Q&A Is it easy to change the filter? The manufacturer says it has a 4000 hour life, even if you cut that in half, it's probably still a lifetime of use for just mycology work for most people (remember you don't leave this thing on and running all the time). But yes if you had to replace it, it should be very easy to do so, the silicone sealant is like rubber cement, you can just pull the old filter off and scrape away the leftover sealant and put the new one in. Likewise the tote lid will still come off pretty easily if you pull on it hard enough. The whole replacement can be done in about 15 minutes.
Can or should I add a pre-filter? You could add a pre-filter if you want, you could do something simple like stretch a cotton t-shirt over the fan intake and secure with rubber bands or zip ties. Or you could use the carbon filter that comes with the HEPA filter. Its up to you. The HEPA filter is supposed to be good for 4000 hours, if only used for mycology work, that could be a lifetime for many people. But as noted above, the HEPA filter is not hard to replace if needed, it's basically a 10 minute job, can pull it off and scrape away any remaining silicone sealant, then put the new one on.
I noticed some air coming OUT of the fan area, is that normal? First please make sure that you installed the fan in the correct direction because if you did it backwards the flow box won't work at all. But that said, yes, It's actually normal and expected for air to be flowing both in and out of the fan like that, this means the pressure has reached an equilibrium which is exactly what you are looking for, nice even pressure inside the box producing laminar flow out the front.
Can I install the fan in the back pointed directly at the filter? No, you don't want the fan pointing directly at the filter, this would cause uneven air pressure on the filter, you want it on the side and you will just allow it to build up equilibrium pressure inside the box (I probably should have explained that in the vid).
Is it an improvement to add a top and/or sides to the front part of the flow box? No, sides and tops are counterproductive, they create a vacuum and unfiltered air must then be sucked in to fill the vacuum, creating turbulence (the opposite of what you are looking for). You don't want sides or tops but its even worse if you direct the output into a still air box which for some reason many people seem to want to do (this completely defeats the purpose of a laminar flow box, you will have nothing but turbulent air).
Can I use the 6" or 4" version of that fan instead? The 6" model will work, the 4" will not. The HEPA filter requires around 200CFM but a little more is preferred, keep in mind that as the filter ages, it slowly clogs, requiring more and more CFM over time to produce the same flow rate.
Does the design really produce laminar flow? I've seen some critics saying the design doesn't produce laminar flow, but they are wrong. The design does in fact produce laminar flow when properly tuned, you can see this visually with a proper flame test (as shown in my vid at 18:53) and you can also see it with a smoke test, even though I didn't do an intentional smoke test in the vid, there IS actually an accidental one, if you blink you could miss it, but it happens at 25:48 as I'm sterilizing a scalpel that is smoking from the induction coil. As you will see, absolutely beautiful laminar flow! Compare this to other videos of smoke tests on laminar flow boxes. Most of the critics disappeared after hundreds (if not thousands) of people built these with absolutely fantastic results, there is no question that the design works well, many have called it a "game changer" for them. I think its funny that initially there were skeptics despite the fact that I show the design works by using an expensive laser particle counter, flame test, open agar plate test, and a complete start to finish grow with it. Producing laminar flow is not as hard as many once believed. But you do need a legit HEPA filter and capable variable speed fan.

This was so good. I’m going to do it!
I was skeptical on his particle count until he did the test. That's an interesting way to prove your point.
I've been using a box fan with MERV 13 HVAC filters taped to it for years with a contamination rate that is very close to zero. No problem and the lighter test looks laminar but even if it ain't perfectly laminar flow, it seems to matter very little.
any link for the tool sterylizer?
I cant find the vendor for filter
how do you prevent the backflow of the pressurized air through the vent back out?
I need your help
I looked up the filers locally in Central Europe and unfortunatelly I only found bad reviews concerning how long they last and their sparse availability. My plan is to rip up a goretex military jacket and make myself 1 x 1 m washing-machine resistant filter out of it.
