Flipped Kayak While Fishing for Sheephead - Learn Deep Water Re Entry!
It was a good day fishing for Sheephead in Palos Verdes. Lots of action and several fish after only a short time. After about a half hour the dreaded 'kayak flip' finally caught up to me. WARNING, know how to self rescue. This little incident will go down as a funny situation but I see way to many people need to be rescued by the coast guard or worse when this kind of thing happens.
One thing that also helped out my situation is that I was not wearing any cotton clothing. As the saying goes 'cotton kills'. Always wear quick drying materials like theses
Merino wool
Nylon
Polyester
Spandex
These materials are designed to wick moisture away from the skin and dry quickly due to their low absorbency rate.
Here are some things I like to wear when I am out on the water or hiking.

Kayak Fishing - Palos Verdes Kelp for Sheephead

A beautiful day kayak fishing at Palos Verdes. I was hoping for a few hours of calm wind, and I got it this morning. Surf was 1 ft so it made for an easy launch from the unforgiving rocky beach. The water temp was around 69 and I left on a low tide. You can see the kelp is almost to the beach. Fished with small pieces of raw shrimp on a #1 hook. I ended the morning with 5 Sheephead (kept the 2 ...

      I think that is mostly due to my setup. I am not able to get the motor as far down into the water as you might otherwise, so it makes a sloshing sound as it pulls in a little air. I think it would be much quieter if it was on a kayak with a little less free board.

    • @thekayaklaunch

      Basically you need a Johnson 350-500gph bilge pump (or any mfr). A reverse flow valve from Home Depot (this helps keep the pump primed), the dog food container (or whatever you use to hold the water) and the various hoses and connectors to connect it all up. Some use an outboard gas tank prime bulb to suck in water and get the pump primed with water before you start the pump.

    How can you tell the difference between a halibut & a flounder?

    • @thekayaklaunch
      @thekayaklaunch ปีที่แล้ว

      One way to tell the difference between a halibut and a flounder is by looking at their body shape and size. Halibut have an elongated, diamond-shaped body with pointed dorsal and anal fins, while flounder have a short and rounded body with flat or rounded tails. Halibut are also much larger than flounder generally speaking
