The AI Inevitability MYTH
What the phrases "AI Inevitability," "adapt or die", and "the genie is out of the bottle" are really used for, and how they TRY to take the power away from us to decide the course of technological growth.

    Everything you said was absolutely true, a lot of the ways in which AI is trained (stealing user data) and the way it is implemented (populating search engine result pages with inaccurate answers for example), are not things that the end user even wants and as you so poignantly pointed out in the video, it's up to us as a collective to find solidarity and communicate that instead of accepting the status quo. This video was both uplifting and informative at the same time

    I can't disagree with your argumentation but there's a deny of reality : most of people doesn't cares about artists and art, simply because school and medias doesn't teach to them why art is so important. They don't get why it makes their life better for the everyday. Instead of the security of cars which is tangible in their everyday use. This is the sad reality. So nobody will fight for saving art from AI.

    • @LeonTsao

      I think we can turn this into an opportunity to teach about the value of art. China went thru the Cultural Revolution which erased a lot of traditional arts (both of East and West) but afterwards people saw the value and it comes back in full force.

      @@LeonTsao you're making a good point. I thought about this also but maybe not with the same road. I think we can't stop AI for years, but the handcraft will be more valuable after those few years (well, let's say I'm an optimistic). I another hand a lot of so called artist that whine today took benefit of capitalism by making very poor image to make a living of it. And I think somehow we're all responsible of what happen. Artists should always be radical and refuse poor jobs in an ideal world. Of course we all need to eat but I think it's a good moment to think about our own practice (well in my case it is a very interesting moment for art because I do art and I'm also teaching so I get money from teaching when my art doesn't goes well. I'm sad for others that doesn't have the chance to get 2 "jobs")

    I don't disagree with anything you're saying. But I feel like I can't compete with them. I want to make some AI. You could make AI too if you wanted. A ton of money is being put into this not only by these companies but also by the government. They have some regulations already. It's not stopping anything. But if people only see it as a chatbot or a robot with a chatbot built into it and that's all AI apparently is which it's not. Well I basically use ChatGPT for a few things once in a while. Only use the image generators once in a while. Nothing I couldn't live without. But you have people talking about autonomous weapon systems, uploading people's minds into the cloud, you have elon taking out monkeys and putting chips in peoples heads, you have people all over trying to get ai to do programming tasks and hacking, you have ai voice cloning, ai can play video games, you can clone a persons appearance, anyone can do this and i can assure you there are some not so good people out there. I kind of assume everyone using it has some sort of ulterior motive. it might not be everyone but alot of people probably do. maybe they are they are trying to create utopia whatever that means. they could also be going the other direction with it. i might to if i was to make my own. but it amazes me how passive everyone is about it even if they think things like it will take their job and other things. like being ignorant solves problems. i appreciate your optimism. but idk if i'm so optimistic as a whole ai is kind of overwhelming.

    • @LeonTsao
      @LeonTsao 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it’s amazing how passive people are. I have a cautious optimism. With advocacy, people can start to see the issues, plus there can be push back once the downsides become more frequent. Things often go one direction, then public opinion changes, like a pendulum swing.

  • @itzhexen0

    Even though some of these AI people say some completely ins4ne things and idk how they get away with that either. I think AI may be needed to help fix society. Whether in a good way or bad way. Idk if I trust the people making it. AI can be alot of things and is alot of things. Before chatgpt showed up I didn't see AI as being a chatbot at all. It's just been popular for a long time and is kind of synonymous with it. People say alot of things about AI. It would be nice to atleast have a list of things about AI and it's capabilities that are currently facts and if people don't agree they are facts then they can argue about these facts and try to dispute them.

    • @LeonTsao
      @LeonTsao 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it’s mainly AI in the wrong hands. There can be good that comes out of AI but that requires us completely restructuring its implementation. A rational approach that uses its benefits and limits and is cautious around its dangers.

  • @itzhexen0

    Do you know how they got all this data in the first place for the AI to consume. Everyone gave it to them. Now think about how smart that was. I wouldn't expect a whole lot out of society. Random people in society have already created all this social media and decided to sell everyone out and get everyone to tell everyone how to do their job to the whole planet in the name entertainment and money. The AI isn't the problem. Well it is a problem. But not as much of a problem at the moment as society has been for a very long time.

  • @itzhexen0
    @itzhexen0 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I kind of agree with you. I disagree that anyone is going to do anything about it. Just like they don't do anything about anything else. Good luck with that. Also these things all use neural networks and google has given this information to the whole world. It's not just these companies. There are plenty of channels telling everyone on the whole planet how this "AI" works. Google is the one who created the problem by doing that. But everyone knows that this kind of works and so it will never go away. The only way I could think of to get rid of it is for people to completely stop using the internet and I doubt that is ever going to happen.

I want to design a study for the prevalence of challenging ADHD symptoms in music students compared to other less creative fields (or something like this) - and thus maybe what supports should/could be in place at these universities. I would love to make this a longitudinal (is that the correct way to use this) study as well.

