I'm an artist that loves collagraph printmaking.
Collagraphy is a really versatile printing process in which a textured plate is inked up and put through a press. Different textures hold varying amounts of ink and print different tones. Anything with a low relief texture can be stuck down and used: wallpaper, leaves, fabrics, tapes and threads etc.
The collagraph plate is then varnished and can be printed intaglio or relief. This is our method of creating and printing collagraph plates intaglio.
Intaglio printing is when the image is pressed into the page, the ink fills up all the grooves in your collagraph plate. You can use quite deep grooves but be careful not to make them too thin or they will break!
Relief printing is where you take your collagraph plate to the press and the ink only fills the positive shapes in your collagraph.

Depth & Texture in Collagraphs
In this video I will show you different ways of achieving depth and texture in Collagraph prints. Textures through making collage papers for the collagraph plate and depth by mono printing on top of your print.

Use Yes Paste. It doesn't cause paper to crinkle. Dries perfectly flat and is repositionable for a bit before it sets up. I swear by it.

I love this process but I don't have access to a press. Is it possible to do this without one?
You could do some mini prints with a pasta machine? sizzix cutting machine are really good too and very affordable

Is enviromount the same as mat board?
Yes. Enviromount has gloss finish, but if you can’t find gloss finish mat board you can just apply a layer of acrylic gloss medium to it
great process! Must give it a try sometime soon. How many prints can you pull from the composition before it gets a bit worn?
Thank you. Not as many as you would from a metal etching plate but quite a few. Somewhere between 10-20
what is "washing up liquid"
In UK we call the liquid soap you wash dishes with, is US known as dishwashing soap

This was a fantastic demonstration of so many techniques! I don’t have a press so I’m thinking of how to use the printing techniques using my gelli plate. The layering from grey to black was really interesting and created a nice base for the colors you added. Excited to create some collographs and stencils. Thanks for the inspiration. 😍

What's the difference between chine colle pieces and collage pieces, please?
That’s a very good question! Chine colle is used in printmaking so it’s stuck on whilst you printing you plate under the press. Collage papers are used in painting mixed media artwork and it’s typically stuck on with a glue. Hope this helps 🤗
