This is an instructional channel that shows you how to play the pedal steel guitar parts to various country songs.
Tips for playing pedal steel out in public for the first time.
This video offers suggestions to beginner pedal steel players who are feeling brave enough to take their talents out in public for the first time. My thoughts include where to play along some equipment suggestions and other advice to help this transition go as smoothly as possible. Best advice is you don't have to be great to start playing out!

Clinton County Motorsports !
Such a beautiful instrument. Mom always called it, “the weeping guitar”
Thank you for the tips
Cincinnati here too! Where do you play/where will you be playing in December?
Sounds really kick ass! Tough song. I had an LDG that looked just like that many years ago. My first steel.
Thank you Gilroy. A lot of good tips.
Cool -- Man do I miss Waylon Jennings. 😢
This is awesome. Also, this sounds like one of Steely Mike tutorials... Thank you so much.
U made my day
Thanks for posting
question what is the difference between a pedal steel and a lap steel, do they play the same - what are the pro's & cons
Pedal steel has pedals that raise and lower some of the strings, lap steels do not.
I really appreciate this! My dream is to start playing gigs this year!
link to the volume knob thing?
its at the end of the video.
Yes Sir I agree on Pete Drake!
Gilroy I am a 68 year old Tele player now learning pedal Steel. You talk my lingo (Thank You) and appreciate your lessons!
Where in FL?
Near Hudson, Fl
@gilroyhollistermusic9199 OK. Thanks.
I just came back to pedal steel. When I dropped off you had just done a fantastic series for beginners, and I was diving in then our son came along and I had to put it away for a few years. Well I'm back at it and I revisited both of those videos again. Working on my harmonized scales and the goal is to get out there at some point. Thank you!
thanks so much for your help...
Missed you
thank you so much! this is great
👍
This was SO helpful, thank you!!
Amazing, I wish I could play
I was really hoping for some of the very basics in terms of explanation. Such as the tuning or what are the names of the strings you are playing or what is the interval that you were playing the scale in?
So glad I found this. I am 69 trying to learn Lap Steel right now but I want a really a PSG and this is the most helpful video I have seen on PSG. I am in South Korea and music stores here do not carry them. I could order one but they have to import and it would cost just as much as the guitar in shipping and customs charges so I have to try and find one on my visits to the USA
GHM.....real good job ... especially breaking it down...string identification and correct pedal application was essential...generous thanks for sharing hope you do more similar breakdowns.
Good stuff my man
Thanks. Trying to get into it. But, it is not a common instrument where I am. Do you do your own repairs? And, is it easy to change strings?
Thanks again
So glad I found you channel... Great advice... Thank you...
John Hughey was the absolute best. HE played on Vinces recirding session..
Great vidéo,great channel ,very helpful to me.Thank you
You had mentioned in one of your videos that you used one of the boss katana amps and was wondering what were your settings and if you used any other pedals with it. Im 75 and have been playing the guitar but this has always been my dream instrument. Any help is greatly appreciated and don't stop putting out these types of videos. Cheers for now and take care
Really nice.
Great teaching! Thanks for such good advice and insight!
Using 3&5 and 5&6 will work.Because your A pedal pulls your 5 and B pulls your 3&6.
I’ve been playing for a couple years and I ran across a Jeff Newman teaching video that has helped me tremendously. It’s here on TH-cam. It was a DVD series w/a book so I don’t have the book,BUT he shows you everything.
One thing that makes it physically easier than learning guitar is you get no finger pain from fretting notes.
Bit that pedal steel sounds so sweet. Nothing like it.
Thanks. Having troubles playing my guitar due to arthritis in my hands. Thinking of doing pedal steel. He’ll been trying to imitate steel in my playing for years. That was a great presentation thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.
Aloha Gilroy! I know some have keerected you or were somewhat critical of you but the bottom line is you worked your "okole" (Hawaiian ha ha) off and I for one can give a rats okole for any errors or omissions because you volunteer your time to help us novices and newbies! And I thank you on behalf of "us guys" for your service to the beginning students of the steel community. And hey, even the best of tutors err given the pedals, knee levers, frets and all the slippin and slidin, talking and teachin, and alternate ways to play a song. This is not a simple, easy instrument. You are a mo'fo in my book! Thanks loads bruddah Gilroy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Johnny Kealoha 🤠💥🌴🌴🌴⛲🎠
Great job explaining what you are doing. Thanks .
This is great! Scales are it.
Great! You make this look doable for a beginner. That's what we need to keep from becoming perplexed. I like to live by the saying," I'll never be any worse than I am today as long as I keep trying"
nice vid!
This isn't for complete beginners...it's for people who've already learned what the pedals are for, since you tell us absolutely nothing about them. I'd love to learn to play, but, between the price (I'm poor) and the complexity, I'll stick with my keyboards...I already have those, and synths can get close enough to the sound of the steel guitar.

Can a person who has never played the guitar learn this instrument?
Yes, previous experience playing a 6 string guitar would only be helpful from a music theory aspect.
Awesome vid btw...I'm sure Hwy 40 Blues will take awhile. You explained your approach extremely well. I'd love to hear you let loose!
