1938 Record Hand Plane Restoration
It was time to restore my faithful record No. 5 Jack Plane. I have had this tool for about 6 years and had been damaged by heavy rain some weeks ago. I originally picked this up at a flea market for $20 and is by far the best plane I own.

Time to restore my old hatchet, I have had this one lying around for a while and it was time to make it functional again. I couldn't remove all of the pitting as the steel was quite thin around the middle. Overall the hatchet feels and cuts significantly better than before. Making a HUGE wooden ladder DIY

This is a great way to build a cheap comfortable ladder that can reach high areas. If you can buy the lenghts longer you can skip the lap jointing part, but it is a great way of extending a piece of timber. Thank you for watching and if you have any questions please let me know. Curved Handwoven Rattan Chair Restoration

Excellent restoration! Looks and works fantastic! Tool tip: never store hand planes on its base. Lay it on its side.
Thank you JT! It actually functions better without the layers of dust 😂 that’s a good one, will do! 👍🙂
Awesome thank you Manuel, I’m glad you like the blue it was quite glossier than I had imagined. She is ready for another 70 years. See you next time friend. It’s freezing over here I hope Stella is fairing better in the sun, give her a big pet for me 👍😺🙂👍
Great work. What is your proper website?
Hey mate, thank you very much appreciated. I am only taking on selected projects due to an injury. I had to make the website private.
Brilliant! What a beautiful hand tool.
Thanks Mags! They are indeed a work of art. Colour makes a huge difference too! 👍😺
Just got home after a long night shift and saw the notification, got happy instantly 🫡
Awesome 😺 I hope Hans clawing for his bowl was enjoyable 😂 thank you as always andersoll
@@ejwoodhouserestorations2796 no doubt, love seeing Hans completely devouring his meal 😅
Nice job there. Is that a new sander ?
Hey Don! Thanks buddy. Sort of 🤣 it’s a great tool though. Very good for large surfaces. Pretty cheap as well I haven’t had any complaints. Do they have Ryobi in the states? Id recommend it 🤓
Beautiful restoration, I agree with the owner that it was the right call to keep that gorgeous carved seat that replaced the original cane. The finished product was well worth the work it took to get there! Also Hans is such a gorgeous kitty, I adore is little ear fluffs. While I am sure he’s already gotten a bit of an ego please let him know that we think he’s just handsome here. With best wishes from me and my two kitties!
Thank you Kathleen. I do apologise for the delay in response. Haha yes I do have to keep his ego in check, he likes checking his ear fluff in the mirror 🤣 Will do 👍 give a big pet from me to both of your kitties. Best wishes from me and Hans 😺🙂
The movement can be freed up using grandfather clock oil. It will get the movement moving again and play its song like new. I use the oil all the time in old music boxes I buy for my collection that are either frozen or play very slowly.
Wow that’s fantastic, wish I would have known about this before. Thank you Kent, I will order some now.
the hard breathing is a bit creepy
🤣 I do apologise, I’ve gotten better at my breathing technique 😅
Stella is amazing, I don’t think Hans could catch a lizard. Yes they are quite amazing hunters, a pleasure to watch their amazing adaptations. I apologise for the delay in videos, I’m back in the swing of things and doing much better. I hope all is well with you and Stella also and will catch you on the next one buddy 👍😺
Hans is such a beautiful cat. I hope he behaves for his owner when they brush that long fur >___> unlike my Tyche who attacks me when I try to brush her...and she only has mid-length fur! Not quite fully long fur, (except ruff & tail) but long enough to get knots.
Thank you Katzztar, Hans does work hard to maintain his hair 🤣 he is easy to brush all except the forbidden tail section. Try and brush her when she is sleeping, or basking in the sun. Comb a small area in short sessions. I found this to be a good strategy 👍😺
@@ejwoodhouserestorations2796 The only way Tyche will let me comb her is when she is in a super-lovey mood and I ...HAVE TO STAND AND HOLD HER XD only then she lets me comb her without complaint. XD Of course I try to sneak in short comb sessions when she lays down on my desk. I can get away in short sessions for spots if I use my fingers and nails as comb. I've had around 9 cats over 40 years and none of them gave me this much trouble over getting brushed... but then they all were short-hairs. :I
A Hans video was all I needed today 😭 thanks E J Woodhouse Restorations
I hope you are okay! More dedicated Hans episodes coming up, thank you as always andersoll. 👍😺
@@ejwoodhouserestorations2796 I'm doing okay, thank you 🫶 looking forward for more amazing content 😁
Never have i seen someone use a plane to remove paint not a good way to treat furniture. One coat of finish, no pre sanding at all now or 3rd coat He would not work on my stuff 😮
Nice restoration. Your cat has crazy cool whiskers and eyebrows!
Thank you Shelby! I will pass it onto Hans. His ego will be through the roof 🤣👍😺
I love the wood grain look! Beautiful work.
Thank you Cynthia! I apologise for the delay. 👍🙂
Thank you so much for this. I have my mother’s which is about twice that size with multiple little drawers. She got it in Japan, where I was born, at my first Christmas so I know exactly how old it is. 😁 Most of it is in great condition but one top flip up door has some damage. It’s black and red. I’m going to check through the comments but would like an ingredients list if possible of the paste and lacquer you used.
Hey Dawn, I am very sorry for the delay in response. Sometimes one or two comments slip past my notifications. Do you have an email? I can email you with the steps I took and all of the products I used.
Go you Aussie show the world how good you are
Cheers mate! My apologies about the delay. 👍🦘🇦🇺
I'm sure you'll learn how to make it if you'll read woodprix instructions from cover to cover :)
I am undertaking a similar reatoration including wiring in new led lights (mine has a moving rickshaw and two lights inside), which isnt a problem, but i do have a couple questions about your thoughts on painting: For the plain black areas i intend to follow your lead. Some filler along marred edges, a light sanding, a spray paint acrylic paint/primer and possibly some bottled gloss acrylic over that to even up.... But the top of mine has a gold painted border that is damaged. I was thinking i could just tape off, lightly scuff with fine grit, and put a good opaque enamel or acrylic paint over that. To seal it all, im not sure if i should put a layer of shellac first so i can lightly scuff the whole thing before using a spray on clear acrylic topcoat or just go straight with the acrylic topcoat (im worried that without scuffing, the waterbased acrylic coat might not stick well to whatever the original finisb is. Lacquer?). Your thoughts on that would be really appreciated. Also, mine has pleated pink felt inside that's mostly intact but theres a small stain or two. What would you recommend that might lift the stain without damaging or altering the fabric color? Soft toothbrush with maybe like an oxy-compound for colors or something? Just warm water? (On felt? Feel like it needs to be some sort of dry cleaning agent). That being asked, beautiful job man. Please write back!
Hey mate I really do apologise for the delay in response. Occasionally one or two comments slip by my notifications. Do you have an email? I can email you with everything I did and the products I used.

