I love how once Zoro gets over the initial shock of how early Luffy is in putting his crew together, he immediately adjusts to “my new captain is crazy and I’m here for it.” Also, since you commented on finding the colors and the sky pretty, there’s an interesting bit of historic context to that. In the late 90s when One Piece began (the anime started in 1999), most animation was drawn and colored by hand, known as “cel animation”, which tended to have crisper colors with little bits of flair and charming imperfection making some of the colors pop. These days cel animation is rare but you occasionally see it done as a deliberate throwback (the movie Redline is probably the best-known example). Then in the very early 2000s, very early in the show’s run, the industry shifted to what’s colloquially known as “digipaint” animation, and while a lot of artists have figured out how to do very cool things with this tool, during its early days a lot of anime of that era suffered from flat colors as the industry went through some growing pains. So if you notice a sudden change in the show’s coloration after a few dozen episodes, that’s why. It doesn’t look bad and the animators adapt very quickly, but the specific time in which the show began its run make the early episodes a neat little relic of that transition.
@@Nastyn1nja808 Cel is short for celluloid, the transparent material originally used when the technique was developed (though other materials became preferred later on). Drawing a character on a transparent sheet that could be put over a static background was a nice way to only have to draw the background once and to have an easy reference when drawing the next pose in an animation sequence. I'm oversimplifying but that's the gist of it. The important part is the move to digital changed how animation looked in a few ways, most noticeably in how colors tended to look.
It *is* a classic anime OP tho. Although-you might start to notice this a bit with anime, but some people consider anime OPs to be a bit spoilery. Why? Well, if you were a new watcher…could you guess who the next five people to join the crew are? lol. Also kinda telling there’s no Koby in the OP. I’m pretty used to it, myself, but I’m also someone who watches movie trailers and doesn’t pick up on “obvious edits” and such. There’s a few times when something big happens and this first OP shows up again, so the nostalgia is always there.
Yeah I love every art style of One Piece and especially the older style. They always kept up with the trends of animation and its fun to see it progress as you watch! And its also cool to see Oda evolve as an artist as you read.

The way Nami is introduced is, the biggest anime to manga difference (in the first episodes at least). The old style animation is nostalgic to me too. Reminds me of DBZ design when it comes to facial expressions. Hope you will enjoy it as much as you enjoyed the manga.
I wish they had kept the "put your life on the line" line in the the live action. It feels integral to Shanks world view: if you're going to act, follow through.
The One Piece anime is a fairly solid adaptation; the voice cast in stellar, the music is great and they more or less keep the charm of the original manga. The only real downside is how the pacing drags as they get closer to the manga and have to fill time with anime-only content of dubious quality, but you're several hundred episodes from where that gets really bad. One Piece is really one of the last anime hold outs before more shows finally started taking production breaks and doing seasons. 15:48....Shanks' bounty huh? 👀
