A PHOTO FINISH at the Run Nation Hexham 10K! Midweek fun in the evening sun! - Al Pepper Runs
Last week saw me continue my adventure up the Tyne Valley with the Run Nation Hexham Sundowner 10K, an out and back route starting just outside Hexham and heading along to the outskirts of Corbridge before turning back and finishing on the Tyne Green.
I found this one a little trickier than expected. Conditions underfoot were great but it was definitely undulating in my books! As always, it was great fun though and I had a blast!

Don’t know what you were running, but Yorkshire three peaks is not a 70km ultra. It’s a 38km loop with around 1450m elevation, hitting Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Inglesborough, with additional checkpoints at Ribblehead and The Old Hill Inn. There’s a 90km ultra called the fellsman along the similar route, but that doesn’t look like what you were doing.

@@philliprushby7714 definitely. Talking to a professional and spending even a short while on a treadmill seems a lot better than just buying online!
Tried them Brooks trainers on one of up and running try on nights, really liked them and agree they feel comfortable and well cushioned. Great benefit of up and running try on nights is you get to run 5k in the trainers so know which ones feel right before committing to buying.
@@PhilThornberry great point Phil! I tried on a pair of nice New Balances at one of their night’s too. I think Brooks tour parkruns every now and then as well.
But does your gait stay the same at 5k or 50k ? I know mine doesn't
@@sun-sea-solar great question! I’ve never gave it much thought until recently. I had one pair at a time and that was that. Thinking about things a bit more technically now though!

Can’t beat it when you need an energy boost mid-event!
As some who manages a running store and has been in the business for many years, looking at your gait I would keep you in a shoe with a mellow stability system like the brooks guide rails or maybe one with asymmetrical beveling like the new balance and saucony stability shoes. You could also do ASICS 4D or 3D guidance system. Your ankle collapses in medially too much to be in a neutral shoe. Your interior tibialis is gonna be overworking. If you run in a lot of trail shoes that’s different because when you are in the trail your foot is landing weirdly on many uneven surfaces. That’s my opinion.
@@samsnodgrass3409 hey Sam, really appreciate that mate! Thanks for taking the time to properly watch the video! Time will tell, if the neutrals don’t work then I can always go back to the tried and tested Adrenalines!
Shoes are such an individualistic thing, different people tend to prefer drastically different things, definitely hard to define right and wrong. Personally I need an actual wide toe-box and prefer a level but cushioned sole, so Altra it is.
@@jereldonovan834 very good point. I’ve had the same style shoe for years so I’m very much at the start of that personal shoe journey now!
How long do you find they last? Altras sound nice but I hear a lot of criticism about their manufacturing quality/durability (in trail shoes anyway)? Never tried them.
@@apse2645 I’ve owned a few pairs but haven’t had a problem. I have heard the same criticisms though, especially since the company got new ownership. I will say the uppers are extremely thin, if you walk through slightly wet grass your feet will be wet, but on the flipside they will also dry extremely quickly and breathe well. I’m guessing some of the durability complaints come from that thinness. Personally, I like thinness. Doing multi day hikes It’s extremely important for my shoes to dry quickly. I doubt they would hold up well as a daily driver, but they seem to be lasting me running on pavement.
@@apse2645 I thought I responded to this yesterday, must’ve hit the wrong button. I have a few pairs without major issues but have heard the same concerns, mainly since their ownership change. I use Lone Peaks for multi day hikes and Torins for road running, both are for specific uses and neither are daily wearers, I suspect I would get more quality issues if I did wear them daily. I’m guessing a lot if it comes from the very thin fabric of the uppers. I personally like that because they dry very fast and breathe well.
@@apse2645 I’m not sure to be honest! To date, I’ve definitely wore my Adrenaline’s for a lot longer than I could have though! Brooks seem to last!
Quality video ivegot the brooks ghost max.very interesting thanks again Al
@@paulsummerly8203 my pleasure Paul! It was fun considering the more ‘technical’ side of running for an afternoon!
Not really a gait analysis more of a shoe salesman tactic these quick runs on treadmills in the shop. It's well documented people run different on treadmills and especially when watched by someone . The observer effect. You will get a good idea after a few runs though if you've made the right choice. Brooks seem to be more upto date with trends these last couple of years.
@@kevinclark5086 I could have taken more time if I’d wanted for sure, I rushed them if anything! It is a funny feeling running knowing that you’re being studied mind you! It’s certainly more in depth than just buying online which I appreciated. The guys at U&R are great. For me, I’ve always been in the same support shoe but hopefully I’m a stronger runner now. Like you say, only time will tell! I’ll report back over the coming weeks and months.
