A huge collected blue spruce you would have a hard time bringing this one down off a mountain.
This video is part one of what I hope will be a series of videos about this tree. I saved it from being destroyed when it was removed from a landscape. I believe it can become a really impressive tree with some ambitious work. Wish us luck.

nice video. What size pot is that? I have a Dwarf Wisteria which is a little bit bigger than that one. Love those plants.
You, sir, are a genius!🎉
These ERC can be tricky, I don’t think all of them are ideal for bonsai. I just found a beautiful specimen near where I live in the Midwest (Illinois). Once in a while they have very nice tight clusters, usually longer wirey looking foliage.
Explanations make sense! I have 3 swamp oak seedling I grew from acorns. I've just fiddled with them. They're 2 years old. I braided them together this year. I'm wondering if they are bonsai worthy?
At last after many many years trying to find a video that actually shows how to deadhead this plant correctly. I've suffered through not knowing how to do this by the plant not producing many blooms and stunting plant growth as incorrect deadheading will stunt the growth at that section. Because of this the plant has hardly put on any new growth over the years but has flowered sparingly. Now I know exactly how to deadhead correctly this plant should now take off as it does have amazing blooms albeit not many. Thank you once again for this wonderful informative video.
Nice work. They make such good looking old trees but young, not so much.
Read that you shouldn't cut back all of the new growth on ERCs. That sounds very limiting but it doesn't seem like it stopped you from giving that tree a good hack. Any thoughts on the matter? Thanks! Did you do any pre-training at all on that tree the last 4 years or just let it run wild?
So do you have any follow-up? How did this heal? I have a white pine with an ugly graft that I'm thinking of doing this to and would really appreciate your feedback
Ive got a ton of seedlings in my yard. Set the mower blades high due to roots so the cedars survived a handful of years of cutting. Somehow they are bushier than anything ive achieved on the ones i dug up and styled on purpose. Cant figure the things out. No rhyme or reason to whythey bud back where they do
I was told not to clip off the lead top, but you did it. Please explain. Thanks.
Mother/Daughter
Glad to see yours has a similar shape to the one I’m going to be training as a broom style
Only broom style azalea on TH-cam
Great to see American Elms!!!
Great video. Why not in a blender?
Thats it!
No more clipping
I eas eondering there for awhile but turned out better
When I was at school my mother would say don’t mumble into your beard which is what you are doing in this video 😎Dennis
Bel video , peccato che non ci sono i sottotitoli.
Love clump style, I have a few of my own. Great video. All the best from the UK 🇬🇧
What did you use for soil upon collection? I have a specimen i want to collect and I'm getting mixed advise for soil.
Maybe in the future air layer/ground layer where the wire bite at the bottom is. Great start to a clump! Clump style has quickly become my favorite style. I’m late to the party…….. how is it developing??
Did you buy that? I've never seen a mini Wisteria.
They are out there alot of people call them a Hime Fuji Dwarf Wisteria. I have 2 of them.
master hudson, long time no see :( wanna do a short little update video? like a quick walkaround? hope you and your trees are doin fine
I'm not clear what time of year this was.
Interesting method. I've been absolutely obsessed with moss lately and have recently come across new methods with yours being one that I must try considering my failures. Thanks for this information.
🤘
Very good tip for helping the azalea by removing the spent blooms. 😊
Thanks for video! Any follow up on this tree?
Not yet. I started a new job last year and I have not been able to find time for recording. Maybe next year.
Can't understand why I haven't found your channel before Vincent. What a superb specamin of the Mugo species, really well done.
Thank you very much Mike.
Super cool. My girlfriends dad is an electrician and saves his extra wire to sell at the end of each year. I'm going to buy it off him and maybe try build a forge to save some money! Thanks so much. One quick piece of advice, a lapel microphone would improve the quality of your videos dramatically. I almost didn't stick around because I couldn't hear you at the start. You can get one that plugs into a phone and you can connect to your shirt.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the advice. Good luck on your annealing.
did you make an update video for this?
Yes there is a short update video.
Can I turn off the music?
My apologies but there is no music.
Can't hear instructions with the music.
What music are you hearing?
I have just got myself my first azaliea and I needed some tips on deadheading. Thank you a lot!
You are welcome it is simple but important.
What's your experience with steel pots, can the rust have negative impact on roots and health of the tree?
My own personal experience is admittedly limited. Cast iron and steel pots of all types have been used for as long as the materials have been available. As far as I can gather, there are no significant effects positive or negative. Time and more widespread use in bonsai will tell the full story, I think.
You made such an elegant and beautiful silhouette.
Thank you very much.
Tilt so longest branch is lower and go for slanted informal.
Thank you for the advice, Anne.
Hey, from around the Albany area here and getting very into the interest of bonsai, your redcedar video is just what I was looking for. How big was the tree when you first found it? Or was it a cutting like mine is planning to be? I'd love to see the work you've put into your craft at some point.
Hi Christopher that tree was a bit larger than it is today when it was first collected. I find these red cedars a bit challenging to work with but they are a native species and can be quite beutiful. Later this spring or summer if you would like to come have a look around the garden I would be happy to arrange it. Thanks
Wow. I have Chinese red pine 30.person
As a bonsai? In a pot? In the ground? What are you doing with yours?
Subbed to help you out.... good work God bless.
Thank you it is appreciated.
Very nice and wonderful tree. Love the American elm. I have four I have collected from my woods on my property, that I am currently working on. I also love the hemlock trees we have here in N.H., and also have some white pine. Thank You for this wonderful video presentation my friend!
Thank you very much. I also have a fair number of white pines as they are very easy to find in my area. I have only one hemlock I am a big fan of them they are just hard to come by in my area.
I planted some p. tabuliformis seeds and they came out much darker green than yours which is brighter, hopefully they turn out to be true.
I bought mine at an arboretum plant sale so I am pretty sure they are what they were labled as. I don't think they were in perfect health though. When this years needles come out maybe they will be darker. Where did you get your seeds?
@@beardedbonsai i ordered them from a seller called treeseedman
@SaffronCity I checked out his site it looks pretty lagit but who knows. If the tree his collector collected the seeds from was identified correctly you should be good. In like 10 15 years you should be able to know for sure. I think I might order some seads from him myself. Oriental hornbeam for one.
And I picked up ‘Kobe’ today that also has a bad graft that I will try to improve
Thanks bro I’ve been looking for this , I bought 2 last year a ‘blue Lou n burkes bonsai the Burke died on me so I’ve been just trying to keep my Lou alive but it’s thriving not as big as yours tho I’m definitely going to try your method
You're welcome. I hope it helps.
Vincent, can I ask how long had the seedlings been together as a clump when you shot the video please?
Of course Mike. They were wired together for about 1 year. They were about 1 year old when they were first wired together. I hope that answers your question. Thanks
Thanks Vincent. That's really good going for twelve months, well done.
@Mike Swain Thanks it is working quite well it has a diameter of between 1.5 and 2 inches already.
Hope you make a video when the time comes to put the elm into a bonsai pot. It looks very promising.
Thank you. I plan to maybe in 2024. Thanks for watching.
Closer camera for detail work please.
Keep those clippings for a wonderful tea😋
Tea. I have never tried that.
This species often grows as multi trunk when left to its own devices. That's why it's traditionally grown in Chinese style gardens (it originates from China). It has beautiful silver peeling bark more similar to an Australian Eucalyptus trees than pines! Only really showing in branches over 10 years old. I'm currently trying 20 saplings - some for bonsai, some for niwaki - we will see how they turn out ;-)
Thanks for sharing and good luck with yours.
