    Hi! In which order should you play the four boxes? Best regards jonas

    • @COOPFORTWO
      @COOPFORTWO วันที่ผ่านมา

      Your first box should be EITHER The Thames Murders or the Baker Street Irregulars. I think the Baker Street Irregulars is the best box so I would start there. It doesn't require any experience with the other boxes even though its the most recent. Then Thames Murders would be your second box. For the third box, I'd probably play the red box, (Jack the Ripper & West end Adventures) but skip the Jack the Ripper cases (or at least leave them till laste). And then play the blue box last (Carlton House & Queens Park).

    Using the new QAU and Downstream keyer plugins, so I have to organise the docks inn tabbed groups to keep the layout useable. Your plugin is brilliant! Changed scene collection. When I changed back to the original scene collection all the docks were there but had ungrouped. No problem! Click my saved layout and everything was tidy again. This is certainly more necessary now that additional dock functionality is being added to OBS

    I'm pretty neutral when it comes to this game. I agree the papercraft body is largely for novelty but I guess that's more what I expected so I don't think I was as disappointed with it. I agree the cold case itself was enjoyable. If you just wanted to see a neat looking prop body and be able to physically interact with it, I don't think there is reason to be terribly disappointed (except for the actual coloring bug). I feel that basing a game around an autopsy is trickier than it might first sound. For one it feels like the entire autopsy should be completed, facts gathered, and then deductions made. So it doesn't really lend itself to the multiple act structure this game attempted. Along with this I also feel it's harder to have twists within the autopsy itself, because once again, it feels like it should all be done upfront. The main way I guess to get around this would be to have samples sent off for analysis and then the tests coming back and revealing something unexpected. I also feel that a simulated autopsy would always be very procedural. So I'm not sure there could be super clever insights or decisions to make with regards to the performance of the autopsy itself. It feels any clever insights/deductions would have to come after the autopsy. The facts gathered interacting with other types of clues in the case. So while I do agree this went too far into the abstract with determining weight of the attacker based on what wounds look like, it seems to me the process would always lean towards being very procedural and mechanical. Comparing wounds with chart to determine potential weapon. Comparing organ against a set of images to see if the organ was unhealthy. Comparing color of bruise to determine if injury happened before or after death etc. I think it might always feel a bit on rails. There could be decisions about test to perform for further chemical analysis but then that seems like it would not really involve the papercraft body any longer. Maybe I'm just not seeing it but I think an autopsy might be the most boring choice of medical investigation. If the patient it alive there the elements of correct diagnosis to keep them alive, the time pressure, and having to try keep invasive exploratory procedures to a minimal. If it was skeletal forensics there is the mystery of who this person was, what they looked like, even how old they were.

    • @debbielevy3539
      @debbielevy3539 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I actually like the autopsy idea in principle, and found it moderately fun in practice. The biggest issue for me is how disjointed it feels from the rest of the game - I wish the puzzles had felt more like actual analysis rather than something out of a kids' puzzle book. As I said over on the Discord, "Would be nice if this autopsy game involved an actual autopsy."

    Original comment by Debbie Levy: "I agree with pretty much all your points about the autopsy puzzles, but I'm bewildered as to how you judge them as 80% of the game - I'd have said 20% at most. The vast majority of materials at each stage consist of interviews, documents, working out the timeline, etc. Did you do all the autopsy stuff first, then go back and look at the other things? Because if so, oof, I can see why you had such a disspiriting experience." I re-uploaded this with a note in the video that the autopsy stuff was not quite as large a proportion of the experience as I initially suggested. -jesse

    • @debbielevy3539
      @debbielevy3539 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, 40% sounds like a much more reasonable estimate (though obviously it will vary depending on the group). I think this is a good review and I agree with most of your criticisms, though I felt a lot more positive about the game overall. The only other thing I took issue with was describing the autopsy as the "first" part of the game, which implies that it should be done in full before looking at the other material. I don't know if you did it that way during your playthrough as I didn't watch the whole thing, but just as a heads-up to anyone else thinking of trying the game, I don't believe that's how it's designed to be played. In my play session we spent a lot of time examining the 'cold case' material at each stage before doing the autopsy puzzles. This helped to give context to what we were doing, and it felt like the storyline was unfolding naturally alongside the autopsy, rather than coming all at once at the end.

