This was an excellent video. You are an excellent teacher -- and this was not the easiest subject to broach. But you did it well, and explained clearly. It's also a can of worms, because there is a lot more to this than just picking colours well and keeping things balanced. But it is the best place to start!!! If the colors aren't right, you can use every advanced trick in the toolbox, and it won't matter in the end, because the colors don't work. Thank you for putting so much thought into this, and diving in so kindly! Bless you :)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas! I do have some differing ideas but I loved watching this and hearing your opinions and thoughts and ideas. I think art and what looks good together can be very subjective. I LOVED the assorted colour flowers with black background. I think it works, to my eye at least 😊 love the tree page, I didn’t even see the mandala until you pointed it out. I loved the snowman page!! Red and grey and sliver was great!

So very true - there is definitely a high level of subjectivity involved! :) Glad you liked the video!

Fascinating video Connie, thank you so much. I loved hearing your thoughts in your lovely soothing voice and grateful that you shared your experience and insight with us. Also please don't be hard on your earlier colour choices; when you started colouring you hadn't learnt all you know now. 😊

Thank you, Connie, some fab advice - especially about using neutrals (greys, white and black, maybe browns?) to not overwhelm the page with colours - I often do that, and often end up with chaotic messes 😁 also, love hearing your theories on why yellow-greens are so restful, it makes a lot of sense now why I have trouble with ‘true’ greens too!

Wow, I thought I was the only one who thought like this. You have blown my mind. I use the colour cubes and still manage to muck the colour order. I can do all the shading/highlightsd no probs, but the order of colour mucks me up. So ty ty ty for this video PS I have watched colouring bliss and have all her stuff, and many others. It makes it hard to colour a picture which breaks my heart. So again thank you so much for this. ❤❤❤❤

Hi Connie! I am not a artist either but i try to use the 60-30-10 rule for coloring pages. 60% is the dominant color, 30% is the secondary color and 10% is the accent color which could be bright. You did it yourself on the page in Johanna Basford (time 32.55). You used mostly purples, than greens and a bit of orange and it looks great. When you manage it you can choose more colors. Never use just a color ones, that will not work at all. Scatter the bright or accent color in at least 3 places, so it stays cohesive. For me contrast is important to, so i need shading and highlights also. You say you are not a artist but you make a verry good video Conny, wel done!!

I am not an expert. I had color theory when I went to school for Interior Design. Over the years it faded somewhat. Getting back into my art work and coloring has been a good thing to do. It is good to brush up and renew my knowledge of color theory. It makes more sense now at age 65 than when I was 19 and 20 years old. I don't think it hurts to refresh my mind on what it looks like now and then. Thank you so much.❤

Hi, great video! I do like bright colours, especially red, but I get what you're saying. The balanced pages are much more peaceful to look at. But for me it's a bit like muted colour palettes. I love seeing them on other people's pages, but I just can't stick to them when I'm colouring myself 😅. I really love the Hanna Karlzon bird page, it's beautiful. Did you just use Pitt pens or did you go over with pencils? On the page in her other book, for me it's the white flower that takes up too much attention. I think if you would colour that in a colour similar to the other flowers, the butterfly would be fine. Ooh, and that mandala page with the trees and the mice is stunning! Enjoy your colouring ❤

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! :) I totally admit - I have no art training at all so I was guessing as to why certain pages didn't seem to "work" for me so I could have been totally off base! All the shading on the bird page (and on virtually all of my pages :)) is done exclusively with Pitt Pens and/or Staedtler Pigment brush pens. I love colouring and shading with those pens - it's so quick and easy. :)

@@colouringchemist Oh no, I don't have any artistic education either, I learned a lot from your video.
I only recently got the Staedtler pigment pens and I haven't tried them in a Hanna Karlzon book yet. I thought the spaces would be too big and the pens would streak, but now I'm definitely going to try it.

I hated chemistry too....because I thought it was boring, and I didn't understand it either.
Then we had a new teacher, and he changed everything for me! With his explanations I started to understand it, and his style of explaining was so full of joy, that even his students were able to feel this joy. And after a few months I really was one of the best students in my chemistry class 😂

I think the Star Joy Gold pencils have been a tremendous help for me in choosing colors that work together. The colorist-created set is organized into groups of pencils that are in the same palette and just go together. She took the guess work out of the process for me, and it’s one of the reasons I would choose her set over every other set I own. Also, when I started coloring and was daunted by shading/highlighting I decided to try just adding more color in one spot and less color in another. I didn’t deal with light source or anything more than to put in light and dark. And I was surprised to find that my pages looked better immediately, even though I wasn’t doing it ‘right’. It got me stated so then I could move towards the more accurate version. Lovely video, as always 🙏🏻

Ok so hi there . As a daughter of an professional artist and as a amateur artist myself . I also struggle with primary colors. My father never used them and personally I am not a fan . I have never seen so-called professional artists use them either unless they were going for abstract. My dad alone has over 300 pieces of paintings and drawings and there's no use of primary colors in them . Those colors are not natural, they are a base to work from but not used or seen in nature at all. Hope this helps you as you go on your coloring journey. Ps it's just what is pleasing to your eye. No one is the same. I also think using the primary colors looks childish. I don't like cartoon colors. I prefer natural colors. For some reason very few companies make natural looking green colors .

I believe the example with the pink flower and butterfly is wrong. It's not the pink that is the issue but the very dark green leaves next to it. If that green wouldn't be there and the butterfly just a bit brighter, you have great composition that tells the story of the butterfly being attracted to the flower. You have some very good points about colour, and your tips will make it easier for beginners to colour, but it's also a lot about how much each colour is used and where, and in relation to each other. Seeing a colour on its own or next to others makes it a different colour.

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thank you so much for your insight, Dieter. :) My math/science brain has never considered the idea that I might be telling a story with my colouring - that's given me a lot to ponder! And yes - colour balance is so, so important. I'm finding that the more colouring I do (and the more mistakes I make :)), the more I'm learning about how to better place/balance colours. I think lots of beginners are so afraid of messing up a page that they are always following tutorials or colour-alongs (which can be amazing!) but they never go "out on their own" and make the mistakes they need to make in order to learn. Maybe that's why I'm finding it so difficult to record the colour-alongs or tutorial videos that viewers are requesting - I think so much more learning could happen if I give record general technique "how-to" videos and then folks go off on their own and experiment. :)

    • @DieterPrivate

@@colouringchemist oh yes, the fear is real 😀. I watch lots of colouralongs but only to gather ideas. I also find it easier to just try something the more I do, but the fear of messing up stays.