Thank you Manuel! As always much appreciated. I will give Hans a big pat for you. Give Stella a good old belly rub for me. Can’t beat tuna, Stella is a lucky cat. Have a wonderful week and I will see you on the next one buddy 👍🙂😺
That is beautiful! And I am so pleased you showed me what the notch is used for- I had no idea! Nice to see your lovely cat as well.
Not a problem Mags. It’s always disappointing when a restoration doesn’t include the fictional aspect. I believe you can use the top of the cutting edge for prying as well 👍😎
Lovely result!
Thank you Meg! 🐝🙂
Hey nice job !
Cheers Don buddy. I hope things are going well over your side.
Nice work! I loved watching you hack that log, lol
Thank you RR. Nothing like taking a bit of anger out on a log. The wood is paulownia also 👍🙂
Your kitty waited so patiently for its food! Make a fuss over it for me. Wow, I’m the first comment! The finished piece is absolutely stunning. I’m glad you kept the original handle, despite the extra work you made for yourself.
Haha trust me Hans was just acting for the camera. He doesn’t like to wait for food 🤣. What’s your cat’s favourite food? Good hardwood handles are always worth saving, plus they are already shaped 😎 Thank you Shirley! 😺
@ejwoodhouserestoration2796 my cat Toby lived with my mom (I was definitely his human, though) and I never saw him reject any food. He passed away in my car on the way to his final vet appointment. I miss having to walk past the rest of mom’s cats to say hello to him first.
@@shirleyannconfer9651 I know exactly what you mean. Animals seem to choose who they like the most and remain loyal to the end. I hope he lived a happy long life. He sounded like a great feline pal.
@ejwoodhouserestorations2796 Toby was 22 1/2 years old when he passed. When mom tried to apologize for his dying in my car, I told her that I was honored, and that he had left on his own terms. She had raised him from being a bottle baby, and we both found it amusing that I was his human instead of her.
👍❤️😺
👍🙂🐝😺
Patent that toy - you're on a winner there! Love it 😄
I’m on it! I just need a name 🤔
The marking you were not able to read says "Thonet Austria"
Very interesting! Thank you for letting me know. 👍🙂
This was beautiful… I love how you used the basic tools and gave it an incredible finish. Loads of appreciation from fellow Australian
Cheers mate, very much appreciated. My arms suffered for it but it’s nice to have a perfectly level top. I apologise about the delay in replying 👍🙂
how many coats of varnish/diluter? what did you use to dilute?
I always use turpentine with oil, you can use water with water based varnish. Put on around 3 to 6 thinned coat’s depending on the porosity of the wood.
Great careful work
Thank you Richard 👍🙂
Thonet must be the same colour over all!! Sorry! It is an original and must be one dark colour and visible imprint on the sit. The two colour is specific for Art Deco, a late periode of time!
I had no idea, very interesting thank you for letting me know! 👍🙂
@@ejwoodhouserestorations2796 With pleasure! Thonet is considered the father of all chairs
A simple piece, but beautiful wood and restoration!

Thank you for this…just buried my Mom and this was my treasure chest growing up and now needs repair, what a gift you shared as it needs similar repairs. 💔
I’m very sorry to hear that Csmith. It’s always nice to have an item that has a connection to someone special in your life who has passed on. Please let me know if you need any tips and I hope you are feeling better very soon 🙂👍
I like that metric tape measure too. I have one although I have not converted my shop to metric just yet. But I got used to using metric at my last job.
Great job
Thank you Anusara. I’m sorry about the delay in response. 👍😎
Looks good and very sturdy. Has the cat raced up it yet?
Cheers mags! It is surprisingly sturdy, not great on the spine though. Hans needs to work on his stomach crunches before he tackles the ladder 😆 even then I’m not sure he’ll make it.
Nice job ! Years ago my dad had a 24 or 28 foot (extended length) wood extension ladder. Extremely heavy. Your place looks nice.
Cheers Don! Wow that’s crazy, I can’t imagine that being easy to haul around. Do you still have it? Must be handy when you need it. My landscaping skills are bark and timber boarders 😂👍
@@ejwoodhouserestorations2796 No I have my own aluminum ladder now which is heavy enough.
That’s a fantastic idea 👍 the ground can get quite soft after rain. Consider it done 🙂 happy new year my friend, and of course Stella! 👍😺
NIce ladder! How much weight do you think it could hold??
Cheers RR! It easily took my weight at 75kgs. I'd say a safe estimate would be 100kgs.
I got my late mothers from my dad when he served on Christmas Island 1957 unfortunately the lid got all blistered in a house fire I would love to try and get it restored precious memories of them.
