Jean-Michel Molkhou's review:
" […] Master and student, fusion as rarely, demonstrated a subtle balance of voices often melted into one. With a humble posture and a symmetrical economy of means, their fine lyricism and discreet pathos (La Nuit,… l'Amour) inhabited an intense and seductive dialogue, nevertheless capable of darkness until the funeral (Les Larmes) , using everywhere a delicate palette of shades. Before the final peal of bells and its haunting ostinato (Easter)where the two performers released all their energy. Muted and never flashy energy, which we found from the Introduction of the Second Suite. [..]
An exceptional osmosis
[…] Once again Babayan and Trifonov, as worthy heirs of the illustrious elder whom they honored, demonstrated an exceptional osmosis, an unaffected sensuality and a dazzling digital and poetic mastery, concluding the whole thing with a transcription of the adagio from his second symphony."
pianiste.fr/daniil-trifonov-sergei-babayan/
Thomas Deschamps' review:
"The monographic recital given by Danill Trifonov and his former teacher Sergei Babayan reveals a darker Rachmaninov than usual. Opposing in sound but united in a very mastered conception, the duo plays with a virtuosity which leaves nothing to chance and is never gratuitous.
[…] the duettists really seem to speak the same language, that of the youngest. […]
They particularly highlight the incessant harmonic changes like so many grazing lights on a dark matter. The effect is striking, and we completely forget the original piece in front of this brilliant recreation.
In a generous encore, the duo offers a transcription (presumably in Babayan's hand) of a large extract from the Adagio of Symphony No. 2 : a more consensually melodic Rachmaninoff."

Vincent Guillemin's review:
"[...] the stools reversed, the two artists can return for Suite no. 2 opus 17, this time with the young Russian on piano I, an undisputed master by the naturalness of the fingering. A true dance suite, this score prepares perfectly for the last piece and fascinates with the dynamic created from the Introduction, Alla Marcia. The even more dynamic Waltz once again shows the impeccable rhythmic agreement of the two artists, relatively used to playing together, even if their own sound differs. Very concentrated, they follow each other and intermingle like a couple of dancers, then also voluble in the Romance then in the Tarantella.
[...] a perfect agreement in their dynamic and harmonic changes, calmed in the middle by a pensive Tempo I. The following twenty minutes involve the same movements, always slightly distanced from a work that can be presented with more passion and darkness, but always as superbly mastered and tuned."

My eternal question: Can Russian performers even feel the special spirit of Bach's music? Given their Russian socialization, must Bach's particular evangelical or Protestant expressions remain alien to them? Any answer?

Does anyone remember the first time they heard the music of Bach. For me it was a life-changing moment. A day after which love of music was total. I grew up on Stravinsky, Beethoven, Mozart about age four when discovering my parents’ record collection and integrated turntable, common in the late 1950s. These were all hidden away in a hall closet none of us kids used and, so childlike, I assumed it was my secret. I remember the smell of the clothes, the near darkness, the dark green paper centers with shiny silver writing of mysterious names - Igor, Amadeus, Ludvig. Were these people? Did they know Burl Ives? I had older sisters in school, their reading and writing a direct challenge giving me a very early skill. The even more mysterious titles - Rites of Spring, Concerto, Opus which I found in the dictionary - thanks, sisters. It was a whole new language describing what would come to be my life. Especially meaningful to me was Rites Of Spring with its seemingly endless introduction, its violent harmonies and polyrhythms. That was my spot, my secret room, and so when I grew older Stravinsky was not strange at all. But Bach; now this was special. It is slightly odd that a Bach piano concerto was the real avant-garde of my small collection. So pretty yet powerful, inscrutable, a formula I could not crack. It would be some three years before I began to learn to play Beethoven and Bach on piano and finally understood the strangeness that had mesmerized me.

I appreciated the seamless transition, in the first movement, coming out of the cadenza, in exact sync between orchestra and piano. The second movement was uniquely sublime, in this pianist's softer than usual dynamic, and uniquely expressive development after the opening of this movement. Throughout the faster and louder sections of the outer movements, Mr. Trifanov maintains a stoically expressive and vulnerable persona. Seamless, expressive, and elegant.
