Hey folks, here's another demo of the Mears Lab Destroyer Amp, at a high gain setting. The gain can still get a bit higher from here. Most of the drive in this demo is coming from the two 12AX7 preamp tubes. During the wah lead break I kick on an OCD pedal for a bit more. The volume is only at 3 so there's not much power section overdrive. Gain 8 Volume 3 Bass 6 Treble 4 For effects I'm plugged...

Hey folks, here's a loose jam of the Big Wreck song Blown Wide Open, demonstrating the mid volume sound of my new Destroyer amp. The settings are: Gain 4 Volume 3 Bass 7 Treble 5 I'm also using some delay and a bit of wah and maybe some octave effect too. All gain comes from the amp. Miced with a 57 and no post eqing or anything, just the dry sound of the amp. Thanks for listening! #guitar #diy...

New Mears Lab "Destroyer" Guitar Amp Clean to Dirty Test

Hey folks, here's my first test of my newest amp which is nearly complete, it's called the "destroyer". It's basically a modified clone of a Fender Deluxe 5D3 with an extra preamp tube, which gives the amp way more gain if desired. I'd still like to tweak the gain staging a bit more to optimize the volume, gain and noise but I'm excited for where it's at already. The overall sound is inspired b...

    Great video. If someone wanted to build this amp. How would the correct transformers for the power input and for the speaker. What is the ohms for the primary input of the speaker transformer. Interesting that the high voltage from the output going to the heater of the 5y3gt doesn't burn out the 5 volt winding of the output transformer. I know some stuff about electronics, but more then some beginners do. Do you have any information or numbers as to what transformers would work for this amp Thanks for your time.

    Tell me how much to pay you, to build me one just like it, but that has a lot of gain, to push the input into pretty strong distortion. I mean, really pile it on hard, with a 12AX7 in, and in/cranked....that way I have lots of variation in sound character across various makes of 12AX, AU, AT's..... Edit: Oh, and tell me how to pay you. I'm trying to get exactly what you just built, to experiment with my 12AX, 12AU, 12AT collection, RIGHT HOW!!!! My new studio REALLY NEEDS what you just built! 😁

      Thank You for your comment, yes that's a great idea and I've already got come plans for a preamp similar to what you have in mind! On my channel there are some clips of a "destroyer" amp I made which is an early prototype of the preamp circuit. When I first started building I wanted to focus on simple designs with as few tubes as possible, but lately I've bee experimenting with adding more tubes with more gain stages throughout the circuit giving the user more "over drive range". The ability to drive different parts of the circuit. IE: before or after the EQ stage. Layers of overdrive. If you are interested we could discuss it further, I can be contacted by email to tpmears@gmail.com Thank You!

    I have built a number of audio devices, including tube preamps based on Paia Electronics kits. Those were starved tube designs, so this preamp was interesting because it uses higher voltage. Did you design this preamp to generate tube distortion within the preamp, to overdrive a tube amp, or perhaps some of both? I might attempt building a preamp like this if I am confident that I can avoid the dangers of high voltage. Thanks for doing this video.

    • @mearslab
      @mearslab 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Tim, I appreciate your comment. There's a soft spot in my heart for Paia, years ago I restored a giant modular synth from them and reading your comment brought back those memories. You are right to be concerned about high voltage, the nice thing about this circuit is although there is about 350v in the b+ section, the tube only ever see about 150 volts(approx) and you don't have to worry about the power section. Still dangerous but a bit less daunting I found. The distortion generated can come either from the tube, or by driving the front of whatever amp it is plugged into so theoretically it could be used to bring out more overdrive from whatever amp it is plugged into, as long as the amp has a tube preamp too. Thanks and good luck with your projects!

