Hello there! My name is Patrick. I am an ex-engineer with an interest in physics and snooker.
These videos are mostly about the fouls that the referees have missed in current games. They are mostly push shots and double contacts for some reason: Inadequate training perhaps?
My goal is to help the referees become better at anticipating and recognising these types of fouls.
From the WPBSA rule book (2022):
Section 2,19: “A push stroke is made when the tip of the cue remains in contact with the cue-ball (a) after the cue-ball has commenced its motion; or (b) as the cue-ball contacts an object ball except, where the cue-ball and the object ball are almost touching, it shall not be deemed a push stroke if the cue-ball hits a very fine edge of the object ball.”
Section 3,11, a(ii): “Striking the cue-ball more than once during a stroke” is a foul.
Dedicated to the hard-working snooker referees.
Easy peasy, lemon squeezy 🍋

Illegal, unfouled push shot knocks Ricky Walden out of 2024 British Open snooker championship
In snooker, push shots and double contacts are not allowed. This particular push shot was performed by Thepchaiya Un-Nooh in this year's 2024 British Open snooker tournament. It resulted in Ricky Walden being eliminated from the competition as it meant Thepchaiya was able to keep his winning break going in the deciding frame. The referee seems oblivious that anything was amiss.
There is a very simple formula that all referees can use to identify push shots: Quite simply, if (A) the distance the cue travels through the white is greater than (B) the distance between the two balls then it has to be a double contact. This is because the white will always slow down when it meets the object ball and this allows the cue to catch up for a second contact.
And because the object ball went in the hole, we can also assume that the second contact is a push shot, that is cue, white and object ball all in a row, briefly touching. This is because of the timing.
Here, we can see that A is approximately 1½ times the value of B. This is clearly a push shot. The referee has obviously not been trained properly on push shots. But it is his responsibility to make sure that he is and there are plenty of resources on TH-cam for him, including my videos. Therefore, this is his fault, in my opinion. This is bad refereeing, plain and simple.

Is this the best snooker safety shot of all time, by Kyren Wilson?
มุมมอง 92K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
This must surely be a contender for best safety shot of all time. Not only does the player get the line and the weight perfect but he shows great imagination and creativity in just concocting the shot in the first place. It was performed by Kyren Wilson in the final of the inaugural 2024 Xi'an Grand Prix, which he went on to win. This video is for educational purposes only.

This guy is clueless 😂
This entire channel is actually worrying, to focus solely on push shots, almost all of which weren't push shots is embarrassing. Genuinely reporting you for defamation, because what you're doing is falsely accusing people of CHEATING. Grow up and get over yourself. You aren't helping professionally trained referees, you're only embarrassing yourself and spreading false rubbish to try and get a bit of fame. Everyone who knows snooker can see these are not push shots.
Think you need help pal, just seen 2 of your push shot videos and neither of them are pushes 😂 may I suggest Specsavers.
Never a push shot in a million years 😂
What a load of baloney, 💯% agree nothing wrong with that shot, another a hole trying to gain some attention, get a life , Patrick Ryan
I've never seen a more obvious push shot...
You have problems mate😂😂😂
Down to the referee to determine its a push shot...gary is an honest professional and im sure if he had thought he had fouled he would have called that. Bit pathetic to call him a cheat.
Another clickbait/trolling video.
Looked ok to me' he's from Newcastle like me 😊
Did you not see zang anda push shot in belfast? ben wiliams was the ref.
Not even a table tap from Trump the prick 😂
He obviously tried it but there was an element of luck that it came off.
Good placement, but not the best ever.
That is not a push shot. Your “formula” that you keep using does not work, especially if the cue ball is not struck along the center and if there is an angle on the shot
Nope, you are wrong, he played it perfectly to avoid the push shot
You're talking about the way he retracts the cue quickly after the shot? He does that to avoid the white hitting the cue as it spins back.
Daft you can't physically do a push shot and screw back! Push shots invariably involve top spin/plain ball. Plus use your own voice for narration.
A lot of people make that same mistake for some reason. You're not the only one. They seem to think that a second contact will cancel out the back-spin.. and it would if the cue was left in there for even just a fraction of a second. It would act as a stop. But Thepchaiya's second contact is a very quick jab and he quickly retracts the cue.. So this type of second contact actually increases the back-spin.. much in the same way that a basketball player increases the spin of a ball on his finger by constantly thwacking it.. hence the unnatural speed of the white which actually bounces off the side cushion and lands on the blue. If he had played that shot normally, the white would have barely reached the cushion. And I'll probably start using my own voice soon.. maybe after I get a new phone.. next week hopefully 🙂
I value the ref opinion over yours
Well, you shouldn't.. I'm an ex-engineer with an interest in physics.. What's his background? He owns a pair of white gloves 😅
@@PatrickRyan147his background is professionally trained snooker referee, yours is sitting on a computer crying about professionally trained snooker referees. Grow the heck up, not one of these are push shots.
It's not Ricky. 😮
You need VAR for these, so not reasonable to expect referees to accurately judge the distances. A time waster of a complaint 😢
You're entitled to your opinion I suppose but imo this is bad refereeing, plain and simple. A good referee should spot that double contact no bother, especially here because the distance between the two balls is roughly the width of a snooker ball yet we can clearly see that the cue goes right through the white: A>B=Push Shot. Plus the incredible action that he gets on the white is not at all consistent with a regular shot.. This is because the second contact amplifies the back-spin.. much in the same way that a basketball player increases the spin of a ball on his finger by constantly thwacking it. So, no need for VAR if the referees are properly trained and they know what to look out for.. in my opinion of course 🙂
I've also seen Ricky performing a few push shots in other games (your videos) so 'if you live by the sword then you have to expect to die by the sword' also 😊
True but.. surely it would be better if all push shots were spotted and prosecuted in the appropriate fashion by the referees.. including Ricky's. 'Two wrongs don't make a right' you know 🙂
@@PatrickRyan147 Yeah but three rights make a left 😐

