    This handsome documentary can be seen as a belated amende honorable. The BBC hates to admit it got anything wrong. For years its official line was that the suite of technologies Baird and Captain West offered in the 1936 trial were an improvised dead end, and that the only way forward was the all-electronic one. The BBC also obscured the truth of its preferred method's American origins, and its own blind alley: wanting output to be 'direct' (live) wherever possible. This was understandable as a contrast with television's rival, film, and BBC radio was averse to 'bottled' (recorded) programmes. But prioritizing as-it-happens material ignores the expense of production. It restricts the hours of transmission and wastes creative effort- hardly any of the Alexandra Palace pioneers' work has survived, and even most early videotape was wiped for re-use, whereas Intermediate Film and the videodisk preserved everything. The casual destruction of most Silent cinema to recover chemicals from the negatives was a tragically myopic policy. It was repeated by the BBC's archiving policies: casual vandalism which continued until the early 1970s. It was a high price to pay for the superstition that if it isn't happening in real time it isn't proper broadcasting. That belief also conduced to the over-emphasis on remotes, news and current affairs within the BBC's range of programmes: the deprecation of 'mere' entertainment and popular drama, which have done far more to unite the nation and justify the Corporation's primacy among the world's public service providers.

    The BBC wanted to keep control over the emerging TV market - as it challenged the BBC monopoly and that is the main reason EMI won the 1930s contact for TV broadcasting Certainly for telecine, Bairds system was far superior to EMI

    Extremely interesting. It was my Father (name can be supplied) who machined the prototype mechanical discs for Logie Baird. I remember him saying that the precision required was a huge challenge. My Father had a set at home before the war. He made his own set for the family after the war. I have the manual for the "Televisor".

    Edith Wharton: novels, novellas, and her renowned biography, A Backword Glance was an extraordinary female writer. She had enonmous insight as she grew to know who she was as a woman, to expose the society she was brought up in with candor and sensitivity, unafraid she gained her freedom, and the deep wounds she felt which is a part of her inner life touching each word that she exposes. Madame de Treymes, Ethom Frome, Summer, Buner Sisters Old New York, The Mother's Recompense, A Backword Glance, The House of Mirth, The Reef, The Custom of the Country, and The Age of Innocence have been a part of my library since a young girl. What an array of people she met, Henry James, Theodore Roosevelt, Kenneth Clark, Andre Gide, etc. With deep appreciation for this documentary.

  • @Test_Card_Tom
    @Test_Card_Tom หลายเดือนก่อน

    Though Baird was a pioneer of television he used other peoples inventions such as the Nipkow disc to produce his own version of television. However, his mechanical system was never adopted by any broadcaster. Only the fully electronic television system was adopted. The originator of that system was the American Philo T. Farnsworth whose electronic system was later developed by RCA in the US and Marconi-EMI in the UK whose 405 line system was adopted by the BBC.

    I was snowed in one winter and the power went out. I started rummaging through the books my mom had and I found the "Age of Innocence" I started reading it and couldn't stop. A few weeks later I had a dream, and in that dream I was sitting on a bench in a city, it felt like the late afternoon. A woman came up to me and asked me if I would hold her dog while she went and did something, I didn't catch what it was, I sat and waited for a long time and then a man came up and said, " she won't be coming back, I'll take care of the dog. That's when I woke up. Years later I watched a video about this lady and I saw what she looked like for the first time. The lady in my dream looked just like Edith Wharton.

    I think it might be correct that the Loch does not depict Duddington at least not in a literal way but, it does show a loch and seems compelling to believe the painting could be that of Raeburn. Interesting, either way and I hope we don’t get too caught up in the nationality of the painter. It’s obviously a Scotch scene in a Scotch style of a Scottish subject. It’s lovely and compelling and charming and interesting and I am glad to hear about it!
