    Your amazing at this! Im interested in parralax mapping but idk if i can pull it off, for me just ironing out event glitches is a struggle sometimes lol... id like to ask as someone with very little experience (less than 2 years with rpg maker, only used gimp once) do u think i could learn it on my own with tutorials / experimentation within a reasonable amount of time like a month or two? also just curious do you happen to be for hire or are you too focused on your own projects?

    • @starlitcastle

      It really depends on how quickly you pick up new software and workflows. And on how easily you give up on trying to learn a new skill. You can get pretty good results in a short amount of time, there are a lot of good tutorials on this. If you feel comfortable mapping in rpgm I'd recommend getting something like orange mapshot to export your maps from RPGM so you can just edit/paint them over in something like gimp, krita, procreate or CSP (or if you have PS). For some people that workflow is easier, than starting from 0 in an image editor. I'd say just give it a try with one map and see if you think you can get into it. The workflow gets faster once you are comfortable with the process. And I'm currently not available for hire.

    Also, a great idea is to not design your levels like mazes or labyrinths. Rather, make them a collection of rooms. Use the Nes/Snes Zelda dungeon design policy: 1. Design backwards from the POI/Objective to the entry, then add side paths with lesser POIs/Death ends. 2. Mix paths with topography to highlight said POIs/side paths. 3. Organic and architectural layouts, by themselves, can create a better maze than an actual one; especially when combined with the above two design guidelines. 4. Time how long it takes to go from Entrance to Objective with and without passing through all the side paths/POIs. Combine these four points with what Starlit said in the video, and your levels will not only be smoother, but even gain personality and avoid that "generic" feel.

    • @starlitcastle
      @starlitcastle หลายเดือนก่อน

      depends on your game resolution and the map size you want. For MV/MZ it should be a multiple of 48 and at least as big as you game resolution... for example if your game res is 1280x720, the map would be at least 1296x720. Usually I go for an estimate like I want a 20x30 tile big map and turn that into the canvas size... 20x48 and 30x48 etc.

    • @starlitcastle
      @starlitcastle หลายเดือนก่อน

      The option in engine saves the maps in a smaller resolution, not 1:1. You'd need to use a plugin that saves the map in original size. For MV there's organge mapshots which does that, not sure if it works in MZ. But yes, a lot of people do it that way.

    • @starlitcastle
      @starlitcastle 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can exchance parallax layers, there's a plugin command for that. So based on your clock system you could switch out the needed layers :) If you don't mind the extra work that would be needed to create a night version of every map. Also, the doodads plugins (yanfly or visustella) can be helpful for extra light sources. Just create the light as a sprite and use a switch to determine if it's shown or not. The only problem with all of that is, that at some point of the day all the maps will pretty visibly update to the night/day version. (and updating large scale maps might cause a flicker... all of that could be hidden behind a screen fade though, something like "dawn of the 3rd day" ;) )

    • @StarlightBettaGamer
      @StarlightBettaGamer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@starlitcastle Yeah, I have no idea where to start with the plug in commands to make the image only appear based on a variable. and with the sheer amount of maps ( including forest levels and indoor/outdoor ) there's not a chance i could do a day and night version, not to mention the day night system i have tints the screen manually, and i'm honestly not sure how to adjust it without completely messing it up and then not knowing how to put it back haha. adding a layer on top that isn't affected by the tint is the only way i can do what i need but so far, the tint affects all parallaxes that i've tried so it doesn't really seem to work in my case.

      RPG Maker is known for ease of use and being quite limited. If you're a "traditional" game dev and know how to code, there's really no reason to be using RPG Maker.

    • @CardinalDXMP
      @CardinalDXMP หลายเดือนก่อน

      As another game dev this was my thought too, though I'm fairly sure RPG Maker devs could *potentially* get decent results with a tile-based light/shadow layers system, if that doesn't exist already. Like, allow the mapper to paint solid colors of light per-tile (or maybe even per quarter-tile), kinda like just drawing big solid pixels, and the rendering engine smooths it out for them. RPG Maker (from my admittedly limited understanding) was designed to render maps as individual tiles, so manually copying tile art and saving maps as merged renders is kind of cursed to me, and I feel like RPG Maker devs shouldn't need to be going through such work.