    Enjoyed the mechanics of the game. Timer did work very well. I do wish there had a been a bit more of a system that let you follow up on threads of the case you thought you understood more directly. For the case itself, felt like the group didn't quite sync up on the wave length of the designer. Maybe we read too much into certain clues and wound up with some overly complicated theories. Even though we understood the main thrusts for the case might have been more rewarding to have locked down some more of the details. I think maybe we should have done a third session and reread everything to try and come up with a more consistent understanding. I think that would be my advise to another group playing. While you should still theorize try to not read more into a clue than there is. And if you're near the end and still feel confused consider taking a step back and rereading everything.

    • @COOPFORTWO
      @COOPFORTWO 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's almost always the case that re-reading everything would help make sense out of everything. On the other hand sometimes I feel like we make a reasonable decision about whether we think doing so is going to increase our enjoyment and if its worth the effort. Sometimes that real world stamina question is part of our decision process Ocassionally we find ourselves like we did here, where an extra session seems excessive but where we are tight for time trying to finish it. Luckily we didn't get burned here.

    Your video motivated me to try and buy this intriguing game. You said it was available through Amazon, but in Canada there is no listing for it. They have many books entitled "Missing In Hawaii or Jamaica or other exotic locations" but no murder mystery of this title. I even tried the full title as it appears on BGG with no luck. If they have a product in the U.S., they generally can offer it through the Canadian website. I'll keep checking --- maybe it's a brand new product that isn't available here yet.

    We did it with four players and most of us were at least somewhat lost, most of the time. Too many rabbit trails to explore, all at once. Some of which truly had no purpose. As the author is, in fact, an author, I have to give some leeway for the verbosity on the website. But, with so many things to explore, we missed a lot of the narrative (In fact, the assigned readers stopped reading aloud halfway through a long read and luckily, they remembered the relevant bits hidden within. But, it's not satisfying when you are stumped by something and the reader got bored. My gripes align with yours for the most part. As an ARGer from way back, I gotta say the puzzles were a mixed bag. Your intuition to roll the die was something that took us a while to GROK. It would have been nice if the numbers on the already nonstandard die would have all oriented "north" in the final position. That last one was surely not playtested by someone who doesn't think like the designer. It seemed to be an afterthought to make the game last longer.

    • @COOPFORTWO
      @COOPFORTWO 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      These kinds of games can be hit and miss even in the best circumstances. And I think it may also be true that the more players, the more likely it is that players will get bored or feel out of it, especially with a puzzle game or with lots of reading. There may be groups that are the exception but it's definitely a risk. I wonder if one solution in such cases is try to split it into multiple sessions and let people drop out..

    • @MorrisonManor
      @MorrisonManor 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@COOPFORTWO I'm very familiar with large groups getting a puzzle and attacking it, en masse, online. I have experienced the hive mind, working in unison, to come up with the solve... Everyone bringing something to the table. It's a force where puzzle designers (even with robust playtesting) were gobsmacked at how quickly their well-crafted puzzle fell. It's the call to split it into groups to focus on disparate paths that makes folks feel they weren't part of the team. That can work. But, only if there is a clear "big picture" where they can decide how much they're willing to miss. For this campaign, I'd suggest it be a single person except that (as you experienced) the intuition for a certain "It's gotta be, 'X"" methodology when so many methods are available creates a wall that causes frustration. Like you and the CW/CCW instruction. The way the last bit on this one was wedged into the experience, leveraging an earlier solve was commendable from a development perspective but, it wasn't properly fleshed-out. I do have to give the web team on this one kudos for making the path logical and realistic except for the prompt lengths and the weird extra password bit. It would have been nice if there were some early hint that the logs would be part of the actual experience and not just historical data to be evaluated. Maybe something as simple as dates made part of the memory fragments retrieved.