I was told that h202 or peroxide works better than 70 percent iso
Oven tek 4 life bby!
Which version do you use? Do you actually get down inside it or do you crack the door up so air blows up and use a rack on top the stove? I’m using a sab and doing well with nocs, but have yet to attempt any agar or g2gs at this point. I have read a lot of polarizing views on this one but I am curious and I do have one of those uv-c’s on hand which I occasionally use
@@rufussthubbins8891 I think cracked with the rack is the way to go.
what was the dry yield on those containers?
Do you ever have to change the filter? As once it is sealed in there looks like you can’t get it out🤷♀️
Pour yellow liquid into a clear dish and get a white lid👀😂 im lost just gotta do it myself i guess
So agar is a liquid mixture, but when it's in a petri dish you can tip it over and it stays on the roof with the spores👀 can you help me understand
Built this. Mine looks really horrible because I suck at applying silicone. Still 100% effective. Did the same 5 minute agar test and it was clean. Agar work is SO easy with s hood instead of an SAB.
How much do you get off this ?
would it make sense to put some kind of cloth pre-filter on the fan's inlet?
Some people have done this, I think it might be useful to catch bigger particles before they clog up the HEPA filter.
Hey Gordo, I was inquiring if the water that you're misting the cakes with did you happen to use tap or distilled or what pH balance would you recommend the water to be ? And would a cap full of hydrogen peroxide hurt ?
Tap water is fine, neutral pH. A small amount of H2O2 will not hurt and may be helpful, studies have shown that H2O2 inhibits spore germination, which means it could prevent some contam spores from germinating and since your mycelium have already colonized, it would not need spore germination at that point.
Thank you, Gordo. I’ve watched hundreds of TH-cam videos on mushroom cultivation. This is definitely in the top 5. I might feel differently after I try this technique (lol), but I’m definitely inspired! I’ve had great results using Midwest Organics grain jars, but I’ve never made cakes before. This kit looks very promising, and you’ve explained the process so well - - with bonus spore print instructions, as well! Your generosity is so refreshing and greatly appreciated. 🍄🟫 💕
See my patreon site which is totally free (I do not use pay walls) for more content you might enjoy (the stuff TH-cam won't let me post).
Hi, I have that same HEPA filter but I have a 4" extractor and it runs around 350 CFM. Does it work?
Yes, it will be fine.
@@gordotek thank you very much for your answer. I saw some air particle counter from AliBaba, extremely cheap like 89u$d or something like that, they measure from 0.3 to 2.5 microns, do you think will work to check if the air velocity is working or with the flame should be ok? Good video, man, super on point and with all those tests it should dissipate any doubts about it working.
Made one based off of this but with different filter/tote.(80qt sterilite with gasket, and 20" x 11" filter), working great so far. Test vids on my channel if interested
Nice, gasket totes cost more but make it a little easier to seal up since no silicone is required for the top.
vielen dank
I belive you to be within 10 years of my age. I see you have a narrow quadrangle indicating you are not easily forthcoming. I see mars has a strong influence in you but also you show Luna this combination is rare to my practice but beneficial to the holder. I see that by blessings be, you are in the middle world able to dream and take action
Blessings, dreaming, and action are correct. Also an INTP.
So you use positive instead of negative pressure for air?
Correct
Definitely. Almost all contamination in any given room (not to mention tons of spores) are on the floor, so you want to keep your fans away from floors, and you don't want to be sucking fresh air in from the floor either even if your fan were to be at the top of the tent and blowing out (negative pressure) this would suck in air from the floor which isn't good.
This is sweet
One way to increase your success in a still-air-box without a laminar flow hood, is to have a strong UV-C light inside to clean the entirety of the box, including the air itself, before starting. I pour agar plates inside the SAB and leave them without a lid on, so I don’t get condensation while they are setting. I have the light on while they are setting, for about 20 to 30 minutes, and then put the lid on and seal the Petri dishes when they are cold and set. I’ve never had a contaminated plate doing it this way. You have to leave the room while the light is on, though, because it will damage your eyes.
