I have driven a Tesla model S and have been hooked since - incredible acceleration, great handling, tons of gadgets what's not to like with this car except the price. As any other EVs did not excite me as much I have decided to do my own EV conversion. Also, I believe that electric cars are too expensive and therefore I would like to experiment and create an EV conversion on a budget. Since electronics has been one of my hobbies for some time and I love cars this was a great opportunity to combine those two passions into one. Follow me on my journey to create my own EV conversion!
Tesla Open Inverter board ESP32 programming tutorial
I’ve successfully made a Tesla motor spin using an Open Inverter board. Now, I’m working on my own variant with some improvements.
One of the key changes is the introduction of a new ESP 32 WiFi module.
I faced some challenges getting it to work, so I decided to create this tutorial to help others who might encounter similar issues.
In my current design, I’m using an ESP32 Wroom module and integrating it directly into the PCB design. But don’t worry the programming method covered in this tutorial applies to any USB-based ESP32 board.

Awesome video, really enjoyed the detailed breakdown! I’m currently looking to buy a used Tesla SDU (front or back, from 2019 or older) for a project. I’m hoping to avoid any potential pitfalls and would love your advice on what to look out for to ensure I don’t end up with a bad motor. Any tips on what to check or any red flags to watch for would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!
Thank you so much. First I recommend going for the rear motor if you can. Try to get shafts as well as HV cables as they are expensive if you buy them separately. If you will be using Open inverter make sure you use the some form of current limiting device such as high power resistor or a heating element in series when testing for the first time. Make sure that you never open any of the contractors while the motor is running. Check the WiKi for the Open inverter SDU there is a setting that doesn't allow the contactor to trip or even better control contractors externally
I've been following your efforts. You are doing well. Keep going!
Thank you so much for your support
Man make your own

LTOs are the best there is but the price is x10 LFP/NMC at this point.
Yes unfortunately that is the case. It would be interesting to try this as a hybrid battery

I heard. that to get more power, you have to disable or remove the buck boost converter.
I am bypassing the buck boost converter anyway
@@LatutaEV that’s achieved by not connecting the new logic board to the boost converter right?
whats the max voltage DC you can give the prius inverter? I want to run it at 350 to 400 volts
Yes it would be fine except you must not connect the HV where Toyota connection is. Check my other videos I show where the connection should be made
What about if u modify tesla and replace its electric engine with internal combustion engine?
Rich rebuild has done that already 😂
Thanks for this. I am starting an EV conversion too. I have a prius inverter with the board, and i think I will be using the Zombie board too.
@@damo9436 great you can check my other videos. Also check Good enough garage channel he had done many tutorials for Zombie
Good stuff! Did you use OEM or OE board in the Toyota Inverter?
@@hakanrolsson The Toyota inverter was controlled by external VCU. That was also Damien Maguire design board that used Toyota Comms to control the inverter