    I agree with Jesse. Overall, it wasn't super difficult to crack for experts, but it was fun even for seasoned sleuths. Anyhow the difficulty rating written on the box (3/5) is in line with what you get. The story is interesting and the pace given by the opening of the envelops is well designed and satisfactory. The final explanation of the facts seemed logic and well written. I really appreciated the quality of the materials, the interaction with the web site and the hints system also appears quite good. Moreover no one (and remarkably no one of the native English speakers) complained for the quality of the translation. As mentioned, some parts of the investigation are on the easy side for this type of games, making it suitable for non-experts and families (apart from the theme, though), but don't be fooled: it has also challenging stuff and you will have to do clever connections to figure out the necessary details. On the negative side, a minor things is that some of the materials (I'm trying to be vague here) could be giving away few hints without a reason. I hope that they will translate also other cases in the future (old and new).

    I have a question. You said that these games are so polished that you will be able to eliminate every suspect with hard evidence and if we find ourselves struggling to eliminate one or two people then we should go through the files again to look for clues. But the back of the booklets say that we need to "find the killer (or killers)". So if there can be multiple killers, how do we know when that's the answer instead of spending time looking for a piece of evidence that doesn't exist which leaves us with only one suspect?

    • @COOPFORTWO
      @COOPFORTWO 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well that's a fair question. If a game says killer or killers then you must assume it COULD be more than one. My comment stands though, at the end you should be CONFIDENT about who it can and can't be; if you find yourself unsure or having to take a guess, you should go back to the evidence until you are confident, or take a hint. You do not need to "guess" with these games. -jesse

    You can fight the monsters AFTER the chronicle page was turned. It is stated in the chronicle event ("until all the imps / demons are dealt with").

    In a moment of boredom I asked chatGPT to recommend some games to me and this was the only one I had definitely never heard of so I've picked it up second-hand from GeekMarket. I'm interested to see how I feel about it.

    We're a group of 40-somethings that are quite firm with "real" Board-Games. We also played a lot of the Exit- and some of the Unlock!-Games. Only two of us had tipped their toes very briefly into Pen & Paper-Roleplaying before... We bought this as some kind of gateway into the P&P-Genre and in our opinion it worked very good! Yes, the mechanics are very basic and no, there is no real (combat-)strategy other than "let the guy with the stamina-bonus do the stamina-test" and "let the gal with the wisdom-bonus do the wisdom-test", but that was absolutely okay for us! We liked the story, we liked the (very easy) puzzles and we tried our best to "roleplay" our actions. One of the big "problems" with Pen & Paper is the need for a game-master. Here the story is told through the cards and you don't need a game-master to tell you what to do and what you can't do. We enjoyed this game very much and would play a second or third game of this kind. As for cons... well... we played the german version of the game and the translation is not in line with the D&D we are used to through videogames or pop-culture. That will not concern those playing an english version, but we found it a little odd. A second con is the quality of the material, as you mentioned. Some of the tiles where extremely warped, so that it was almost impossible to place your mini correctly. As i said, we enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a gateway into roleplaying. Do you know other games that offer a Pen & Paper-like experience without the need of a game-master, aside from all the Descents, Gloomhavens and all the other Dungen-Crawlers?

      I appreciate hearing from someone who enjoyed the game! In the last few years there has been a real surge of dungeon crawler and role-playing type games that do not need a separate game master. But I'm afraid I don't have too much experience with them. However I do know where to send you, to the channel called "The Dungeon Dive" (@TheDungeonDive) (www.youtube.com/@TheDungeonDive) he covers these kinds of games and there are so many that look truly beautiful. The only thing I think you are going to have a hard time finding however, is other such games that make heavy use of puzzles/deduction. That seems to be much more rare. The genre seems to favor more random encounters/stories and roleplaying things like leveling up characters. Let me know if you discover something good! -jesse

    Hi Jesse, I was able to watch this. I agree with your theory on the interest of females in the mystery realm genre. I also think the amount of time to learn and then play an individual game also plays a role. Do males have more time to play longer board games, over and over? It seems like they may. It would be interesting to note the demographic on live escape room games. Those rooms don't have the length of narrative of mystery games, but definitely are themed! I wonder if escape room owners see much of a variance!

      It would be interesting to hear about demographics of escape room games. Though I wouldn't be at all surprised if they skewed more male then home-based similar games. My reasoning is that I think women are more likely to be turned off by the same aspects of real-life group escape rooms that makes me dislike them -- a kind of mad dash for the loudest and fastest people to dominate the experience and find solutions as quickly as possible -- rather than a slower more contemplative approach where everyone involved as time to participate.

