What's really great about this situation though, is the fact that it makes it easier to house more people in the same areas, and it also encouraged the development of housing on top of businesses, which made it easier to get local businesses near housing. Cheaper housing and more close local businesses is a win in my book! Meanwhile, in the US, it's standard to have empty patches of grass solely for looks, which won't be used the majority of the time you live there.
