I've had to re-upload this video a couple times. Somehow, the final video has the colors messed up. The color in this video isn't the best.
An overview of a small vintage sled race in Eastern, OR
มุมมอง 2412 ปีที่แล้ว
Some great folks created a venue for getting these old sleds on the track. This was the first time these folks held an event. I suspect there would have been more racers but there was another, bigger race a few hours away. It was a good time.

Polaris Indy Trail versus Five Yamaha Phazers in a snow oval race.

A "Classic" snow oval race. Sumpter, OR Feb 2021. Usually, Independent Front Suspension (IFS) sleds from the 1980's are considered Classics. The leaf spring sleds are usually considered "Vintage". Lots of gray area there.

That seat looks pristine 😍 all of our older sleds seats have definitely taken a beating 😅😂
It's not perfect for sure! But it is a nice survivor. I need to make a better video of it on a nice sunny day. The colors would be better.
Everyone sell it let me know. I had a 97 and a 98. Dammit I wish I would’ve kept them.
I plan on keeping it for a long time...😊
My dad bought me an “89 bravo for my 6th birthday. Still have it to this day. Looking at “85 bravo for my daughter right now.
Always tighten your bolts kids😁
IMO these were some of the most attractive sleds ever made - LOVE them……..!!!!!!
My favorite is the '83 Sportfire!
Great review!!
Thanks!
I've been researching diesel heaters for my snowmobile trailer. This is by far the best installation on TH-cam. Would you consider selling the enclosure?
Thanks. I can put you in contact with the guy I had make it. He made it from my design and specs. Maybe you can find a local shop to do it?
@@oldsledstv2532 Thank you, I would appreciate that. Did you create a video that shows how you mounted it to the trailer?
@@billbrinias I don't think so. I used stout L brackets bolted directly to the frame, also a couple screws into the wall stud through the box. I used stainless hardware. Do you have a local shop that can make this?
@@oldsledstv2532I am in Illinois. I can probably find a shop in the area.
@@billbrinias LOL, I grew up there. Shoot me a text... it'd be easier to send pix and stuff. Four-tree-fife-ate-niner-O-O-too-tree-ate. I spelled the number so the bots wouldn't understand (maybe that's an old wives tail).
Weight difference?
Not much, if any.
Did your dealer help you with the cost?
Nope....
Probably done by an apprentice tech that wasn’t being properly supervised. I wouldn’t paint all dealership mechanics with the same brush. I’ve worked with some outstanding ones
I agree to a point. The master mechanic should have been supervising. There's a nearby Yamaha dealership that has an awesome "old timer" that definitely knows his stuff. I think my point of the video is to highlight the fact that with these old sleds, don't assume your local dealership will be able to help.
I think there was about a 30hp difference between them!!😮
When I got my '96 in June of '96, it had been a factory racer, the guy claimed it had been dynoed at 85hp. Maybe he was puffing, but I'd say they were around 80 for sure considering the '86 Indy 400 trail sled was around 60. I think the '98's were around 100. The '98 was definitely more powerful but I'd say maybe 20hp better at best. Just my two cents!
That's horrible, dealer won't warrantee it? If they won't be accountable, name and shame. Your mechanic is 100% correct as well.
The guy said, "Sorry that happened to ya". Ticks me off for sure...

Can you tell me the jetting for 5k and 8-10k ft elevations respectively? Should say on the air box.
I'd have to look myself. Remind me to check and I'd be happy to help. This sled went from 6900' to a couple thousand more without needing to change jets.
@ruder331 any luck on jetting?