I think getting the white behind the blue was mostly luck, he was just playing to put the balls at opposite ends of the table.
No Patricia, absolutely not.
💋💋💋
I think you're talking utter rubbish Mr Ryan. You say "The fact that so many other reds moved is clear evidence that he had a much fuller contact and the "cue-tip remained in contact" - I disagree with that statement. It appears to me that the object ball that was hit by the cue ball was the 2nd red below the pink (below as viewed from the angle of the video, notwithstanding that the top of the table is closest to the bottom of the video). For what you say to have any merit, it would have had to have been the 3rd red below the pink that was struck by the cue ball. The cue did not extend forwards to be within a balls diameter of the 2nd red below the pink, and therefore the cue could not have been contact with the cue ball when it struck that red. Thus, it was not a push shot. (Your whole discussion on "very fine edge of the object ball" is not relevant to this shot, and I think you have confused yourself by discussing that aspect of the push shot rule at length)
It certainly was an exceptionally brilliant shot, but the best safety of all time? I very much doubt it, as there are really so many. Who can actually judge what the best shot or best safety shot was, I am not even sure any of the commentators or ex players can judge that call.
It's gotta be up there though.
@@gazmclean1496 aye maybe, but not exactly the best. But I am no judge, and it definitely was worth seeing it, truly amazing shot.
There are many shots that have been played that are better than this, however it’s a very good shot, but the calculation, coupled with implementation was not something that would be natural to achieve and therefore it had a lot of ifs and buts, otherwise he would be much further up the ranking, respect!
This shot was well done but isn't so difficult like it seems. The cue-ball goes long rail, short, long, long, short and back-up behind blue. A quite normal 5-cushion shoe for a 3C-player. And Judd Trump had only one miss on it.
That's not the best safety shoot ever Stfu talking crap

Could have played that with a bit of 4 by 2 and no chalk
I could have played that with my knob, piece of piss
black is still on the on the table, so what gives please explain.
Black is only worth 7 points, it is mathematically impossible for the opponent to make up the difference from there if the winner missed the final shot. As there was no highest break at stake there was no need to pot the final ball. It is also possible for an opponent to concede a frame, a single game of snooker, many consist of many frames, when they view it as impossible to mathematically beat their opponent. I hope this explains.
Exactly, it's different to pool. Snooker is about points. Red is 1, yellow is 2, etc. If you finish the frame with more points than your opponent then you win the frame. He didn't need the black as he had way more points.
Nice work 😊
Thanks for the visit
I think Anthony had laser eye surgery to improve is eyesight & it went badly wrong so is eyes are much worse then before now & really struggles to see at times now very sad indeed he’s doing well to keep playing but snooker is life loves the game so much still.
Wasnt deliberate, it was a total fluke!!
😂😂😂
No, the best safety shot won him the world championship by using his brain and playing the table rather than his opponent ❤
Undoubtedly one of the best snookers I’ve ever seen
Shot of a champion
But Kyren has an unfair advantage. His double shimmy feet shuffle when he gets down to take the shot. They would all be as good if all the players did that 😶

What’s with these Chinese referees, stand back not hover over the players shoulder!
It a fantastic shot. But the shot opportunity, is a given choice, for most professionals. Kyrren has a natural angle to send brown behind bulk and cue ball back up again. He played it perfect.
