Restored Hydrostream over 90mph
มุมมอง 17K2 ปีที่แล้ว
1978 Hydrostream Viking, bone stock 1998 Mercury 2.5L 225 ProMax, Quicksilver 30ET prop, 4" Atlas jack plate, running the prop shaft CL about 7/8" above the pad. There's a 50lbs Lead Wake bag in the port "wing" to help it run level over 90. Out for a nice Monday afternoon in the dog days of summer. The green algae is coming in heavy in my lake this time of year. But I can still get out and make...
My background and picking up the next project Hydrostream Vector

I decided to include a short into to the channel before going to pick up Hydrostream Vector project. It's a 1981 and the definition of rotten. I really should’ve gotten more video of the work getting it out from behind the garage and getting it ready for the drive home. I dropped the ball and won’t do it agin. Prop Testing Hydrostream Viking with Mercury ProMax

Testing more props to find what the boat really likes. My best run so far has been with a 28 Lightning ET at 91, which was in my last video. Ran a 30 Hoss at 82. It ran best 1.5" below the pad but still had 21% slip. Next was a 29 SRX with a best of 90. It was 1/2" above the pad and 10% slip. Last was a 28 Mazco RE, the only prop I actually own from this video haha. Best of 86, and it wanted to...

Followed that with a 28 Lightning ET for a best of 91mph and 6% slip. The boat loved the ET and handled like a dream with that prop. Boy does that bring back memories I had a 17 ft Viper that was candy apple red with very modified 140 Merc on it with think 26 or 28 inch cleaver back in the mid-70s it would do about 75 but it was a b****to plane and threw a bigger rooster tail but when you got up on it it sounded like you was squeezing a Gorillaz balls ! I don't think I ever got the trim the right height it was named "Richie's Toy" out of Sheepshead bay Brooklyn I almost destroyed it when I went through a wave, shattered the windshield and wrapped the frame of the windshield around the steering wheel another time almost blew it over once when I jumped a wake scared the s*** out of me then I decided the ocean was too rough of place for that boat. So then I took it up to Greenwood lake yeah it was a lot of fun still miss it after almost 50 years! Boy does time fly by!😢

    Im about to attempt to restore an old nitro bass boat and want to flake it. Still gotta find a gelcoat to use. Just curious, it looked like you hand sanded it all after the final clear coat? Would using an orbital be fine?

    • @TNels
      @TNels 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I used a block so that the finished product would have a super flat finish. You could use and orbital or a DA and it will sand out smooth and buff to a shine, but it won’t be very flat, it will end up kinda wavy. I can assure you that the original finish on this boat was no where near as flat as it is now after being block sanded. There’s a few spots where I just used a DA and that looks close to the factory finish.

    Sorry… again… no information. At all. Nobody knows what engine is on it. Or why there are blue tubes going to it. Or what any of that wiring for 15 minutes was about, or all of the seat base building… nobody had any idea what the hell was happening. Couldn’t see that you were applying registration stickers, had no idea what the plaque was on the dash, or what you spent the next five minutes installing on the right side. Did you install your steering wheel with caulk? Lube? No idea. Why did you look confused when tightening the wheel on? Were you setting torque? No one would know that. People who aren’t on our level of experience won’t gain anything from it, and people who are, are just watching you do what we’ve already done numerous times… yes, you’re doing a good job. But nobody understands why, unless they’ve already mastered it…

  • @stephenwex5218
    @stephenwex5218 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hate to be “that guy”… but, this video offered almost zero information to anyone who hasn’t already done everything you did. There is no explanation as to why this hull needs to be perfectly square and flat at the pad to avoid injury or death at speed, the lingo is all things you would have picked up with a lot of fiberglass experience, so the majority of the captions mean nothing to the common person. No one understands what steps you’re taking or why. As far as anyone is concerned, you installed a floor and covered it with some random white substance, but didn’t seal the hull underneath with it…? You put up chopped strand numbers like everyone knows what that means, and give no advice or guidance on mixing or applying. And then you’re mixing flake into some unknown substance, spraying it on, and then go right into sanding. There’s no clear on there without flake? You’re sanding flake that’s laying on the top coat? I don’t think so… that wouldn’t go well. I guess I’m just a little confused by the comments. Yes, I love these boats, yes I understand why it’s important to build them the right way so you don’t die, but if I were new to the boat restoration world, I would have learned nothing valuable, and likely assumed things that were extremely incorrect. I think the end result is very respectable, but I would seriously consider going back and doing a monologue over the video explaining anything that’s happening and why, and how.

    • @TNels
      @TNels 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Video description clearly states this was my first attempt at fiberglass work, so I’m not an authority to tell people how to do it while I’m learning. Never called it a “how to” video/series. Sorry it didn’t meet your expectations, thanks for watching.

I'm kinda new at these type boats, and I'm trying to learn a lot about them, what little bit I have learned I got from talking to people but I don't think they really knew how to set one up, I watched a bunch of TH-cam videos but they didn't really get into how to really set one up..... Or maybe I was looking in the wrong place, maybe you could give me some advice because it seems like you have your boat pretty much together and you know how it works.... I like your boat and how fast it goes I just would like to have a passenger or two to enjoy the ride, but maybe you can't do that... With these type boats... But thank you so much well answering me back about my comment, you sure have a really nice boat......

      @@michaelgreene2920 I spent about a summer testing different set ups. Engine height, engine set back, prop selection, and weight balance are all things to work on. Screamandfly.com has sone great info in the forums for set up advice. Just have to do some digging and reading. This is a small boat, there are four seats and you can bring three friends, but that would be tight and surely wouldn't be running in the 80's. But you and one friend would be fine. Time in the seat is a big part of driving these things fast.

    I had a 1978 Viking back in the day. Had a 175 Black Max. I had so much fun on that boat. I will have another Hydrostream before I die.

      That is exactly what this boat is! I ran the original 175 Black Max for half a season before swapping the ProMax on it.

    The glory days of 2 stroke outboard dominance from Mercury Marine. The sound from those 2.4L and 2.5L motors, especially in dual installations on the Talon tunnel hulls back in the day hitting 120mph + at 7500-8000rpm can never be duplicated, the hair on back of your neck stood straight up. There's a few youtube posts of boats doing exactly that and you all need to check them out, youll see for yourselves what i mean.