Were these faster than the Indy 400?
No. They were close, but the 398cc liquid cooled 400 would edge out the 488cc because of the better cooling. In short bursts of speed, I would consider them very close. You could very easily clutch an Indy Trail to beat a standard 400 in a 500' race but the 400 will pull away eventually. The 400 only had 4-9 more horsepower (don't remember if it was 4 or 9). And, I think the stock gearing in the 400 gave it longer legs.
@@ruder331 thank you very much. I loved the 80s Indy "s. I had a friend who who had the Indy 600 anniversary edition.
Where is the battery located?
There is no battery.
Really?! My son has the same sled and it won’t start. I figured it was the battery bc it’s set for 2 years
The engine generates the electricity for the spark and lights.
@@ruder331 I guess that’s why I couldn’t find the battery 🥴 thank you very much

its not supposed to sound like that lol
Yup! That's why we have the engine apart right now, LOL. Although it still had good compression on both cylinders, once apart it was clear that the PTO got hot or something. Still not sure why. Perhaps bad oil injection port or not letting the sled warm up enough before a race. Fresh cylinders will be going on soon!
I have a 82 and she’s in pretty good shape for the year 🎉 Newfoundland Canada 🇨🇦
Same
The 440 decal on the right side is in the wrong spot but beautiful 96 still
I'm pretty sure it was that way from the factory. I've noticed inconsistency over the years from known stock sleds. I'm guessing it was a new or hungover worker in the assembly line!
What an awful sled, you better sell it to me
LOL! 😆😆😆. It was a lucky find!
I also have a 98 red rocket. If you're ever interested in selling those skis or trading for a stock set of skis. I'd also be interested in trading you a stock set of front shocks for those
I already replaced the skis... Someday I need to get the shocks rebuilt. I heard what's on there may have been factory racer sno cross set up.
@@oldsledstv2532 you still have the C&A's? Im really trying to find a set of those first generation C&A's I'll be doing a upcoming vlog series on my red rocket as I restore it to race condition and race a couple vintage snocross races this upcoming winter

Already have a buyer... just taking one last video of it.
No offense, but why would you sell that ,when it's in that nice of condition, you certainly won't find another like that ,...I know I have same sled
The short answer is I have two in awesome condition. Also, my current shop is full (12 sleds), I plan to move across the country and would like to do it with two trailers, not three. The other one I have is in the other videos I've done on the '96 and you'll see it's very clean as well.
Yes saw that ,very nice sled also, ever see a bright orange 98 with yellow (chartreuse) stickers .....I mean bright orange ?
Not the orange red like the limited 97 xcr ,have that also
I just found one today. Great channel 👍 I needed this video 😎
Thanks!
I just bought a 1990 polaris sport GT 2up, 340 fan cooled sat for "years" . I shoveled out about 10lbs of leaves, drained the tank poured some gas down the spark plug holes and jerry rigged the choke. That old tub fired right up. Its s total ripper! I love these old polaris machines
Hay DumbShits it's a kAwy motor
Cool as Fuk ++!!!!¡
This Clown has got to be from Minnesota 🤣
I bought a 1997 XC440 new and loved that little sled. The sled was very quick for a 440. Would just hook and go. My cousin could never beat it with his XLT.
That doesn't surprise me! LOL

