Some thoughts on the "wild west" world of acrylic marker pens... | Adult Colouring
Disclaimer: All content on my channel is intended for adults.
Some of my thoughts on the evolution of the world of acrylic marker pens (and a visit from Mr. Colouring Chemist at the beginning :)).
After a rather strange email conversation with a rep from a company that is quite big in the acrylic marker pen world and after watching a really thoughtful and eye-opening video by the wonderful Sketches.n.Scrubs here on TH-cam (link to her video below), I thought I'd share some of my thoughts on what seems like the "wild west" world of acrylic markers pens (although... it really is kind of a "wild west" world of all discount/white-label art supplies, isn't it?).
Link to the SketchesnScrubs video:

You may disagree with me - and that's totally fine. :) You are more than welcome to share your own thoughts with me in the comments section but please keep them respectful and kind. Thanks. :)
I'll share the links to the 120 and 168 sets of GuangNa free ink acrylic brush marker pens on Amazon US but, like I mention in the video, you'll more than likely be able to find them at a cheaper price on sites like Shein or AliExpress or Temu. I won't share links to those listings, though, because they change all the time. Try searching for "GuangNa 120 free ink acrylic markers" (or substitute 168 for 120) on those sites to see what you come up with.
Link to the 120 set of GuangNa free ink acrylic brush marker pens on Amazon US (the brand is actually listed as Amamao but the box I received says GuangNa):

Thank you for watching! Keep calm and colour on! :)

    Oh my gosh! I wish I’d seen this before getting the 90 set of Arrtx acrylic markers! I always want the biggest set so that 168 set is calling my name now! I actually watched the sketches.n.scrubs video yesterday and it made me feel kinda icky about how brands are pushing their products and it made me wonder just how many people would be touting Arrtx acrylic markers if they hadn’t been sent out for “free”. Frankly, as I said earlier, I wish I’d seen your video before I went and got my Arrtx set because I’d much rather have that Guangna set. I will say though, at first glance, I prefer the Arrtx packaging over the black box of Guangna… but after you opened the box and I saw the swatch sheet and the way the trays pull out, I was like “oh yeah! Way better choice than Arrtx” especially since it’s essentially the same quality product and bigger quantity and cheaper! Thanks for sharing and enabling me to get another set of pens! Haha!😂

    Great video Connie. I appreciate all the research you do for your videos. If I could ever get settled I would love to do similar kinds of videos. If you ever want to corroborate on a video with shared supplies and mediums, paper just let me know. Especially since I’ve got US print of most books. Thank you for your time and effort and absolutely YES, artists and expert hobbyists should get paid to do reviews. Both kinda look like a bribe but I think the companies should sign a form saying a truthful unbiased review is expected. Pffft. Like that will happen.

    You and Mr. CC sound exactly like me and mine -- I lol'd. I haven't watched the entire video yet, so please forgive me if you've already noted this, but none of the companies you mentioned developed the fin-style ink feed. (The "feed" is the actual technical name for that part.) No modern company has. They lifted it straight from fountain pens. I have a c.1920 Moore fountain pen with a finned feed in it, and several other vintage pens on my desk right now, all with finned feeds. These fountain pen finned feeds ALL look *exactly* the same as the one in the "free ink" style pen you held up. So while these companies may have done some development in terms of adapting a specific feed to work with the higher viscosity of acrylic media, the technology itself is over a hundred years old, possibly over 120 years old. I did watch the Sketches.n.Scrubs video in full, and found it compelling. I can't change what a TH-camr does, but I can absolutely change the direction of my own purchases away from companies with practices I do not agree with, and I do that anyway. But her experiences, especially the one noted that took place during Black History Month . . . omfg. Just . . . NO. I've never been so grateful that I like to sit on my butt and not stand at my desk, lol. EDITED TO ADD: I looked it up, because I am fascinated by these things, and maybe you are as well. E.L. Waterman (and if you're into fountain pens, you'll recognize that last name) was the first to patent a channeled feed for a fountain pen in 1884, which was soon followed by several further refinements; the first finned (aka "comb") feed was patented in 1904 by a gent named August Eberstein. Moritz Pratt over at The Art of Scribing has a great article that goes into what pen feeds and their exact shapes do, but essentially it boils down into three things: delivering a steady flow of ink to the nib, allowing unused ink to drain back from the nib and feed back into the main ink supply, while maintaining a regulated airflow for both that uses the air pressure as a stopper that keeps thin liquid ink from gushing out at unwanted moments.

    Loved that beautiful moment with your hubby, that's so nice, Connie ❤ I'm trying desperately not to buy anymore of the Chinese colouring supplies that they're pumping out to TH-camrs for reviews and to my Instagram feed via bloody Temu and aliexpress ads, FOMO is real, but it's my 2025 resolution to stay away from 'free for review' videos, because I end up buying something that I don't need. Clearly they're stealing ideas from propriety makers, clearly they underpay and overwork their staff and I've started to be concerned lately about what ingredients are used in them chemically, I mean, what if there's something that could cause health issues? Like in the oil pastels? They'll never tell the truth. No, I think I'm done with buying it. It's better (for me) to save and buy a little of the good stuff a few times a year, like the Staedtler pigment markers you recommended to me - they're great, thanks😍

    I also think about things like this. My thoughts are that there are manufacturers that create the inks and others companies that create and manufacture the vessel/pen casing. Artxx spends much more on marketing to get there name out there. It’s like how Costco puts their Kirkland brand on items like coffee, tinfoil, etc. they don’t manufacture them. You can buy tinfoil from Reynolds’s but Kirkland will cost much less and be the same foil just dif packaging. Thanks for the info. 👍🏻

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Do you mean the Faber-Castell Pitt Pens? It depends on which paper we're talking about. :) They will bleed through thin paper or "cheaper" paper that isn't well pressed and is very "fiber-y". Your best bet is to test them first in any book you haven't used them in before. Hope that helps! :)

    I have been searching high and low for a good pen set for doing the color by number Disney books that will give me detail and won’t bled through. I saw how beautiful your backgrounds are using Zig Art pens, also those pens have a rubber tip - which is game changing from fiber tips. I have tried Tooli-Art, but the paint just flows too fast and for detail they do not work in the Coloriage mysteries books. I have just one of those books for “palette cleansing” between heavier books…. It is hard to find a good one set for these. Do you have any experience with these books?

    Oh my goodness, I loved the tour down memory lane with your sticker album. Brings back such good memories from the 80s!

    I could smell your sticker album from Calgary! I’m sure my mom still has mine tucked away somewhere :) This is such a great idea! Thanks for sharing - I’m inspired to grab a copy and do this myself!