UVC can damage the spores you want to grow too, so be careful how its applied, but yes it can be an effective way to reduce contams.
@@gordotek That’s true. 😊 I don’t expose spores and mycelium to the light. I haven’t tried to test how resilient they are to it, but I will at some point try it out, out of simple curiosity. I actually read an interesting research paper about forcing mutations in spores through different time intervals of UVC exposure. They were able to mutate the spores quite successfully.
It doesn't apply to this design, but another way to make reasonable laminar flow is to run air from a fan through a bunch of small tubes. I saw this done nicely with boxes of drinking straws
I've seen various ideas about "controlling the flow" (plenums, etc) but I don't think any of this is necessary or helpful. I would want to see an A/B comparison with smoke test and particle counts.
You could also use a heat gun or a lighter or candle to smooth out the edges.
Micro scopy work?
Yes
They are close to 10 bucks, but a deburring tool is great for the plastic side crap if you are willing to increase your BOM :)
May I love you. Thank you friend!
Yes 😇
Thanks for the plans I'll be building it soon. I was thinking if you turn the output of the fan towards the side or back of the box it would create a more even air pressure within the box which should create a larger sweet spot coming out of the filter. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
I doubt it would make much difference which direction the fan is pointed, the pressure should be constant once it builds up, the only problem I could see is pointing it at the filter which would not be a good idea.
When i trip i like to take an mp3 player with wired earbuds. that way when my earbuds fall out on accident while deep into music I recognize im still in the corporeal realm.
You don't want batteries running out in the middle of the experience either.
There is a special rotary tool head specifically for plastic. Works MUCH better than the standard disk.
what does it look like? Are you talking about one that is like a straight drill bit type?
the fungi world loves sterilite totes
👏🏻
This is still possible for less than 100 to build. Just finished mine
Yea, also every time there is an amazon special day (prime day, cyber monday) I've also seen significant discounts.
Interesting that 1 micron is sufficient. The professional ones use 0.2 micron which are expensive.
Yep, you are just trying to keep contam spores out of your work.
If I use two filters side to side, would that effectively work as a bigger filter? I'm unsure if the area in the between them both would be "safe" to work in. Great video btw, really well explained.
It works (this design is even shown at the end of my vid) but you would not want to work in the middle, you would work in the center parts of each filter. I don't think it adds a huge amount of value.
Does anybody know the dimensions of the filter and the frame? I'm machining an acrylic box and Id like to know them before receiving the filter.
So you can never replace the filter?
The manufacturer says it has a 4000 hour life, even if you cut that in half, it's probably still a lifetime of use for just mycology work for most people (remember you don't leave this thing on and running all the time). But yes if you had to replace it, it should be very easy to do so, the silicone sealant is like rubber cement, you can just pull the old filter off and scrape away the leftover sealant and put the new one in. Likewise the tote lid will still come off pretty easily if you pull on it hard enough. The whole replacement can be done in about 15 minutes.
Next time maybe notch fan hole and have cord exit there ✨

I am not a bot❤ thanx
That sounds like something a bot would say 😂
Its slow to start but well worth it!!!
Lets get to it. Obviously you don't know what that means.
Maybe I should create an express version that just shows the build at 2x speed? 😂 but you can also do that yourself pretty easily with the nice controls TH-cam provides 👊🏻😎
Whats wit the efn intro if you know why were here!!!!!
I did put timestamps on the vid 😇
Hi I am sold you are spot on thank you. One question. Would it be ok to have filter cetntered in tote or would the dead spce below have a negative effect?
Probably OK to center it but I think more secure (less likely to detach) if its resting on the bottom, probably easier to seal too.
Hi Gordotek, should we also use the carbon filter behind the HEPA filter?
I didn't use mine, might be useful as a prefilter and will also remove odors, but its not really needed, your choice.
@@gordotek OK, thanks so much. Really enjoy watching your videos. Well done.