Nice video. I hope to see you up at sumpter!
We're planning on it!
Great video just got an 1994 indy 440 gunna try rebuilding fuel pump hopefully that gets it running a bit nicer
I hope it helps, but I usually find that the fuel pump isn't a problem. It certainly could be. I do have another video talking a bit about carb cleaning, specifically needle/seats. I hope you get it running good!
lol funny you say this i already ordered a new fuel pump siting here watching your video now, i realize that, I HOOKED THE DAMN LINES UP WRONG AFTER A REBUILD!!!!! flooded my engine with oil fml now plugs keep geting caked in oil i ran it over for like 10 mins to smfh im dumb@@oldsledstv2532
Nasty that gas tank! The white is so lovely! To much stupid mixes! That's honest! Ya, hi Jake! Thiers no relation to me! I just like the ski doo! Somthing seems off, somone might have been looking for future inshurance here? I live in Canada! Deep, dangerous phycology! They look the same to me for that reason!
How did u remove airfilter ?
The back of the air filter "pops" off (I think there's a tab at either the top or bottom), push the back cover toward the fuel tank. Then, use a deep well, 10mm 1/4" drive socket to get at the two nuts on threaded posts that point toward the fuel tank from the back of the carb. Small hands help to be able to reach in there! I have kinda big hands and it's a pain! Maybe look at a parts diagram on a website so you can see what I'm describing. Good luck! Oh, take pictures of all the spring linkage hook ups to help put everything back together.
Don’t call that sled old! it’s a dinosaur u ligit keeping it running
I litterally look pesest and thx for filming me and mu btothers sled!
Hey old sledder, got the 440indy running a good long stretch today using the clicky clack fuel pump, still havent figured out the old n new pump fittings which is in and which is out.i just set the air screw at 1&1/2 out that seemed fine but had to adjust idles out more to keep a good idle.but i noticed something that you mentioned about needle n seats.since i dont have airbox on the clutch side carb was spewing much fuel out the carb throat more so than mag side.so yeah think its flooding in there,it must be sticking open, rather than not opening.when i go to order needle n seat, there both mikunis do i measure front of carb width or back for size of carbs or just give them yr.make n model of sled to get correct size seat n needle???????snooky pa.it ran a whole 15 minutes, thought i won lotto!!👌💥👍💥🤟
Inside diameter of the side of the carburetor that goes into the engine will tell you the size. Several websites allow you to just type in the year, make, model, etc and the parts that fit come up. You should run with your air box. Without it, the sled will run lean and possibly melt down.
Also, if you're still have questions about which arrow means what on the fuel pump, go down to any snowmobile dealer with your pump in hand. I'd think a mechanic would tell you for free. I think I said in the video, not every arrow means something. Sometimes an arrow is stamped but there is no opening. It just means that they use that body for many different engines. There should be two in arrows and two out arrows with fittings. Fuel in, impulse in, and fuel out to each carb.
Yes sir it does have the arrows but still hard to decipher as youve said.we dont have a snowmachine dealer local, but have boat and atv dealers im sure they would help me awnser those arrows.ok thanks for help.happy trails... .
Yes i know about the airbox lean issue it does have one.i just ran it without for time working on it too get it running!!
@@allensnook7760 Did you fix the 90 psi (bad cylinder) yet?
Не хрена не понял ... )))
I liked ur description to detail but can you explain were pulse comes in were gas comes in then how it tranfers out the two nipples for carbs.ive got a new pump and may rebuild old one just as a spare.doesnt look bad.but who knows it wasnt working.my question is this is there a way to test the pulse coming from engine to be certain theres enough suction or pulse n suction from said motor.just got a sweet 94 polaris 440 indy for 350.00 we got snow now but i got no go from the old or new pump, help!!!snooky pa.
Thanks for watching. The fuel pump is "powered" by a stream of air coming out of the crank case. There should be two arrows pointing toward the center of the fuel pump. One is for air and one is for fuel. As the crank shaft in the motor turns, a pulse of air is created. That pulse of air vibrates the diaphragm and creates suction from the fuel tank. Unless you see a tear in the diaphragm in your fuel pump, I suspect you have other problems. Fuel pumps rarely are the problem. Usually the needle/seat is the issue or a clogged pilot jet. Sometimes the main jet is clogged as well. I think I posted another video about carburetor maintenance that discusses that. Good luck!
Have you ever started this sled before? On Polaris sleds, since there is no primer, you can pull forever and it won't start if it has sat for a long time. I suggest pouring a little bit of gas into the cylinders through the spark plug holes and see if it will start.
Thanks for replying, yes i can get it to run temporarily on spraying down carb throats ,i did clean the carbs completly they seem fine.and i got it too run three minutes on a clicky clack n battery pack fuel pump.think the needle on air screw and idle screws are wrong also because when it ran it was screaming idle soon as i messed with idle screws it calmed but then stalled, couldnt get to restart then.i did compression test on the two cyl.one was 90 and other 120 could this be reason wont stay running.??would that unbalance compression affect fuel pump pulse being low or non existing?yeah i follow on pumps routing and arrows meaning.but no one shows how it works when pump is apart!!! Ie:example gas goes in here and air n suction here.causing fuel to pass thru these flaps allowing gas to go thru but not back then goes to ie:one or two or maybe three carbs.see i have the theory of how works just need someone to show me how it actually does it when pumps disasembled.also is there way to test amount of pulse suction?i was thinking maybe a balloon on pulse line.anyway thanks for ur help.give it some thought on another pump rebuild n theory of functions vidja.snooky pa.
@@allensnook7760 I really don't think your fuel pump is the problem. First of all, having 90 psi on one cylinder indicates a meltdown event/ring failure/something bad on that cylinder. There should still be plenty of pressure from both cylinders to the fuel pump even with 90 psi on one cylinder. 120 psi is a good ballpark figure for both cylinders (depending on your altitude - 120 at 1000' above sea level is pretty good). When you said you cleaned the carburetors, did you replace the needles/seats with new? The tiny little rubber stuff in a needle/seat dries and rots - cleaning it does NO good. Did you remove the pilot jets and run a wire through them? Are the main jets clear??? A bad needle/seat will allow fuel to trickle into your crankcase and also dump fuel while running. You should replace them. Set all air screws, needle height, jetting to stock settings. There should be a sticker on the airbox or in the hood to tell you where to set stuff. I suspect your partially dead cylinder is the problem. The fuel pump is very simple thing that very rarely goes bad.
@@oldsledstv2532 all jets were open and clear,no i didnt replace the needle and seat i suppose it could be flooding out because it did bog out when i gunned throttle.ill get a kit to replace them then try again, thanks for advice.ill have to check compression again since it ran some maybe numbers come back from sticky rings.otherwise looks like a rebuilds in my future.happy brapping friend!!!snooky pa.😜😝💥👍💥

