Fantastic, thank you very much! I'd love to see you do some Marty Stuart songs like "Red Red Wine And Cheating Songs", "Sundown in Nashville" or "Casino". Great pedal steel solos in there and I just can't figure them out alone. Seems like you'd be the right guy for it. :)
I certainly can't play worth a bowl of frijoles but was able to capture 90+ % of your cool country sounding fills by noticing the fret position, A B pedal mashed and if the lick still doesn't sound right play around with E lowers etc. SOLID lesson, now I'm fixin ta try to plug em in other C/W songs! Hawwwwwwwwwwww! Johnny
Thanks for all of your instructional VIDEOS. I love them all. I wish you would sell a TABLUTURE BOOK to go along with the videos on you tube . . . . If you descide to make and sell tabs for these and/or other video lessons on E9 pedal steel, them please let me know so that I can purchase them. Jerry (AKA, Rockn50s)
Gilroy Thanks for all the great stuff i took what you said putting bow wax on my fingers but the picks keep coming off any more ideas when i started on the steel never had this problem
I really enjoy your videos. They are always helpful, especially for beginners. Though I have lots of instructional books (and a few DVDs), I noticed that most do not talk about backing up a singer. Your videos on this subject is a godsend. I hope you will keep doing these types of videos since they definitely fill a gap.
Real good lesson Gilroy! Congrats to your little helper...LOL! I notice when the video first came on it was mono and then you started to give us the lesson it was in stereo through the headphones. The tracks are in mono going through the headphones too. Just letting you know...
Gilroy, I've played guitar for years & now would Luv to learn Pedal Steel. I'm aware od various configurations of it. Any suggestions what rig I might start with for a beginner? Thanks. Dan
Thanks! Nice to meet you Saturday. Let me know if you are having trouble with one of the songs... or whatever. Maybe I can post something to help. I liked the way you got through the "Working On My Next Broken Heart" lead break. You simplified it just enough to make it sound fine.
I felt the same way and still have my work cut out for me but all I've been doing is practicing those harmonized scales up and down the neck on the various string grippings. While practicing them I found melodies like this Land is Your Land, Take me out to the Ball Game and Lean on Me. At this point I play along to a song, I make sure I know where the chords changes are and then I use the scales to travel to the various chord positions on the pedal steel neck. Or if I'm on D at the 10th fret I work on sliding to the D at the fifth fret and use bar and pedal technique to make it sound good.
Playing the pedal steel is difficult, it's ok to feel frustrated. Start with a few simple items, like scales that use just 2 strings and simple pedal/knee lever moves. Scales are boring... so quickly start playing melodies or backup fills to songs so you stay motivated. Then work your way up from there.
Ha, based on your handle you must be up near Buck's turf in Bakersfield. Great flashback for me rollin down 99 Highway and breakfast at the Bakersfield Inn. Jus sayin.
Thanks Gilroy. Vids like this are SO useful, especially with backing tracks. Love your site and your clean approach to the steel.
You have a way of explaining that I can understand. It's really that simple.
Yep. You are setting a new standard. Well done. Thanks for doing these.

Thanks for confirming that. I’m trying to fix it.
@@gilroyhollister4155 Thank you Gilroy! Great job you are doing for us all. Take care now!
Hey Gilroy I liked the lesson. Is it possible if you could do the steel solo in Remember When? It is one of my favorites
Do You do lessons? I live an hour and a half away from gilroy/hollister and am looking for a pedal steel instructor.

Ok, that's it. Gotta get one now. I'd like just three pedals along with the knee levers.
any recommendations?
Can you do dire wolf by the grateful dead?
I swear you did this one before
I did the intro and 1st verse but not all the way through using scales as fills.
About as good as it gets.....too bad I can't get it.....I got a long way to go....
