too! Thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for the kind words Karen! Happy painting
How do you know where to put everything and which colours to use 😩
Lots of experience, but if you work with a double primary palette you should be able to get most colors you see.
Boníssimo.
Thank you
I just bought equipment to build myself a pochade set up, it’s super simple. I’ve never plein air painted OR oil painted to this’ll be interesting
That is awesome! Happy painting and enjoy the process. It takes time with plein air
I don't recall seeing a video so replete with such gems before. Thank you for sharing this.
Glad you enjoyed it Dennis, you're welcome. Happy painting!
What’s so helpful about finding you is that you’re giving SUPER SPECIFIC info that guides and encourages. Thanks so much! Great painting and vid!
Thanks, I'm trying to share what has helped me. Happy painting out there!
I’m going to listen to this excellent video over and over. You said some really great stuff. Thank you! What a beautiful painting you made, too. Glad to have found your channel!
Thanks you! hope it helps you on your journey!
Amazing!
Thanks!
Hi Roy, good job! The finished painting is wonderful, and I really liked your story about the barn and your family💖
Thank you Cora! I'm happy to get to be a part of the farm
Hi Roy, I've just found your channel and subscribed. All thumbs up for this nice painting and your explanations which are very helpful. I'll dive into your playlist and watch what I can find. Funny thing, I also make up stories when painting. Kind regards from Germany👍💖
Thanks Cora! I find it helpful to tell the stories and I'm glad others do too. Hope all is well over on your side of the world!
Eu gostaria que o vídeo não fosse acelerado, pois falar não é tão bom quanto mostrar😢
Thank you, I have some other videos that show more of the process and are slower
I am a Boswell too, just in Sydney Australia.
Awesome, do you trace the name back to Scottland? Happy painting!
Beautiful! Your not so nice camera seems to show more saturation which I was missing, especially in the grasses. Very enjoyable to watch
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it!
DREAMY wonderful music inspirational creative art work & thanks for sharing your heart!
Thank you Jane, that is a kind thing to hear!
Excellent painting 🎨🎨🎨🎨🎨🎨

You're welcome, have fun out there!
Thanks for the advice.
You're welcome Dyana!
Great tips, music is distracting.
Thank you Elizabeth!
Good video and information, could be a little longer. Greetings from Iceland
Thanks for watching! First from Iceland!
C'est magnifique ! J'adore !❤
Thank you Gerard!
Amazing, Thanks 👏🏻👍🏻👌🏻‼️🪻🌷🪻
You're welcome!🙌 Happy Painting
You are a great teacher. You are positive and you offer just the right amount of information. The tip of watching your brush holds is brilliant ❤thanks keep posting!
Thank you Robin, that makes me feel great. Take care and happy painting!
Beautiful work Roy. I did pick up a few good points for sure. I'm struggling with a snow forest scene as well. I enjoyed watching the process.
Thanks Mike, glad it was helpful. Hope it gets you closer to where you want to go with the painting. Have a good one!
Can you confirm the colors used? Cad yellow lemon Yellow ochre Cad red light Not sure which red this is Ultramarine blue Titanium white THANK you!! :)
Yes, correct on all those. The other red is a Quinacradone Red. I will go back and forth between that and Alizarin depending on how deep the darks need to go.
Thar turned out so nice. Full of sunshine!
Thank you! Happy painting
Not quite sure what reds you had on your palette. Was the yellow lemon or cad yellow lite. Beautiful work.
Hey Jay, it was a Cad Lemon, Yellow Ochre, Cad red Light, Quinacridone red, ultramarine. (i use the Quinacridone when I don't need super dark colors) Thanks man!
You organized a very complex scene into a simple value structure that you maintained throughout. First time I’ve seen you use the knife also. Well done Roy!
Thanks Steve, hope all is well man!
Thank ya
You're welcome
Beautiful painting! The distance is amazing, it looks as if you could walk right into the woods.
Thank you very much Sue, that makes me feel great!
Thanks for watching and happy painting out there!
Painting with the lighting from the front usually looks so flat. Cast shadows on the rolling hills made all the difference. 👏👏👏
Yeah, if I'm doing front lighting, looking for cast shadows is a first priority. Have a good one!
Excellent! I enjoyed watching you paint this, and it’s beautifully done!
Thank you Christine! Hope all is well.
Thanks for the well-informed narration Roy. You produced a beautiful fresh painting in very 'flat' light. Bravo!
You're welcome Nick, and thank you! Hope the info is useful for you.
My, that's one lustily luxuriant, happy lurid tree! LmMFaO!!! ;) :P :o)
That is certainly one way to put it! haha
Interested in the palette you are using as it would be easily transportable. I understand why you leave the paint in it but when the wells are full is it hard to clean? Just thinking about using mine for oils.. I’m new to oils so just getting used to all the cleaning.. LOVE the painting..❤
Hi Robyn, I'm not using that palette anymore. That one is a Masterson palette 16"x12". If you get some glass and a glass scraper it is easy to keep down if you stay on top of it. The only problem is, if you are rough on it, your going to break the glass. I shattered the glass about three times before giving up on it and going to a wood folding palette. If you are careful it isn't a problem. Every once in a while if you toss it down thinking it is soft grass and there happens to be a rock, you will be having a rough go at painting that day. Then you will be cleaning glass shards for about 20 minutes when you get back to the studio. Thank you! Happy painting!
Could you please turn on Turkish subtitle?
I'd be happy to bu I'm not sure how that is done, do you know how that works?
Thanks Roy. Nice work. Very informative.
You're welcome Mike, thanks for the kind words.
Great timing.....this helps with a painting I am currently working on. You have a wonderful way as an art instructor. Thanks!!
Glad it was helpful Sue, and thank you!
Great video. I appreciate seeing you doing a warm background and cool foreground. .In Florida it seems I always have cool background, but now I’m thinking I need to experiment with that effect and see what happens. Thanks again for the hard work that goes into these videos. You have good content and it helps.
Yeah try it out, it is easiest to get something like that around sunrise or sunset. Although there are certainly circumstances when you have cloudy or hazy days where you can find it as well. I appreciate the kind words Dan, glad the videos are helping!
Beautiful work Roy!
Thanks Aaron, hope all is well man!
If you are having difficulty with your block ins I hope this helps! Happy painting out there.
1:14 Was this part painted without using heavy oil? I'd like to know if you use Medium in general.
That is from using Galkyd and a little paint thinner. I've been adding a tiny bit of stand oil into the mix lately. Good luck with your work!
love the video keep it up :) makes me want to tackle a gray day plein air session
Thanks Bradlee, Go for it man, good luck out there!
Excellent! Don't stop. I will watch more!!
Thanks Roslyn, a new one on layering oil paint will be out tomorrow morning!
A very helpful video and really enjoyable. I really appreciate you using appropriate text when needed, rather than chatting all the way through as so many do, which is distracting. With your video, it is possible to watch and learn from the process of developing the work itself. Of course, I am sure it would be good to see and hear you, but I think that would be lesson with a slightly different emphasis (both are useful, however). Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! I'm doing both styles, whichever one works best for the painting. Thanks for watching.