That's awesome! I have a 99 440 Fuji with 4k miles but the motor has been replaced with a lower mileage one, that's how I got it anyway. I'd like to see how far I can take it. I've been running Amsoil dominator but I'm not sure if that's necessary not to mention it's really expensive right now. Being my first sled I just want to make it last.
Great sleds! You have real beauty there! Cheers from Ontario 🇨🇦
Cheers to you as well! I sold this sled last Spring, including a near mint original cover. I hate to say how much! I still have an '82. These are awesome little sleds.
The Trailfire was introduced for the 1979 model year. Which means they were produced in 1978. We introduced them at West Yellowstone in early 1978. We had a large number of pre production machines manufactured at Horicon and shipped them to West Yellowstone. We gathered a wide selection of competitive sleds as well. Our intro meeting was in the Firehole Room of the Yellowstone Lodge. From mid January to late February we brought our dealer organization in as I recall 300 at a time. First the Intro program and the next day the dealers were split. Half went to classes on the new Trailfires and the other half went on a ride and drive into the mountains on a designated trail. They were there for three days and left and another group of 300 came in. I was part of the intro and had a class on the Trailfire with Tom Wehner of Fond du Lac. We are close friends today. We had service people there to keep everything running. They were out early getting machines started and fueled. We were supposed to intro the new Liquifire too but that was the machine we skipped a year. The first Liquifires of the the new profile were intruded for the 1980 model year. Too many development problems caused the delay. That was the year JD skipped producing the one model. I was following Stan Hayes on a mountain. He led us to the top and went over the edge ! I couldn’t believe what he did but others followed but most of us said no thanks and went back the way we came. Stan beat us back by an hour. What a time we and the dealers had at the Trailfire intro meeting. Lots of adventures and stories that I don’t have time nor space to share here. Regards Bill Lee long retired Div. Mgr.