    Mystery games should start putting warning labels on the boxes if they contain any sort of visual / folding puzzle so Jesse can avoid them. 😄

    I am sorry to spoil your enjoyment of getting rid of the ring, but I spot quite a few errors starting from 2:41:00 (the beggar in Kel): 1) This 013 Lady Luck should be discarded, not returned (this is a common mistake, and repeated at 7:05:06). 2) The food (PROVISIONS) should also be discarded, not returned (this is very minor). 3) The 384 dialogue (triggering the duplicate "A Good Deed" side quest) should never have been read. ("...if the quest "A good deed" _cannot_ be seen...".) This is the worst mistake, as this wouldn't have made this encounter a Good Deed, so the ring should still be with you (and you should not have another "A Good Deed" side quest).. Also, at 6:51:29, the Vigorina card has a brown eat symbol, so you can't just do that action on its own. And that's how it's stopping you from eating indefinitively. :)

      Appreciate the corrections! Keep 'em coming. You'd think by the 6th episode we would stop making them, but it seems very hard (at least for me!) to avoid these kinds of mistakes with this game. Mistakenly using a brown modifier as a standalone action is something i know better than to do, but it's still easy to forget! -jesse ps. I still feel good about getting rid of that damn ring.

      @@COOPFORTWO 😄Nice pun. But... I think you are right. The comparatively more straightforward nature of Forbidden Desert appeals to me more than the relatively messy play of Jungle. But the fact that Jungle is harder to solo is part of my issue. Switching out eggs for hatchlings and hatchlings for adults is a lot to solo.

    Quick spoiiler-free mini-review: Lots to love with this new series. Beautifully illustrated; very high productional quality; long playing time; serious deduction required with some dense subtle clues. Really great system for the passage of time with events. But the case was not without some problems. The main one was how easy it would be to finish without seeing an absolutely essential card -- meaning that some play groups are likely to have an unpleasant time when they get to the end and get things wrong. The other problem was the huge proportion of red herring and only tangentially important confusing details, compared to clues related to the main questions. Still, looking forward to playing more games in this series. -jesse

    55:17 problems w mass produced games is their often lack of story or immerision bcuz of it, its just play and be finished kinda, like u never remember a BK burger compared to a delicious steak at a fancy restaurant, really "missed" opportunity here, lije WHERE is the FLAVOR txt that shouldbe all over this game?? its like two school's of making games, those inspired and those not...

    also have instant death chances w the alien like a one out of six chances in a die or 2 out of six chances, and then if the character dont die the meter goew down instead, that SHOULD HELP a little w the tension part me thinx... on top of that ash does two damage instead of one or one damage if he steals on scrap first... also do damage for every ORDER cards!! alot of "timer" houserules possibilities here, just bcuz the game in itself is mediocre doesnt mean it has to STAY that way w many components to alter and rules around them to be tweaked...

    if there is a tie it makes more thematically sense to RANDOMLY deicide w a DIE ROLL which player its going after than controlling it!! would be cool as well if it was random every time how many items each could carry from game to game (w a minimum of 1 including the coolant, so one could end up w the normal four, one could end up w two and one w three or any combo especially playing (alone) w 5 characters!! would be more exciting if u only had one objective u could do at a time and maybe just look at them from the beginning and choose the first or something and then either put them in a specific order from the start unchangeable or choose the nxt every time u complete one...? wouldn't it make more SENSE as a houserule to actually put the scrap and/or at least the conceal token WHERE the alien already already are? i think either one should play w all characters for more theme or atleast have 6 objective cards (5+1) instead of 4 to make the game more interesting, atleast for me... it should not be allowed to exploit the movement rules by walking straight into an alien, or if allowed there should be like a 50/50 of instant death modified by a die, so like if u roll 1-3 on a die ithat character is Automatically KILLED , if he survives u do normal stress damage BUT makes it ALSO RANDOM where he goes so u cant ' GAME ' the Movement as u want...

A great setup with facts we were trying to make sense of right to the very end, with tons of interesting debate among us. In the end the solution wasn't completely believable but we got it mostly correct and the ride was more than worth it. Had a blast --- great stuff.