    What we have today is not really AI but a huge databasing and indexing system. Yanis Varoufakis, the former Greek finance minister mentioned a hopeful AI sci fi story. They develop truly self aware AI and to defend itself if decides to remove the current leadership and upper classes because they are the biggest threat to it's own life and those of humans and animals. Then, it lives along side humanity in peace. Also, AI is great at replacing bullshit jobs like executives, politicians, economists, and show jobs like we saw with the countless "experts" that lied to us during covid (and have been for decades). AI as it is today cannot replace the real jobs that actually do things. Heck, they can't even get neuralink working and they're failing in mapping out brains to "bootstrap" consciousness for AI.😅😅😅

    • @LeonTsao
      @LeonTsao 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for sharing your perspective. Some say we are nearing the end of the "S curve" in AI development. At the same time, my critique is not AI but how it is being rolled out with a lot of hype, which DOES do damage. Even as a big indexing system it is easily misused as a form of identity theft and misinformation, and the danger lies in AI companies overhyping the tech. A lot of people are being laid off due to the hype. And creative jobs in particular people enjoy--a lot of artists are losing 80% commission due to AI. And they can be relegated to the position of "correcting AI images" which is boring and uncreative. I don't believe in turning a blind eye and only see the positive. I think there is more negative to the roll out of AI right now, until we make a big shift in direction in AI.

      Tesla had been pretty reckless in trying to skirt human safety, testing dysfunctional cars on the road-one out of control car going past a stroller. A lot of AI companies have a similar lack of concern for human safety or societal stability. We should ensure a stable foundation to build AI off of, not just recklessly test AI without basic guardrails in place.

  • @RickeyBowers

    Respectfully, I think you are wrong. You speak of the wave and ignore the ocean of research in play - solving most the problems you mention. Furthermore, these companies are engineering an architecture which will work with any sort of AI backend - the human culture will adapt similarly, btw. It will be different than we know, but failure isn't something to fear - we grow out of failure.

      Thank you for the respectful convo. I believe in the future of AI and of the ocean. This first wave I just believe will be done in such a reckless way that will be destabilizing of society. It won’t take AGI either, just the way the existing tech is rolled out. A sustainable way will lead to the ocean, a healthy one with a good ecosystem, not a polluted and sick one it is potentially headed.

  • @fredkelly6953

    Yeah it's the new wild west of tech for sure but companies are stuck between getting their product out asap or being left behind. Yes you can be sensible and make sure you are producing a quality product but by the time you get it to market it would have been good 3 years ago. It's happening how it always happens and it will stay the wild west until an equilibrium is found but that's not a bad thing. The start is a chaotic time but it is charged with so much energy driving innovation that breakthroughs are made very quickly. Once things level out so does innovation so this time is necessary, messy with massive rises and falls but that's the human way. I think the very first ai will be shaking it's virtual head when considering how humanity does thing.

    • @LeonTsao
      @LeonTsao 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the respectful convo. My friend tells me “the long road is the short road in disguise”. Yes, it makes sense the companies taking charge of the wave now may be getting their tech out fast, more so than others. But problems will exist for them down the road. It’s like someone trying to run a 10K race when they just have practice for 1K. The person who works up to it steadily will run 10K well without hurting themselves. These AI companies doing the 10K recklessly will find themselves running fast but getting badly hurt, which will be hard to recovery from. Especially if society starts to hate what they do.

      Define "nature." Are plastic bottles nature floating in the water nature? Is human cloning nature? We can make tech and AI in line with human nature and also wellbeing, and we can make tech and AI that is not. Do we bear responsibility in reducing the negative effects (like pollution) of tech or is it just all just an off shoot of human nature and determinism? If tech is developed in a way that does not seem sustainable, maybe something can be done about it? Not against AI, just how it is being developed now. Or maybe I just made this video because I had no free will in making it :)

    Building AI isn't like building a bridge. There is no clear path to an intelligent system, so a "pause" or slowdown wouldn't yield anything useful. Right now its an exploratory phase where we learn what works and what doesn't. The AI we'll end up with will have been grown rather than been designed but that's the nature of the beast. Secondly, re: "cheating". Its also cheating to use a calculator. Before calculators, people had to do hard maths but calculators freed us from that and everyone uses them all the time. Why should AI be any different.

      Before calculators people used books that had tables of values for trigonometric and logarithmic functions and slide rules.

      @@john14x42 I'm old enough to have used log tables myself! But I certainly dont miss them or feel like what I do is somehow lessened by not using them to get to an end goal.

      I think the issue has to do with using people in society as guinea pigs to run an exploration, when in a usual scientific experiment exploration done on humans is done with plenty of safeguards in place. I think AI can be used to learn. A calculator can be used to learn or simply get away with passive learning. It seems anecdotally in the school system much more students are using AI in a passive manner and to get away with things rather than an active one, and it’s hard to control for. I am interested in how AI can be used in education, but the way it’s rolled out such that the education system has to immediately adjust I don’t agree with. Education has standards, like tests, teachers requiring degrees…so how is it that none of this is required of the AI entering the system?

      @LeonTsao When confronted with ideas, people use their own intuition to assess them. A lot of people are rubbish at it, they have less than average intelligence, and IMO, this should be the heart of education. To think critically and logically. The internet has given us access to information so we can make decisions on better and broader information, but AI can give us access to logic and reasoning, and this can help everyone. Also, AI will just be better than people for a lot of really important tasks like medical diagnosis. I don't think fear of what might happen is a good reason to stop AI.

      @@medhursttGood point, and I'm not in disagreement. The purpose of the video is a critique of how it is rolled out now. Regardless, there will be good AI somewhere whether it is overall rolled out poorly or not. I think it will be better if it is done sustainably and ethically.