    Wow! Thanks for the shout out! FYI - When looking at power transformer specs, if you see VCT, that means "Voltage; Center Tapped". So, in that first example you show (the 290WX @ 28:33), the filament is already center tapped. You do not need to create your own. Whenever you see V by itself, it isn't center tapped. Whenever you see VCT, it is center tapped. Also, at 30:28 when you go to Hammond's website, you're actually only looking at a very small list of their transformers in the 200-series. Their website is very convoluted in that regard. They make many thousands of transformers, with hundreds of them suitable for tube amps, and there is no single comprehensive list of all of them. You have to look in multiple places, under multiple categories to find all the different ones that might work. Here's a secret... If you're building off of a popular existing schematic, like a Champ/5F1, it's much easier to just use their "Guitar Amp Replacement Transformers" page to find them. It is linked in the header of all of our transformer category pages visible at 26:19. Or, you can find it on Hammond's website by going "Transformers > Classic Transformers > Guitar Amp Replacement Transformers". There, they list the dedicated guitar amp transformers by amp brand and model name. So, you can just look up Fender, Marshall, etc, find the model of the amp, and they list recommendations for that model. For example, you're building a Champ. They have a page dedicated to the Champ. Sadly, again, they do not list all possible transformers that would work, just the ones they specifically design for those amps. If you really dig through all of their transformer sections, you'll find many others with specs that will work. But those 290/291/1750/1760-series ones are designed specifically as replacements/upgrades for those classic guitar amp circuits. Keep up the awesome work! Can't wait to see how the amp turns out!

      Hey hey great to see your comment, and the extra info. Lots of useful tips in there. The 290WX I have is an older model before they added a center tap, which I didn’t realize until after I posted the video 🙃. I’m glad you pointed it out, it could be misleading, thank you. In particular, learning that Hammond makes more transformers that are hidden in the website makes me so excited. It’s annoying when you can find one with for example a plate load close but not quite what you’re looking for. I’m pretty sure I ordered a pair of 1750PA’s not too long ago from you and they are sweet. Initially I was planning on a stereo PP 6v6 build for guitar but wasn’t patient enough and ended up making separate amps instead 😂 I’m looking at the 1750B now instead of the 1750PA for the stereo amp project, I think that 15-20w range in a stereo combo would be the cats meow. hoping to place an order soon! Thank You

    Ive been building pedals, guitar, amps (tube and solid state) and restoring vintage radios/receivers (when i get the chance) for years. My last project was a Fender Champ type amp with solid state rectification and optional output tubes. I used a cathode lift switch to select either the stock 6V6 or and EL84 for the output. Each of the power tubes pins are basically in parallel except the cathodes whicn go to a ground lift switch and each tube has its own grid resistor. I got the idea from the Mesa Blue Angel line of amps. I had to work out how to do it on my own from a few similar schematics but none were available for a Champ circuit. The EL84 needs less input signal so its quite a bit louder all other thing being equal compared to the 6V6 especially when the negitive feedback loop is bypassed, it also brakes up quicker than the 6V6. Both tubes work great in that circuit. Its also got a handful more mods. Anyways point was that this would be a great project for anyone wanting to build their first tube circuit. The power section is where things get a bit more dicey but by building a preamp first you learn about biasing and bypass caps etc. This would also be a great project for someone who wants tube tone without the cost of having to buy expensive power tubes about once a year. You could pair this preamp with a solid state power amp and an eq pedal and youd be set. Or ecen better you could add a FMV tone stack to the preamp (or banxandall if you want more shapeability). Building your own equipment is incredibly satisfying and i cant recommend it enough. Now that you got me thinking about it i just might build a vavlestate amp next. My Marahalls powertubes are starting to go again and thats another $140 for a new quad (which needs replacing every year to year and a half) so having a valvestate would give me the benefits of my solid state amps while having a warmer more pleasing tube preamp response. And if i did my daily practice with that amp i could seriously extend the life of my powertube in my all tube amps.

    • @mearslab
      @mearslab 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nope, solder isn't needed for a good electrical connection, but it does help to keep it safer by preventing the wires from pulling apart and possibly shorting. As long as the connection is tight, safe and secure the old twist and tape is okay. Thanks for watching! A great resource for heat shrink is Ebay for "cost effective" and I go to Princess Auto(Harbour Freight) for better quality.