Thanks for going through the process steps and discussing your plans so clearly. I was excited to see your success. I am looking forward to seeing the next steps.
Thank you so much 👍
Thank you for the video series. It makes clear this is not an easy process to hack all this stuff particularly depending on others hacks. I was a big proponent of using prius parts 10 years ago, but with the leaf's out and now old and cheap, there is no reason to anymore. The leaf drivetrain is very easy to swap into anything, I just bought an insurance total for $400 that is a running 35 miles range car.
@@murraymadness4674 Yes you right old leaf's are very cheap now probably the best option out there. For me the main goal was to learn how these things are working while doing it cheaply. With the Leaf probably better to use Zombie to control Nissan electronics via can commands. But if you want to do it in more interesting way you can put Open inverter board in the leaf inverter.
This is the thing about mining the people that are against lithium are 100% for coal I don't know if they realize where they get the coal from or not they get it from digging holes in the ground for y'all that don't know so they're going to be digging holes in the ground to harvest coal or to harvest lithium so we're going to be digging holes in the ground one way or another so if you're not for the lithium because they're digging holes in the ground then you should also try and boycott coal as well as far as child labor goes I started working at 13 years old I was very delinquent kid so they put me to work I got to keep all of my money which was the mistake of my parents behalf again I was irresponsible and the money probably would have been better putting in bank account somewhere so if the kids are earning their own way I'm good with that because it was that work ethic that has kept me preserved today if it wasn't for the decision made by the judge in my parents I would either be dead or I would be in prison forcing a child to work slave labor in a mine sifting through toxic chemicals barehanded I don't think adults would enjoy doing that and I am 100% against that thing however a 13 year old kid is more than capable at doing a lot of things the education I got on the roof was for superior to the secular education I was getting in school when I attended
The thing is that people call it Lithium ion battery but lithium is like a dressing sprinkled on a salad. The should have called it Ni/Co Mn copper battery!
I'm not in it for the emissions if you're in it for global warming climate change and sea level rise I would encourage you to study non-government sources yeah I in it for the thrill of building something I've always wanted an electric vehicle not happy with what I see being built so I've decided to build my own not completely sold on the Tesla Model I know there's other sources I'm still in the learning phase anyway peace and blessings
You know this is exactly my approach I just think that electric power is so much more superior. As you can see from my other videos I am also interested in building an electric car myself
reminds me of SSDs with mass adoption comes price reduction, but to achieve this they use cheaper components and make inferior product by design to reach price and production targets like the cheap ssds of today are inferior to mechanical hard drives, cheap EV motors could become inferior to ICE engines they replaced, not in terms of convert energy to motion but in terms power, longevity, etc if batteries continue their rapid decline in manufacturing cost we could see engines being crippled to meet the mass market
@@elduderino7767 Yes might be a good analogy to make. I am hoping that Tesla will still use quality components though 😕
Just throw 20 kWh batteries in the trunk like I did and transform this car into the ultimate money-saving machine! 🚗💸.th-cam.com/video/q3z28DAs9KM/w-d-xo.html Best car ever !
I want to use Gen 3 or gen 5 motor for a civic or mini cooper swap. Id ideally like to run 2 or 4 prius motors. how difficult of a task would this be compared to just using a tesla motor?
This is a very interesting question. I was considering myself perhaps taking two Prius gearboxes and removing mg1 while combining mg2s into one motor. In your case you can consider doing the same for front and rear. But it will not be simple I can tell you that. If you just take each gearbox and inverter as is the weight penalty would be considerable
This was very helpful! Im building one right now and this was a great concise source of info.
I am glad you found it useful. What are you planning to use the Zombie with?
Appreciate the content man good info and good editing you should have more views gotta be more nerds like me out there!

How many miles per gallon are you getting from this?

@@LatutaEV so u get 100 miles then u recharge?
@@thevibe7415 100 mpg is a mile per gallon equivalent when you recalculate Watt hours of electricity charged to the battery
@@LatutaEV okay I see.how long does it take to charge battery?
@@thevibe7415 depends on battery size and power delivered by the charger
I need to check mine, because I couldn't seem to get it to work either.
Does your board not go into run mode - led not blinking at power up?
Awesome video! Radial Flux motor : to the drum brake Axial Flux Motor : to the disc brake That's a simple analogy and very helpful to understand the concept Thanks so much for sharing this 👍👍👍
Thanks for your comment I thought that it might be a good analogy to use
Axial motor shape has some resemblance of a torq converter
Real reason why he hates EV: A specific version of *Atkinson Cycle* is extremely efficient (not Toyota's famous Atkinson Cycle). Unfortunately it is even rarer than hydrogen EV, it only exists when Rowan Atkinson is riding his old bicycle. Basically zero emission as long as he doesn't fart. 😂😁😁
Brilliant, love this comment ❤️
Yikes, how did the wrong resistor get on there? Did JLCPCB do that or was the wrong resistor value in the BOM file? Either way, it's likely there are more of those boards out there, I think... Idk what the threshold resistance would be for pull down of boot0.
I am not sure I suspect JLCPCB made a mistake while populating the board.

Maybe honda ima hybred easier to convert to ev?, honda has no liquid cooling.
I thought about that actually considering Toyota Prius or Honda crz
Although I don't particularly like Prius while CRZ is quite expensive and reliable not many failed cars around
At 4:26, I noticed that the rotors were not "true" to the stator. They wobbled. Is this an intentional component of the design? Or perhaps, a glitch in the graphics software?
I don't think this is intentional just a graphic not perfect
