Believe me, it's so much just about saving time, having a remote for the dust collection keeps you from sanding without it on because you are not going to take "all that long" so you don't bother to walk over to the switch. Loved when you opened the chuck too wide and the jaw fell out! Hubby and I are absolute beginners and have done exactly that , and had to fiddle around to get it back in properly. We bought a vintage lathe along with a bunch of accessories, but are lacking a chuck screw, or face plate, and I am trying to figure out exactly what to order to get going . I ordered a face plate, but it appears to not be machined properly, and won’t screw on. The lathe came with two 4 jaw chucks, but it seems we need something more in order to secure a piece to cut a tenon. It is rather confusing. Anyway, fun and informative video.

@@KerryCorney thank you for your reply and suggestions. It is an Atlas, one that was originally used by (I think) McDonald Douglas to make mock ups of parts. My husband would remember better, I think. This is funny/not funny, I ordered another face plate but it was marked delivered to my mailbox and was not in there! It is a locking mailbox, so I will wait till tomorrow and see if my mail carrier made a mistake. Hubby managed to get a tenon onto a piece of cherry, a log about 5” in diameter, so we are making progress. If you made a video that addresses options to secure the piece while cutting a tenon, alternate ways to create a tenon, or any way to get a larger piece than a 2x2 on the lathe if you don’t have a face plate would be helpful. Also I have several pieces of very spalted wood, discussion on whether stabilization with something like Cactus Jiuce is advised, how to proceed would be helpful. Thanks again.

I am going through that now. I got a new lathe Laguna 18/36 and when using a spindle gouge the handle was down by my belly button. So I got a 4x6 which is probably 3 1/2 x 5 1/2. The 6 " side was too tall so I used the 4 " side. That did not feel right. (sounds like the 3 bears doesn't it). I had some exercise mats that are 1" thick and used 2 of them and it feels a lot better. Now the funny part after watching your video. I measured to the mat and it was 43 1/2 inches. I am 5' 11" which is 71 inches. Checked your chart and 71 inches calls for 43 inch spindle hight. I was 1/2 inch off by pure guessing. Thanks for the info.

You taught me something today Kerry. I’ve been turning for just a couple of years now and I would say I’m still a novice. I tend to use mortises on my turnings because it always seemed easier to decorate the bottom with a few lines and a center circle for signing. I’ve used tenons before but always thought they became more work at the end of the project since you have to flip your piece around and turn the tenon off. However, I never thought about the strength and safety aspect of it. And now that you had explained that the fibers are stronger being drawn in rather than pushed out on, it made perfect sense. It truly seems like common sense so now wonder it eluded me. lol. I, like many others on here, appreciate that you are proudly trying to keep woodturning alive and well, hopefully passing on the tradition to others. You’re doing a phenomenal job man. If I ever make it to Australia one day, Id like to buy you a beer.

The 2nd option, (internal jam chuck) looks like a great option for very thin bowls/vessels, where you'd want to apply compression pressure which keeps the shape of the piece, as opposed to applying force which spreads it apart, and possibly cracking it. Thanks for sharing that one!

Great video. Another method not requiring special tools is to get handy with a grinder and sander - place a soft pad on a work bench and finish off the bottom. This often takes much less time than setting up anything on the lathe. It does, however, limit the finished bottom to what you can accomplish with hand tools. If you know ahead that this is how you will finish it, you can turn a nice decorative foot that doesn't require much to be done . Also, if you choose a footed bowl with proper dimension, often no extra work is required after the inside is completed.

I wish I could just sort of fling the tailstock onto my lathe like that. I have to fiddle around with the piece that goes under the ways and get it just right. There is an American, Canadian, or Australian made lathe in my future.

@@KerryCorney I am embarrassed to say actually. But here goes, It is a Rikon 70-3040. I beat myself up for not making a smarter purchase. It has taught me what design features and quality of construction I want in a lathe. And in spite of its flaws it has kept me going while I figure out how serious I am about wood turning. (serious). Prior to the Rikon my only experience was with a home made lathe which I cobbled together for a one off project.

@@balahmay No need to be embarrassed, mate. It seems like you already have a passion for turning, given your shyness about the lathe. So, I think you've answered your own question. Also, I don't know too many people who have built their own lathe before. 👌 Vicmarc lathes are really expensive, but I do see decent second-hand lathes advertised online all the time. I might make a video about setup and organisation of my shop. What’s your thoughts?

@@KerryCorney It’s always interesting for me to see someone else’s shop and especially the jigs and fixtures they have personally developed. If you were here I’d want to show you those kinds of things and how I dealt with the shortfalls of my lathe. So naturally I am interested in what goes on in other shops. Production turners are particularly interesting because of their need to be efficient.

Our daughter found an add I think on Facebook marketplace in 2018 for a fellow breaking down his wood shop. We got too many tools and accessories to list for $1800. Included was an Atlas lathe. It doesn’t have any fancy features like speed adjustment on the fly, but it is a fine piece of machinery. I am in the Seattle area, Washington state, USA. My point, if you have time to look around you can find great deals. Many “ Boomers” and older folks are getting rid of very high quality tools which can represent excellent values. Check with a local Estate-sale outfit , garage sales etc.
