Just found your channel and shocked to hear Dan is gone. I had a few lessons with him in the early 90s and what a wonderfully soul. A great teacher and player. What a loss.
I'll never forget meeting Dan....I grew up in Florida but I happened to have moved the year before to Colorado....I had to fly back to Florida and take an engineering exam in Orlando...Dan happened to be playing and giving a masterclass at University of Central Florida (UCF) which he had relationship with....I could talk about the concert and you all can imagine what it was...the cup mute...that soul...BUT what struck me was Dan taking time to talk with me after the concert...he found out I was a trumpet player and where I lived and immediately asked me about "the scene" out in Denver....Dan knew all the cats in Denver he tipped me to Brad Goode and others... He really talked with me and had a conversation there was no rush to get around me or let me deal with this guy real quick...He was encouraging to me and who I should go listen to as I was just starting to try and learn this beautiful art form.....Dan was so absolutely kind, personable and generous with his talent, his knowledge and his soul.....I will miss Dan...prayers to all of you his family and personal friends who knew him much better than I...God grant you peace and comfort in these times...
José, this means the world to me and to so many others. I’m so grateful for you to have asked me to be a part of this. Shedding a few tears hearing some of my heroes talk about his life. I miss him more and more everyday. Thanks so much man, it truly means so much
I saw Dan live playing with the Maynard Ferguson band. What a cool guy. Looked like he had fun whatever he was doing and what a fantastic trumpet player.
