There is a series of games called Decktective which is very similar to this idea but with two distinctions that I think improve upon The Sherlock Files
    1. You create a 3D crime scene with the cards and game box which gives you more possible clues to look at. Plus, it can be nice to actually have a scene to help with some of the spatial reasoning
    2. The cards are set in an order instead of being randomly shuffled so it eliminates the bad luck a player might have in The Sherlock Files where they are given a key piece of evidence immediately and throw it away without realising. Also, having a structure to the cards means that the writers can focus on a more narrative mystery (with some timed plot twists) instead of relying on the luck of the draw to make or break the core mystery.
Have you ever tried Decktective? I think you would enjoy it.

I do not believe I have tried Decktective yet, but I will order a box and try it! Do you have a recommendation for which box I should get?

@@COOPFORTWO I would have to recommend the first one called Bloody Red Roses simply because it's the most straight-forward plot (although easiest) of the 3 I've played. It will let you get the hang of how the writers think before the more challenging ones.
And if you like them, there are about 6 or 7 out right now. I'm currently buying my 4th box :)
I hope you enjoy it! I'd like to hear your thoughts on it after playing a game

Ack! I would NOT recommend Bloody Red Roses! I do really like Dectective series, and I even enjoyed most of Blood Red Roses, but the final reveal of how the murder happened was so ridiculous that every single person at the table got angry!
Nightmare in the Mirror was the best I played. The Gaze of the Ghost was very atmospheric, though one or two points stretched logic a bit. You Can't Cheat Death was okay but one important point later on seemed pretty unfair how you were supposed to figure it out.
But yeah I like them more than Sherlock, where you can easily throw important cards away before you have an idea of the mystery. In Decktective, you draw them in order with them becoming more important as you go on. The cards have an increasing "threshold" where there's a number and in order to play them, you have to have discarded at least that many cards. So you can play any card at the start, but then you might have to have 3-6 discarded cards in order to play the later ones. I think that's a lot better than blind guessing and penalizing you for score.
It also has a cool progressing narrative where important events happen as you progress through the deck that will change up the facts and even the crime scene itself.

I gathered the whole Sherlock Files collection and remained glad to spend time and money on them. It's a nice series of games that provided me with a lot of beautiful evenings. But as for me, they are very far from perfection. First, obviously, not all cases are good. I understand that this is not a problem exclusively for Sherlock Files, but it is in the games of this series the largest number of bad cases from all the detective board games I've passed. Especially I was furious after the cases of of "Missing Man", "defiled graves", "13 hostages", "Ghost of number 208", " the necklace "Frida", "the case where the boy came to mom and died" and also all the crimes that in the middle ages box (except the case of "beautiful lady", it is fun). I'm sorry I gave all the cases fictional names, I just don't remember what they are called in English translation, lol. The cases I have listed are not terrible, at all contrary, they are good, but either have in themselves
strange decisions, either simply terribly plain or unsuitable. Also the mechanic of the game can subport impressions from the case. The player can get caught a key evidence at the very beginning of the case, but because of lack of information, he discard it and will lose, unable to solve the crime.
(Sorry for my poor English :( )

Nice! It's definitely true that you can get unlucky and get some early important cards before you know if they are useful. If these games were cheaper it would be a little less painful when that happens.

I actually like the solitaire mechanics of this game, even when playing with multiple players, because you are allowed to delay the decision of discarding for most cards, and it does reduce the dependency on other players making the right decision.

Thanks a lot. I'm not sure if it's for me, but now I know what is it. On the list to check when price/shipping will be acceptable.

Can you rate each of the boxes? Which ones did you prefer, etc? And, more importantly, which one would be the best to start with - the best one to try first? This sounds like a great holiday present for my family but I would like to get just one to begin with to see how it goes.

I haven't played enough of them to rank the boxes but I world say start with first box, elementary entries unless another is much cheaper. There is also a box made specifically for kids.

I missed that the cards are shuffled, or are they in a order to be drawn?

Definitely shuffled. (unlike Perspectives where they are precisely ordered to balance information).

I love Sherlock have all the CDs and Bureau of Investigation, deduction is my favourite type of game, but this just looks dull. I won't be buying or playing this.
Whoever designed this should be fired
