Episode 130 Hanging With Barry Danielian
My guest for this episode is Barry Danielian.
Barry is deep. A skilled performer, producer, and arranger, Barry has toured and recorded with some of the top names in the music industry. His tenures with both Blood, Sweat, and Tears and Tower of Power put him in elite status among trumpet players, and his decade-long position with Bruce Springsteen and The E-Street Band has brought his trumpet playing front and center to sold-out arenas around the world. Plus, his lifelong pursuit of the martial arts has given him deep insights to complement his kick-ass skills on and off the horn.
Check out what Barry has to say about the conversation with Bruce Springsteen that changed his life, the challenge of managing your energy, dealing with high stress situations, learning to adjust to the situation, the power of music and it's impact on people, music as a tool for transformation, ego, work ethic, the connection between Chinese Medicine and the trumpet, the rudiments of trumpet playing, his recovery regimen, the power of small things, consistency, the need to adjust to the situation, and so much more!

Buying albums late 70,s and into the 80,s Jerrys name kept appearing and his section which made the music better!
The horns on The Dude album are so cool! I bought the sacd edition the day Q passed on !
Jerry Hey is awesome and the guys on so many great tunes! Jarreau ,Thriller ,Rosanna , all the EW&F stuff top notch section!
I appreciate how candid and willing he was to share things that a lot of people would be reluctant to share about their personal lives. It demonstrates character and the desire to help others to survive a similar situation that they might be in, or help them to avoid getting into such situations.
Petor Bond is fraud and scamer he is asked money to send gift and never send a gift
My upper range came with a serious case of chapped lips from playing in marching band. I went from a G above high C to a double C and D with power and control. My band directer went nuts. He loved it and so did I...
Great interview Lynn. You have always been one of my favorite lead players. This is Bruce hehl BTW
'Chasing Reality' is still on my best albums ever list. I've learned from this interview and enjoyed the discussion.
I have lots of great memories of Barry at Winnacunnet High School when I played piano in the jazz bands and he always was musically advanced and sharing musical wisdom. We were both way into jazz.
What a great interview with Roger Ingram ! I thoroughly enjoyed it !! What an amazing career Roger has had playing lead trumpet and going out on the road with Tom Jones when he was only 18 years old !
Hey big fan of this podcast, do you have any plans to continue? It's been a year and I miss it!
One needs to mention his work with George Duke.
Thank you, dear Bobby. You are the best. 🙏🙏🙏
Spent abit of time with Bobby at our jazz school in the day also playing with him total legend and great guy
Check out "A New Approach to Altissimo Trumpet Playing" by John H. Lynch It's from the 1980's but I think it's still in publication and it helped me reach a double C and beyond. I love it because he's a physicist that worked for NASA and was also a trumpet player looking to play high notes. It's mostly text about the embouchure and some about the equipment, there's also some exercises in the high range. I'm 61 and still playing lead above the doubles. It worked for me.
Fearless learning is real learning.
Awesome! Thank you!
This is great, thank you so much for posting!
What a great conversation. My trade (at its best) works as discussed. My partners daughter is a product of amongst other things Wells. That school seems to turn out some very capable musicians. Was interesting to hear thoughts on problem solving players developments
Do I recognize you from RWA?!
Inhalation and exhalation
100% spot on Jon ! great video.
Jose, I miss your podcasts. Are you planningto return?
What book is he talking about?
Awesome and articulate gentleman.
Austin is very underrated. I like his style and personality. Great interview as usual!
Great humble player! Loved the interview.
Now you have me obsessing about being obsessive. Can you tell that I'm a retired trumpet player? We all spend time on TH-cam hoping to find out why it is we can't play very well. While all the people who can play very well are trying to tell those of us who can't how to do it. It's like trying to teach a fish to type. I took all my old horns to a shop to have them made into lamps, but they refused me.
💙Harry is so wise!!🥰👏🥰👏🥰
💙I love Harry Kim! I learned about him because he was playing with Phil Collins. Traci Baker from #getphilvotedin did a huge, fascinating interview with Harry (Part 1 & 2)!! I absolutely loooved it!!! Harry played for/with so many greats!!😲🥰👏 Not only did Harry play with the Phenix Horns but he also formed The Vine Street Horns. And the INCREDIBLE work he did with Phil Collins Big Band, OUTSTANDING!!! But as Harry would say.. "fahgedaboudit"!! Pfff!! 😉👍😂 Harry is the BEST!!!🎺🥰👏🎺🥰👏🎺 Here is HARRY KIM Part 1 th-cam.com/video/MGwfWseNMdA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sZSDUhbFP5O5tBmL HARRY KIM PART 2 th-cam.com/video/r-tF7hZDTGU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Vyvc-3UArvRbi3iS
This guy is so useless it's unreal, he is a garbage player and a garbage snake oil salesman... Why does he get so much attention? "Fibers can't move so they can't develop?" that sentence means utterly nothing physiologically, but it sure sounds nice, doesn't it?
The Stevens-Costello is utter garbage that has ruined thousands of players over the years. Roy Stevens was a con artist who used to take a broken player, make them play with an upstream embouchure and pinch and squeeze until the faintest hint of a double C came out, then used that to sucker them into paying him a lot of money for lessons for years and years.
Some excellent wisdom here, Gentlemen. I’m experiencing a raspy double buzz (two different tones) starting in the middle of the staff and going higher. And it seems to be hampering my higher register. Anyone have a thought about that? I will be grateful for any direction or suggestions.
Bingo.
just by trying this exercise with the mouthpiece I went higher on the mouthpiece than I ever did and suddenly felt mussles I wasnt being able to feel before. Honestly It sounded to me as a joke at first. I have to try that tomorrow on the trumpet. Thank you!
TERRY BRAVO!😇
Unfortunately Doug McVey has been extremely unpleasant to do business with and I cannot recommend his services
Great picture of Jake on the wall behind him!
Had a lesson with Andy about 5-6 years ago and really appreciate stumbling across this now. So much of what y'all are talking about resonates with what my routine is right now. Thanks for sharing this great talk.
He speaks like Boy George. Just saying. :)
Chris just passed. A sad, sad day. He was a great player and an even better person. I’ve known him since we were teenagers. RIP.
Great interview with Jeff!! Joe Triscari
Interview tip of the week.. just ask the leading questions and shut up. Thanks Lynn for you concise answers to these and uhh uuh uhh you you you or or or questions.
I used to listen to Brad Goode at the Green Mill in Chicago in the 90's. He was WICKED good. Dude was tearin' up in those days. He's only gotten better since then. Glad to hear his wisdom in this interview.
Barry was my #1 junior high school bully back in the day, but he seems nicer now. Internet rabbit hole!
Hopefully we are all different at 61 yrs old than we were at 12yrs old. Apologies if I was a bully. Not sure who you are, but sorry regardless. 😊
Greetings brudda. Recently gifted a trumpet by my grandfather. Been on extreme recon for all things trumpet since and have really enjoyed your content with some of these brass titans. Hopefully the series isn’t over I would love to see you bring on Terumasa Hino if possible. I will say learning this thing from scratch at 31 is unique to say the least. It’s been quite a while since I was horrible at something, not to mention my teeth are shifted in the front which I’ve found means I’m learning at a deficit but I won’t let it stop me. Thanks for the great content peace and blessings✌🏾
This interview in particular deserves a lot more viewership. Tom Malone is one of the big three gods of modern brass arranging in a commercial setting. You have Jerry Hey and I’m sure there’s somebody else…
Walsh is a god ❤️ Thanks for this!
Bobby is the best .
